PlayStation Plus subscribers at the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers could be set to lose upward of 22 PS4 and PS5 games in September. For adding games to the middle and most expensive tier of PlayStation Plus, developers and publishers typically work out either one-year contracts with Sony or two-year contracts with Sony. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but generally speaking this a pretty consistent pattern. As a result, it makes predicting what games are going to leave PlayStation Plus any given month possible. To this end, back in July we relayed word that PlayStation Plus was probably going to lose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in August, and then this month it happened. Suffice to say, what PlayStation Plus free games are leaving next month can’t be predicted with 100% accuracy, but it is also a far cry from throwing darts in the dark.

All of that said, here are the games that were added to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium in September 2024, and thus their contracts could expire next month: Far Cry 5, The Plucky Squire, Under the Waves, Night in the Woods, Pistol Whip, Chernobylite, Space Engineers, Ben 10, Road 96, Wild Card Football, Secret Agent Clank, Doom I + Doom II Enhanced, SkyGunner, and Mister Mosquito.

Meanwhile, here are the games added to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium in September 2023, and thus could leave next month after their two-year contracts run out: This War of Mine, Contra: Rogue Corps, Odin Sphere, Call of the Sea, West of Dead, Tails Noir, Dragon’s Crown, and Paw Patrol: Adventure City Calls.

There is no guarantee any of these PlayStation Plus games will depart, but there’s a good chance at least some of them, if not most of them, will. There aren’t any massive departures in this list, but Far Cry 5 is a noteworthy AAA game. Meanwhile, there are some good indies such as Night in the Woods, The Plucky Squire (which we particularly enjoyed when it released last year), and Pistol Whip.

What hardcore PlayStation fans will hope is not leaving is Ratchet and Clank spin-off, Secret Agent Clank, a great PSP exclusive. The idea that a PlayStation game would leave PlayStation Plus sounds implausible, but it does happen. Until we get official word though, remember to take everything above with a grain of salt. There is historical context backing up this speculation, but it is still speculation nonetheless.

H/T, Reddit.

Uncharted is, without question, one of the biggest PlayStation franchises ever. While it has more or less been dormant for the better part of the past decade, during the PS3 era, Uncharted became PlayStation’s flagship series and helped make developer Naughty Dog one of the most well-known studios in the world. It went on to receive new games on the PS Vita, PS4, and was eventually adapted for the big screen with none other than Tom Holland in the role of protagonist Nathan Drake.

In total, there are currently eight Uncharted games that have appeared across a multitude of platforms since the franchise kicked off in 2007. Ahead of the inevitable Uncharted 5, here’s every current installment in the Uncharted series from worst to best.

8. Uncharted: Fortune Hunter

When I said we’re ranking every Uncharted game, I really meant every Uncharted game. Uncharted: Fortune Hunter is a free-to-play mobile title that launched in proximity to Uncharted 4. Rather than focus on the fast-paced action found in the main Uncharted series, Fortune Hunter was all about solving puzzles. And while it takes the final spot in this Uncharted ranking, the simple puzzle gameplay was actually pretty good.

Unfortunately, Uncharted: Fortune Hunter has since been delisted, meaning that it can’t be downloaded and played on mobile platforms any longer.

7. Uncharted: Fight for Fortune

Uncharted: Fight for Fortune is definitely the weirdest Uncharted game. Released in 2012, Fight for Fortune is a digital card game that features famous heroes and villains from the mainline series as cards that you can collect and do battle with. It was also exclusively available for PlayStation Vita, which explains why you may have never heard of it.

Despite being a truly bizarre idea, Fight for Fortune featured some pretty engaging gameplay. Sadly, being gridlocked to Vita kept it from ever finding much of an audience, which led to support coming to an end rather quickly.

6. Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Here’s where we get into the real Uncharted games. Golden Abyss was the first Uncharted game developed for Vita and was the platform’s biggest launch title. Serving as a prequel to the first Uncharted, Golden Abyss follows Nathan Drake on one of his earliest adventures alongside some new companions not seen in other entries.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is actually an extremely impressive game and greatly adapted the experience from the PS3 titles to a handheld device. What keeps it from ranking higher is that much of Golden Abyss feels like a retread of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, especially in its look. This, combined with some awkward gameplay mechanics and controls that were tied to the Vita as a system, keeps it firmly entrenched beneath the home console games.

5. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

The game that started it all, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune does a lot of heavy lifting. Not only does it establish Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan, and Elena Fisher as the main characters within the series, but it created the framework and tone for the series that would later be built off of the ideas seen in Uncharted 1.

Drake’s Fortune isn’t a bad game by any means and is still the Uncharted entry that everyone should begin with. Still, it’s hard to rank it higher in this list given that just about everything that is found here was later improved upon in one way or another.

4. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

The one Uncharted game to not feature Nathan Drake in a major role, The Lost Legacy proves very much capable without him. Centered around side characters Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, The Lost Legacy is more or less a much shorter version of Uncharted 4, as it originally began as DLC for the PS4 game.

Despite being a smaller-scale Uncharted title, Naughty Dog got quite experimental with The Lost Legacy, which was much to the game’s benefit. Its vast, open areas and optional side content were unique and helped evolve Naughty Dog’s open design concepts which were eventually expanded upon in The Last of Us Part II. In spite of its positives, though, The Lost Legacy fails to have a major and memorable action sequence that many other Uncharted games are known for.

3. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

uncharted-1269290.jpg

Uncharted 3 really tries to prove that bigger is better. Its setpieces are more bombastic and over-the-top than ever, with Drake finding himself dangling out of cargo planes and attempting to escape capsized cruise ships. Beyond this, it leans further into the mystical elements of the series more than before, making it one of the memorable on more fronts than one.

What’s most impressive about Uncharted 3 is that it intertwines these moments with ones that are more heartfelt than ever before. Although its pacing is off at times, especially in the final hours, Uncharted 3 is without question one of the high points of the series.

2. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Uncharted 4 really should be the best game in the series, but it has just a bit too much holding it back. From a pure gameplay perspective, this is Naughty Dog at its best. New features like the grappling hook work perfectly in tandem with the game’s expanded playgrounds, which let you take on combat situations in ways that previous games couldn’t allow for.

The only major downside to Uncharted 4 is that its runtime is a bit more bloated than other games and can definitely be felt, especially on repeat playthroughs. Additionally, as great as Sam Drake is as a new character, the concept of Nathan Drake having a secret brother that he never once talked about in past games is something that still doesn’t make sense. Even with these caveats, Uncharted 4 packs more of an emotional punch than any other game and is an excellent send-off for Nate.

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2 is undoubtedly the best game in the Uncharted franchise. While future entries would refine the gameplay mechanics and improve the visuals, Among Thieves is the best-paced Uncharted entry of the bunch and never lets up throughout its 12-hour runtime. It’s the best mix of gameplay and story not only in the Uncharted saga, but in video games as a whole.

Without Uncharted 2, Uncharted as a whole would never have become the iconic pillar of PlayStation that we know it as. Its importance to the action-adventure genre cannot be understated and it still holds up phenomenally to this day despite being almost 20 years old.

It looks like Sony has found its next PlayStation game to adapt for the big screen. A new rumor, courtesy of scooper Daniel Richtman, suggests The Last Guardian is being eyed for a film adaptation by Sony Pictures. The rumor was posted by Richtman on his Patreon, but unfortunately, no further details were made available as to any potential directors or writers. The Last Guardian was first released for PlayStation 4 back in 2016, with a VR experience being announced the following year by Sony. The video game hails from Japan Studio and GenDesign and is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The Last Guardian takes place in a strange and mystical land and follows a young boy who discovers a mysterious creature with which he forms a deep, unbreakable bond. As the two form an unlikely companionship, they must rely on each other to escape towering, treacherous ruins filled with unknown dangers. The video game is described as a touching, emotional story of friendship and trust. It has a Metascore of 82 and received a user score of 7.8 through Metacritic. The game was in development for over eight years, and despite having some mechanical issues, it’s been hailed as fully developed and full of emotion.

The Last Guardian is the latest PlayStation game to be rumored for a big screen adaptation. Another huge PlayStation game being eyed for a feature film is Horizon Zero Dawn. That project was previously in development as a television series at Netflix. However, that is no longer the case, as Sony has a movie in early development. Other games getting the big screen treatment include Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Gravity Rush, Helldivers, Jak and Daxter, and Resident Evil. The latter, of course, is in pre-production now from writer and director Zach Cregger with production expected to kickoff soon.

The Last Guardian video game has earned a few awards since it was released, including the BAFTA Games Award Audio Achievement in 2017. Other awards the game won or was nominated for include, but are not limited to, the Best Original Property and Artistic Achievement at 2017’s BAFTA Games, Best Video Game at 2017’s Empire Awards UK, and Character Design and Art Direction, Fantasy at 2017’s NAVGTR Awards. In 2018, the video game received a vinyl pressing of its soundtrack, featuring performances by the London Symphony Orchestra, the Trinity Boys Choir, and London Voices on a 2-disc vinyl LP.

With little details provided on the rumored film, it would appear the film adaptation of The Last Guardian is currently still in the early stages. This also is not the first time an adaptation of The Last Guardian has been rumored, as speculation has been circulating since 2020, with no confirmation yet to come from Sony Entertainment or PlayStation. Until it is officially confirmed, this should be treated as a rumor, which will hopefully be confirmed one way or another in the coming weeks or months.

The Last Guardian is currently included in the PlayStation Plus membership. Those without the premium membership can purchase the game for just $19.99 now through the PlayStation Store.

There are a trio of PS5 games that normally cost $60 on the PlayStation Store currently on sale for just $6 thanks to massive 90 percent discounts. In addition to this, there are a large number of other PS5 and PS4 games as cheap as a couple bucks on the PlayStation Store.

There are plenty of great deals to be had, but some of the biggest and most exciting) discounts belong to Back 4 Blood, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and Super Mega Baseball 4 Ballpark Edition. The first two of these deals come courtesy of WB Games and EA, respectively. And both of these new PSN deals are set to be available until August 19. The third and latter of these PlayStation Store deals also comes the way of EA, however, this deal is only available until August 28.

Other Noteworthy Games Currently $5.99 or Cheaper on the PlayStation Store

Between PS5 and PS4, there is a collection of notable games for PlayStation fans to grab dirt cheap. For example, at the $3.99 (or cheaper) price point there are the following games: Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux, The Escapists 2, Far Cry 4, Tomb Raider, and Zombi.

Meanwhile, the following games are $4.99 for a limited time: Outriders, Sleeping Dogs, Batman: Return to Arkham, Injustice 2, Battlefield 2042, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, Dead Island, Battlefield 4, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Star Wars Battlefront, Crime Boss: Rockay City, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Batman: Arkham VR, Call of Cthulhu, Shantae, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Watch Dogs 2, Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Tom Clancy’s The Division, Child of Light, Unravel Two, Burnout Paradise Remastered, Mortal Kombat 11, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, LEGO Worlds, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, Resident Evil Revelations, Darkwood, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Dues Ex Mankind Divided, and LEGO Harry Potter Collection.

At the $5.99 price point, in addition to the games above, there are the following deals: LEGO The Incredibles, LEGO DC Super-Villains, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Left Alive, Battlefield 1 Revolution, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, Hunting Simulator 2, Star Wars: Squadrons, Far Cry 3, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, Bulletstorm, Need for Speed Rivals, Steep, Mass Effect Andromeda, Watch Dogs, Need for Speed (2014), Alien Isolation, Valkyria Chronicles 4, South Park: The Stick of Truth, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Yooka-Laylee, Pac Man World Re-Pac, Bramble: The Mountain King, Shadow Man Remastered, Borderlands 3, A Way Out, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.

Lowest Prices Ever

This trio of games has never been cheaper than $5.99 on the PlayStation Store. And the same applies to many of the other games listed above. Mass Effect Legendary Edition features all three Mass Effect games, so RPG fans are getting some of the best RPGs of all time for essentially $2 a pop – and there’s no better time to play (or replay) the series while excitement for Mass Effect 5 is building.

Meanwhile, Back 4 Blood is a blatant Left 4 Dead clone (or spiritual successor if you’re being generous). B4B never captured the momentum of the game that inspired it (failing to surpass the original in concurrent users on Steam) but it was an entertaining enough on its own – and the closest thing PS4 and PS5 users are going to get to Left 4 Dead – since Valve has shown no interest in reviving the co-op zombie series. As of 2023, rumors suggested a sequel might still be in development – but no updates have been shared since. As a result, it might be awhile before we get more Left 4 Dead-inspired co-op zombie content, so a price of just $6 could be a worthy pickup to scratch that itch.

Lastly, Super Mega Baseball 4 is a great alternative to MLB The Show for those that want a more arcadey experience rather than a realistic sim, at a fraction of the price. We previously reviewed SMB 4 and gave it a solid 4/5 score – citing that the game successfully recaptured the fun of coming home from school Super Mega Baseball 4 takes players back to the childhood days of coming home from school and firing up an accessible but equally deep sports game to play with friends.

Live service games are one of the best ways to generate continuous income as a game studio or publisher, as they require much less overall work than developing a completely new title. It’s no wonder, then, that the games-as-service model is becoming more and more popular as studios scramble for funds, as they would rather devote time to maintaining an already-existing game than building one from the ground up in order to get another surge of funding.

Unfortunately, not every publisher seems capable of creating live-service games, as can be seen in Sony’s bizarre struggle to establish one of their own.

Live Service Games Are Successful on PS4 & PS5

Sea of Thieves Season 16

Despite Sony’s lack of live service games published under the PlayStation Studios name, live service titles have been a smash hit on the console. Bungie’s Destiny franchise, despite criticisms of the company, is a live service game that’s been running and earning revenue for a decade. Sea of Thieves has also been highly successful on the PlayStation after its addition, joining Helldivers 2 in earning Sony quite a bit of money in 2024. Looking at this list, it appears that Sony has more than enough live service games under its belt, but one thing stands out: none of these games were developed under Sony’s supervision.

Despite the numerous live service titles offered on their PlayStation console, Sony Interactive Entertainment doesn’t currently lay claim to any live service games under their sundry first-party development studios and the PlayStation Studios name. Sony sees quite a bit of the revenue generated by their live service library, but they seem to be struggling with creating one to call their own. As a consequence of Concord‘s high-profile failure when it released in August of 2024, Sony has stepped back from a number of live service versions of preexisting Sony titles, instead scrapping them with little explanation.

Why Has Sony Failed to Make Its Own Live Service Game?

concord.png

PlayStation hosts a bevy of different styles of live service titles, but despite the library of games to draw inspiration from, Sony hasn’t produced anything of note in the format. Its most recent cancellation, a multiplayer God of War title being developed by Bluepoint Games, was canned in early 2025 and makes the ninth in the list of binned live service games being developed by Sony subsidiaries. It joins cancelled live service versions of Spider-Man from Insomniac, The Last of Us from Naughty Dog, and a few unnamed games by subsidiary studios.

For some reason, Sony seems to be struggling to create something meaningful in the live service format. Concord spent eight years in development, starting around the same time that Overwatch did, and was released to an already-saturated market full of free-to-play hero shooters that had already established audiences. It’s unclear whether its release was a sunk-cost fallacy issue or just marked a staggering lack of awareness by the Sony market-research team, but either way, the game was a resounding failure. Unable to learn from the many games available on their console, there have been no meaningful steps from Sony and PlayStation Interactive towards an original live service game.

Sony Needs a Break From New Live Service Titles

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games.

Rather than running themselves into the brick wall of live service failure, Sony needs to ensure they’re supporting the games that made them what they are: single-player RPG experiences. The God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man franchises are some of Sony’s most successful, proving that Sony knows how to make an excellent action RPG that people will love. It seems pointless to announce, develop, and then cancel a live service game that won’t earn any money when that energy could be more effectively spent making games people will enjoy.

Particularly when PlayStation-hosted live service games already make Sony quite a bit of money, around 20-30% of their revenue in 2024, according to Sony CFO Lin Tao. She mentioned that live service games created a new stream of revenue that didn’t exist for the company, so Sony would continue to pursue them, but is this a mistake when they’re already making a significant amount of their money from already existing titles? It’s clear that Sony is still learning what makes a live-service game work, and it’s a bit of a waste to push a live-service angle when the publisher isn’t prepared for it.

A new remaster of a popular PS3 game from the past has seemingly leaked ahead of its official reveal. While many games from the PlayStation 3 era have started to make the jump to current-gen platforms, there are still countless others stuck on the hardware. PS3 games like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Infamous, the Resistance trilogy, Puppeteer, Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2, and so many others remain trapped on the “retro” PlayStation console. Fortunately, it looks like one of those games that remains gridlocked to PS3 should soon be coming back in a new fashion shortly.

Recently, publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment posted a scheduled video to its YouTube channel that was meant to go live on August 18th. The video was titled “Tales of Series News” and is meant to touch on information tied to the publisher’s beloved “Tales of” RPG franchise. While the video was quickly removed, seemingly because it was posted in advance of an official announcement, that didn’t keep fans from spotting one major reveal that should take place during the broadcast.

Specifically, the thumbnail for this scheduled video happened to feature characters from the game Tales of Xillia. Released originally in 2011 (and later in 2013 for the West), Tales of Xillia was quite a popular RPG that only ever came to PS3. It went on to spawn a sequel, the aptly titled Tales of Xillia 2, which was also only available on PS3. Despite the popularity of these two Tales games, Bandai Namco has never brought them to any other platforms over the past decade. Luckily, if this leak is anything to go by, that should now be changing.

For characters from Tales of Xillia to have appeared in this leaked video, it suggests that Bandai Namco is bringing back the game (and potentially its sequel) with a new remaster that will likely hit PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC platforms. This would also be in line with previous moves that Bandai has made, such as remastering Tales of Graces f earlier in 2025. Bandai Namco also said that it would be announcing a new Tales remaster at some point in the middle of this year as a way of celebrating the 30th anniversary of the franchise. As a result, the potential for Tales of Xillia to be remastered isn’t much of a shock, but it is surely exciting to many fans around the globe.

For now, we don’t know exactly when Tales of Xillia Remastered will be unveiled to the world, but we’ll likely find out more in the coming days.

An RPG available for free via PlayStation Plus is being hailed as a “hidden gem” by PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium subscribers. For those that don’t know, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium are the middle and most expensive tiers of PlayStation Plus, and both include a large, evolving library of PS4 and PS5 games that Sony regularly freshens by removing older games and adding new ones. At any given time though there are hundreds of games to choose from, so naturally many games don’t register a ton of interest.

One game in particular that has been overlooked since it was added to PS Plus, and was generally overlooked when it released last year, is Banishers: Ghost of New Eden, an action-RPG from developer Dontnod Entertainment, a studio best known for the Life Is Strange series. Upon release, the RPG earned a very solid 81 on Metacritic – while some fans even compared the game to Witcher 3; still, it was a commercial disappointment according to Dontnod Entertainment. To this end, it has never seemed to draw much attention on PS Plus either. Maybe this is changing though, because one of the top posts on the PS Plus Reddit page this month is a post recommending the RPG.

“A hidden gem – Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden,” reads the title of the post. “If you are wondering what to play next, try banisher. I’m baffled how I have never heard of this game….Highly recommend that game. If gameplay and enemies were better I would mention this game in the same sentence with Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077 or Horizon Zero Dawn.”

Given the critical acclaim of Life is Strange (which is available in one complete collection), it’s still surprising it’s taken this long for the game to get recognized.

In isolation one opinion and a previous pedigree is not entirely noteworthy, but it the post is not an isolated opinion – as the popularity of the post and some of the comments prove: there are a lot of Banishers fans out there.

“The first game in a long time to really capture me. The story, characters and writing are top tier,” reads one of the comments. “The gameplay is fine. Combat is fun enough. It’s not a drag, it’s just not great. Can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this before. I definitely recommend it.”

Another comment adds: “I bought and played it at its launch and I really liked everything, I like Dontnod games since Remember Me, but they don’t have the marketing power that others do and they even had millions in losses with that game, it’s a shame because it’s fabulous.”

that decide to check Banishers: Ghost of New Eden based on these recommendations should expect to sit down with the RPG for at least 20 to 25 hours just to mainline it. Add in side content and this number is somewhere between 40 to 50 hours long. Completionists, meanwhile, will need more like 60 hours with the free RPG.

How long Banishers: Ghost of New Eden will be available via PS Plus, we do not know since that information, per usual, is not available. As long as it is though, it saves subscribers from paying $50 for the PS5 game.

A new PS4 and PS5 console exclusive game is releasing later this month on August 25. Console exclusive refers to a game that is only available on one console platform, in this case PlayStation. In other words it isn’t available on Nintendo platforms nor Xbox platforms, and this is not changing on August 25 like it is with PlayStation platforms. The game, a horror game, has been available on Steam since last year though, so some gamers have had the opportunity to play it for a little while, and ultimately test for PlayStation users, who will enjoy not just all previous updates, but a major update releasing alongside the PlayStation version.

The horror game in question is called Zoochosis from developer Clapperheads, who has only ever released one other game before this, 2023’s Sparky Marky. And perhaps some of this inexperience has shown in Zoochosis, as reception has been mixed. However, its premise is certainly interesting, and there aren’t many horror games releasing at any given time, let alone as console exclusives on PlayStation.

Check out the synopsis for the game below:

“Zoochosis is a spine-chilling bodycam horror simulation game where you play a zookeeper about to start their first night shift,” reads an official description of the game for those curious to know more after watching the trailer above. “As you strap on your bodycam and go about your rounds, you notice strange behavior from some of the animals in the enclosures, unlike anything you have ever seen. A terrifying parasite is spreading, mutating some of the animals into grotesque versions of themselves, blood-thirsty and ready to do anything to kill you to escape. You must identify the infected animals and make vaccines to cure them before the parasite spreads out of control and to the wider zoo. Unravel the mysteries of the zoo and save the animals to save yourself, as your choices will ultimately determine your ending. Will you survive the night?”

As mentioned, reviews are mixed but there are some players who had fun with the game (in spite of their criticisms). Here are a few from the game’s metacritic page.

  • “Man, what a waste of potential this game is. It is so close to being excellent but just doesn’t quite get there. I love the premise, the monster designs, the gross and weird story, the sound design.” – Spassbremse

The biggest criticisms center around unresolved bugs – something that, in theory, could be patched to improve the experience:

  • “This game [has too many bugs]. While the designs are beautiful, it has so [many] bugs!” – h3whgmxshg

There is currently no option to pre-order Zoochosis on the PlayStation Store right now, so it is unclear what it will cost on PSN, but it will presumably be the same price point that it runs at on Steam, which is $24.99. Meanwhile, there is also no word, let alone any details, on PS5 Pro support for the upcoming horror game.

Those that end up checking out Zoochosis on PS4, PS5, or PS5 Pro should expect a fairly short game that clocks in, on average between two to three hours long. However, completionists will need closer to five to six hours with the horror game.

Every PlayStation generation has been filled with bangers, but there has always been one that has stood out. A game that either innovated the industry or a franchise that reinvented itself with a new entry. Whether it was for the PlayStation 2 or the PlayStation 5, these titles utilised every ounce of power available.

This list will take you through the PlayStation’s many different generations and highlight the best game that appeared on the PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. These will be titles that best represent each PlayStation console. Ones that had amazing visuals and a terrific story, worthy of naming them the best PlayStation game of that era. With that said, here are the best games from every PlayStation console generation.

Metal Gear Solid – PlayStation 1

Image: Konami

Metal Gear Solid was a huge achievement for the PlayStation 1 era. It was a cinematic storytelling game featuring a complex narrative and a 3D structured environment. Gameplay had stealth at its core. Action games were the norm at the time, and stealth being fun was the last thing anyone expected. But Metal Gear Solid 1 went in favor of creating something unique and managed to make one of the best stealth gameplay loops.

Metal Gear Solid 1 had cinematic storytelling and innovative gameplay. It strengthened the case for video games as an art form. And for that reason, it was one of the first notable games presented in 3D that went beyond just copying what’s popular. Metal Gear Solid was fun on the PlayStation 1, and its remasters are just as much. Looking back now, it’s truly a game that symbolizes the best games of the PlayStation 1 console generation.

Shadow of the Colossus – PlayStation 2

Image: Japan Studio

There are arguments for God of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 as the best PlayStation 2 games ever made. But while they are masterpieces too, it’s hard to ignore the impact of Shadow of the Colossus.

Shadow of the Colossus was ahead of its time. In an era where platformers and action games were mainstream, Shadow of the Colossus took a big risk by being a puzzle adventure game. It featured a seamless, interconnected open world where only sixteen giant colossi roamed. There were no other NPCs, points of interest, or towns at all. It was just a beautiful, desolate landscape backed by a calming color palette and a clear direction of what to do.

You were to eliminate the colossi in the hope of resurrecting a loved one. Shadow of the Colossus was a minimalist game. With minimal encounters, no flashy upgrade screens, and no versatile combat system. It was a pure puzzle adventure game riding on an emotional story. Fortunately, everyone loved Shadow of the Colossus, and its impact has been so great that it’d be hard to go against its placement as the best PlayStation 2 game.

The Last of Us – PlayStation 3

Image: Naughty Dog

The Last of Us is one of the best games on the PlayStation 3 to tell a grounded narrative. Its story uses the entire world as its playground, but despite its scale, it never remains a stranger to displaying emotional interactions between characters. The themes of loss, hope, and human connections are all brilliantly represented in the narrative.

But when the narrative takes a back seat, plenty of stealth-driven segments fill in the gaps. You’re constantly navigating a post-apocalyptic world with both human and monster threats. When bandits aren’t hot on your trail, you are trying to slip by infected zombies. And when neither of the two works out, engaging in tough gunfights is the only option. All these encounters are further made memorable by visuals. Given how it succeeds in every aspect, there’s simply no denying that The Last of Us is the peak of the PlayStation 3.

God of War (2018) – PlayStation 4

Image: Santa Monica Studio

As talked about before, the God of War series is one of PlayStation’s best IPs. God of War 2, in particular, was so good that it could be called the best PlayStation 2 game of all time. In the series’ history, though, there was a point where its future was unclear. After God of War: Ascension was released in 2013, there was a question as to what the next game in the series would look like.

If God of War delivered another title with the same aerial view and beat ‘em up combat, it’d just be more of the same. Studios were putting out innovative content for the PlayStation 4, and it seemed like God of War wouldn’t be able to keep up. But then the unexpected happened. The series reinvented itself with God of War (2018). This God of War was a soft reboot. It kept Kratos’ backstory but dived into the new Norse Mythology. Combat was now more intense, slower, and evolved throughout the game. The aerial perspective was dropped for an over-the-shoulder view, and that helped tell a tight-knit narrative.

This time, we saw the fatherly side of Kratos, one that nobody thought existed. The journey to spread his wife’s ashes was wholesome. And times when Kratos lost his cool would bring out the retired God of War hidden inside him. God of War (2018) was simply a wild ride from start to finish. From visuals and gameplay to the narrative, it delivered on every aspect, and in retrospect, there is no doubt in calling it the best PlayStation 4 game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – PlayStation 5

Image: Insomniac Games

We’re still a long way out from the PlayStation 5 era officially ending. For now, though, it’s easy to call Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 the best PlayStation 5 game to date. For starters, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the ultimate showcase of the PS5’s power. The game has instant load times. Even if you fast-travel, there is no loading screen, only a buttery smooth transition. There is a 60fps Performance Mode and a dynamic 4K 30fps Fidelity Mode. And the best part is, both modes have ray tracing and don’t stutter. That goes to show you how well Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is optimized and designed for the PS5.

But when putting the technical aspects aside, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also excels as a game. It has a gorgeous and gigantic open-world. Spider-Man’s swinging has never been so smooth, and this time, he can glide as well. Combat has a whole new layer of depth to it, and new superpowers are included. A large number of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery is present too, and no other game has been able to recreate such a lively superhero experience. All in all, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the best PS5 game yet.

Ubisoft is reportedly set to bring back one of its classic series that got its start on the PS1. And the news is that Ubisoft is reportedly planning a massive revival of one of its most nostalgic series, and a series that hasn’t been completely dormant, but certainly driving backseat behind more modern Ubisoft series such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and licensed IP such as Avatar and Star Wars.

According to a new report from Nash Weedle, a source best known for reports and leaks pertaining to Nintendo, suggests that Ubisoft is set to revive the Rayman series. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a Rayman revival but contains new Ubisoft information being shared by an insider with a legitimate track record. Elaborating, Nash Weedle relayed word that Ubisoft has big plans for Rayman and he outlines what these plans are. According to the insider, there are actually two Rayman games currently in development at Ubisoft, with a compilation release featuring classic games in the series also being considered by the French-Canadian games maker.

Adding to this, the leaker claims that Ubisoft is aiming to merge 3D gameplay with the artistic style of Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. At the very least, this is what testing so far has indicated. The report then concludes by mentioning that Ubisoft may be showing the games off behind the scenes at Gamescom later this month, likely to potential partners such as Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox, though this is not specifically clarified.

Of course, take everything here with a grain of salt. Nothing is unofficial, and certainly subject to change. In other words, even if this reports of Rayman returning are all correct, it doesn’t mean it will remain accurate over time as things in game development change all the time.

At the moment of publishing, Ubisoft has not been drawn out for comment. We do not expect this to change as it rarely comments on reports, rumors, leaks, or speculation. If it does come out with any type of comment, salient or not, we will update the story accordingly.

The idea that Ubisoft would revive Rayman in major fashion would not be that surprising, especially if it is going to be as a 3D platformer. While fans of the series may prefer 2D, there is less of a market for this. Meanwhile, it has been 12 years since the last Rayman game, Rayman Legends, so it feels time Ubisoft dust the series off.

The PlayStation Store‘s 2025 “Gamescom Sale” celebrates the biggest annual European gaming convention. It takes place in Cologne, Germany and often has many medium-to-big announcements. And while the show’s contents have yet to be revealed, its sale is out there and contains a wealth of indie hits and big budget titles.

Here are 10 of the best discounts in the “Gamescom Sale” on the PlayStation Store. All deals listed here will be live until August 27th at 11:59 pm.

1) Sorry We’re Closed

Price: $19.99 or $18.74 for PlayStation Plus subscribers / $24.99

Sorry We’re Closed takes inspiration from the PS1 era of Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but it’s much more than a throwback survival horror game. It takes cues from those titles regarding the puzzles and monster-filled dungeons, but adds a splash of its own color to differentiate itself. This color is literal and metaphorical, as Sorry We’re Closed has many neon hues that give it a more distinct style that’s not often seen in the horror genre. Its unique metaphorical colors come in the form of its well-told story that delves deeply into love and relationships, topics rare in horror games. This, coupled with a unique weak spot-based combat system, makes Sorry We’re Closed one of the most interesting entries in the genre in some time.

2) Chants of Senaar

Price: $12.99 / $19.99

Chants of Senaar gamifies the act of learning a new language by weaving this act into its puzzles. Players must use deductive reasoning and context clues to translate these runes in order to progress and make sense of this alien world. It’s designed to make wannabe translators feel intelligent and is a puzzle game with its own special twist.

3) Far Cry 4 + Far Cry Primal Bundle

Price: $7.49 / $49.99

Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal aren’t always brought up as the best Far Cry games, but they’re still great entries and make this bundle a solid deal. Far Cry 4 takes place in the Nepal-inspired country of Kyrat and centers around the flamboyant villain, Pagan Min. Even though it is outdone by Far Cry 6, the Nepalese territory gives players plenty of chances to wreak havoc in a part of the world not often seen in video games.

Far Cry Primal doesn’t have as direct a parallel to other installments, as it takes place during prehistoric times and revolves around more primitive weaponry. While this limitation seems like a drawback, this setup gives Primal a different flavor when compared to other Far Cry games and means it still sticks out. The Survivor mode Ubisoft added in a post-launch update even makes the experience all the more tense by making nighttime much darker and requiring players to roleplay a little more in order to survive.

4) Bloodrayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites

Price: $10.99 / $19.99

Bloodrayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites is a remixed version of the 2011 original that addresses one of the biggest complaints of that initial release: its difficulty. In addition to its tough default mode, Fresh Bites has an easier setting that newer players might find more enticing. All-new voice acting and a higher resolution and frame rate make Fresh Bites a better overall package, but its gameplay has essentially gone untouched. It’s a straightforward platformer with combat sections that push players to think carefully, since health regeneration is tied to stunning victims first. It’s not developer WayForward’s most notable game, but it’s still a solid entry in its lineup.

5) Until Then

Price: $10.99 / $19.99

Until Then is a unique narrative-focused title starring a coming-of-age slacker set in a fictional city in the Philippines after a global calamity has devastated many. While a rather run-of-the-mill premise, Until Then excels because of its well-realized cast, lovely pixelated art style, and focus on Filipino representation. This Night in the Woods-esque tale is able to use these strengths to carve out its own spot on the totem pole of respected narrative adventure games.

6) Lost in Random: The Eternal Die

Price: $19.99 or $18.74 for PlayStation Plus subscribers / $24.99

Lost in Random was initially an action game, but its spin-off, The Eternal Die, veered into Hades territory with its isometric roguelite gameplay. Supergiant Games’ magnum opus leaves some big shoes to fill, but The Eternal Die manages the daunting comparison reasonably well with tight gameplay filled with various build options and the same Tim Burton-esque art style carried the original. It even leverages the dice-based nature of the world to great effect and feeds into the randomness that often fuels the genre.

7) Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Price: $4.49 / $29.99

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate bore the brunt of Unity‘s failings the year prior, but has become one of the more celebrated installments in the series over the last decade. It’s the last Assassin’s Creed before Origins took it into RPG territory and benefits from more tailored mission design, in addition to a grappling hook that makes scaling London’s tall buildings a breeze. Jacob and Evie Frye also make for an engaging pair of hosts who help the admittedly choppy story along. After initially having issues on PS5, Ubisoft not only fixed those problems but also later went back and upped the performance and resolution, meaning it runs at 4K at 60 frames per second on the latest Sony console.

8) Street Fighter 6

Price: $29.99 / $39.99

Street Fighter 6‘s latest season just started, and the game is still thriving and in a great place, something its two biggest competitors can’t quite claim. This fighting game took cues from Street Fighter 5‘s failings in order to create a fuller package that is stuffed with features and, most importantly, a thrill to play with its flashy combat and array of well-realized characters. The solo World Tour mode is a drag, but the online Battle Hub and more traditional online modes are implemented well and give Street Fighter 6 the means to live on for years to come.

9) GigaBash

Image Courtesy of Passion Republic Games

Price: $8.74 or $6.24 for PlayStation Plus subscribers / $24.99

GigaBash is a multiplayer kaiju brawler in the vein of Power Stone, and that alone is enticing. But this silly game, best played locally, is able to cement itself in that niche through its approachable controls that still give more hardcore users plenty to take advantage of. And even though it’s got plenty of original monsters that more than support the game, developer Passion Republic Games also added multiple fitting characters from the Ultraman and Godzilla universes in the form of premium DLC.

10) South Park: The Video Game Collection

Price: $8.99 / $59.99

South Park is having a bit of a moment now because of its explosive 27th season, so it’s only fitting to go back and revisit the best two South Park games, The Stick of Truth and A Fractured But Whole. The Stick of Truth takes many loving jabs at a handful of RPGs, especially Skyrim, but isn’t there just to tease other games; it’s also got its own surprisingly deep turn-based combat system and a wild, raunchy story worth seeing through. And it’s easy to hit credits, too, since it’s only around a dozen or so hours, avoiding the bloat that often plagues the genre. A Fractured But Whole is more of a tactical RPG and doesn’t quite hit its predecessor’s highs, but is still a silly tale sending up superhero media with combat that has more than its share of strategic highs.

It’s a strange thing to consider that while the cost of most things has increased with economic inflation over time, the regular price of a video game has mostly stayed the same, despite AAA games becoming money-absorbing behemoths on par with blockbuster movie productions. Shawn Layden, the former President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently addressed the dilemma surrounding gamers’ resistance to upfront costs, stating that gaming studios attempted to increase the costs of games too late, a mistake that may endanger the industry now that it is changing.

Earlier this year, Nintendo and Microsoft announced plans to increase the regular price of games to $80, sparking a firestorm of backlash online. The online pressure against the price increase has been so intense that Xbox was recently forced to cave, revising prices on upcoming titles like The Outer Worlds 2 back to $70, issuing refunds, and promising that its holiday releases will remain at $69.99.

“We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,” an Xbox spokesperson told Windows Central in a statement.

Even as gamers break records on subscription service spending, they have also become accustomed to obtaining games at the lowest possible price, relying on sales and free availability through things like Xbox Game Pass at launch. This creates a dilemma for game developers, who have not raised the price of games in decades and are unable to rely as much on the sales of individual copies as they once did.

“I think it’s because everyone’s afraid,” Layden told Gamesindustry.biz, explaining why game prices have remained the same. “No one wants to be the first one to raise the price, because you’re afraid to lose traffic. So what you do is you just end up eating into your operating income, your profit margin.”

Layden observed the effects of this price stagnation as game development became increasingly sophisticated over the years.

“There were more sports cars in the parking lot in the PS1 era than there were in the PS4 era, because if you’re selling 20 million units at $60 for something that only cost you $10 million to make. That’s different than selling 20 million units at $60 for something that cost you $160 million to make.”

Layden believes that issues like the recent $80 pricing debacle were the result of developers waiting too long, stating that they should have prepared by gradually raising prices over the years to soften the impact of price increases.

The industry decided instead to maintain the same price expectation while focusing on increasing its customer base as much as possible, without a plan for what would happen when the growth potential stalled. Unfortunately, gaming budgets also ballooned during this same period to meet expectations of fully voiced, movie-level quality products. This forced developers to rely more on DLC, microtransactions, free-to-play monetization, and now subscription services to compensate for the shortfall. However, this strategy, too, may spell trouble for the gaming industry.

“That upfront price is such a barrier to get people even to try a game,” said Mat Piscatella of Circana. “Because why am I going to spend $80 for this game when Fortnite is here, and I can just log in, and everyone’s there, and all my stuff’s there?”

It’s unclear what the gaming industry can do to turn things around now that gamer attitudes have been entrenched for so long. Will big studios have to abandon riskier and more expensive projects in favor of sure hits? Will the games-as-a-service approach develop a stranglehold over the industry? Hopefully, there will be a way forward that industry players, developers, and the gaming public can all agree on to monetize their digital entertainment.

A new white paper analyzing spending trends for games, DLC, microtransactions, and subscriptions has revealed how gamers will spend this year and identified an interesting outsized influence among North American and European players. Despite these two groups representing only 20% of the total global player base, they account for almost half of global game spending. In total, North Americans spend $52.7 billion, and European players spend $33.1 billion annually.

The report, published by gaming monetization platform Tebex and video game industry market intelligence firm Newzoo, totaled the expenditures of PC, console, and mobile players worldwide to provide insights into the rise of gaming spending.

Based on the data collected from consumer spending on physical and digital gaming titles, the report projects that the global games market will reach $188.9 billion in revenue by the end of 2025, with North America and Europe accounting for 46% percent of that total.

This projection for 2025 indicates a 3.4% year-over-year increase in total global gaming spending, with North America expected to see a 4.2% increase and a 3.6% increase in Europe.

Newzoo notes that this revenue data has specific exclusions, like advertising dollars, taxes, and transactions in second-hand markets. The data also excludes certain B2B services and the betting and online gambling side of the games industry.

According to the report, North America is the leading region in the world for video game purchases, with the average gamer spending approximately $325 per year. These insights line up with other data points reported this year. In July, Mat Piscatella, senior director at market research firm Circana, reported that U.S. video game subscription spending reached an all-time high in May, following three consecutive months of growth.

US video game subscription spending reached an all-time monthly high in May 2025 ($0.6B), while experiencing its 3rd consecutive month of growth.Looks to me that the pressures of higher prices in everyday spending categories like food and general economic uncertainty has folks looking for value.

Mat Piscatella (@matpiscatella.bsky.social) 2025-07-09T13:23:54.142Z

Just what explains current game spending trends? One insight Piscatella mentions, also present in the Newzoo x Tebex report, is that value-driven in-game purchases are boosting revenue across different gaming platforms.

PC Players in North America do 50% of their spending in-game, along with 48% of console players. Mobile game players spend 99% of their gaming dollars on in-game purchase items like battle pass subscriptions, cosmetics, and other micro-transactions. It seems that players are also increasingly spending more on content or services separate from access to a full game copy.

In Europe, the share of in-game transactions is even higher for PC and console players, with rates similar to those for mobile games among those of North American players. However, European gamers spend almost three times less on average than their North American counterparts.

These are insights that big players in the video game industry seem to have already taken notice of. Microsoft continues to double down on its profitable Game Pass subscription service, a product whose efficacy has been doubted by some over the years. In July, The Verge reported that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed on a Q4 earnings call that Xbox Game Pass Revenue set a new record, nearly reaching $5 billion for the first time in 2024.

It seems like the gaming landscape will continue to shift toward in-game purchases and micro-transaction monetization strategies, which have led to an increase in spending as players resist $70 and $80 price tags for full-priced gaming experiences.

How much do you spend per year on video games? Do you come close to the projected North American average of $325 per year?

PlayStation gamers have an exciting month ahead this August, with 25 new games headed to the PS5. But PS Plus subscribers in the Extra and Premium tiers have even more to look forward to. Today, PlayStation announced its lineup for August 2025 PS Plus Extra and Premium games. And while the list isn’t that long, there are some truly stellar entries making their way to the subscription service on August 19th.

JRPG fans will be pleased to know this month’s lineup includes two excellent games, Unicorn Overlord and Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & The Secret Key. But that’s not all. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is also making an appearance, along with the newly reimagined version of Mortal Kombat 1. And for my fellow cozy gamers, the beloved farming sim Coral Island also makes an appearance. We’ve also got a day one release title in Sword of the Sea, which is a highly anticipated indie darling. Basically, there’s something for just about anyone to enjoy in the new PS Plus catalog additions this August.

Before we dig into the list, I do also want to note that there’s a new game preview for PS Premium subscribers this month. PlayStation gamers can check out the first 5 hours of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach starting on August 19th. If you’ve been on the fence about this new game, it’s a great opportunity to check it out before you fully commit. And as long as you grab the full game on your PS5, progress and achievements will carry over.

PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium Catalog Games for August 2025

Here’s every game available for both PS Plus Extra and Premium Subscribers starting on August 19th:

  • Mortal Kombat 1, PS5
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, PS4 & PS5
  • Sword of the Sea, PS5
  • Earth Defense Force 6, PS4 & PS5
  • Unicorn Overlord, PS4 & PS5
  • Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & The Secret Key, PS4 & PS5
  • Indika, PS5
  • Harold Halibut, PS5
  • Coral Island, PS5

For PS4 gamers sad to be losing live service games like Genshin Impact, it’s a solid lineup with several great PS4 titles to choose from.

These games are available only for Premium members. It’s a Resident Evil double feature in August, so it’s a good month to be a horror fan with a top-tier PS Plus subscription:

  • Resident Evil 2, PS4, PS5
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, PS4, PS5

Both of these titles were originally released for the first PlayStation, making this a nostalgic return. The games are enhanced, but not fully remastered, for modern PlayStation consoles. With the upcoming trailer reveal for Resident Evil: Requiem, it’s perfect timing for a nostalgic return to the franchise.

In all, the PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup for August 2025 is pretty solid. These games will all arrive on August 19th, so there’s not too long to wait before you grab your next game. These will join the lineup of free games available for PS Plus Essential subscribers in August, which were revealed at the start of the month.

The PlayStation 5 was released in 2020, and Sony fans have eagerly been anticipating the PlayStation 6. Recent comments by Sony’s Senior Vice President Sadahiko Hayakawa have indicated that the studio intends to focus less on hardware, seemingly following Microsoft’s approach to Xbox. However, with so much known about or leaked about the PS6, it is likely too far in development and unlikely to be affected by this business model.

The PlayStation 6 has seen numerous leaks over the years. Sony itself has not officially announced the console, but insider reports indicate it is moving along. The PlayStation 5 has proven to be incredibly popular, even spurring the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Sony release more hardware. If reports are true, fans could see the PS6 released in 2027 or 2028.

Based on leaks and comments by Sony’s staff, it is almost guaranteed that the PlayStation 6 is happening. Fans may see a reveal as early as 2026 if the timeline above is true. There will likely be about a year after the announcement before the console hits the shelves, so this will affect when Sony shows the new PlayStation. This gives time to build up hype for the console and generate pre-orders.

Will There Be PlayStation 7?

This new model by Sony could have major impacts on the PlayStation 7. Depending on how far Sony takes this new approach, it’s possible the PlayStation 6 could be the last console it produces. Sony may continue to look at handheld models to capitalize on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2’s success, possibly with a PS Vita 2. But this is a long shot.

The most plausible explanation for Sony’s new business model is releasing its exclusive games on other platforms. Fans have already seen numerous PlayStation games released on PC. Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us are just some of these. However, the biggest port from Sony comes later this month.

Helldivers 2 releases on Xbox Series X/S on August 26th, marking the first time an in-house Sony exclusive is releasing on an Xbox console. What’s even more surprising is the fact that Arrowhead Game Studios, the developer, revealed it was Sony that pushed for Helldivers 2 to release on Xbox. This is almost certainly the first step in Sony games coming to Xbox.

helldivers 2 marks the beginning of sony games coming to xbox.

Microsoft has already moved in this direction. Forza Horizon 5 proved to be one of the best-selling games on PlayStation 5 this year. If Sony can capture that same lightning by releasing its games on Xbox, this new model will prove to be very successful.

This just leaves the question of how Sony handles this going forward. Will it release games quickly or slowly release them? It also leaves the question of whether Sony games will be exclusive to PlayStation at first and then be released later on Xbox.

The future of PlayStation consoles largely depends on how effective this strategy is. If releasing its games on Xbox consoles is more lucrative than pouring money and resources into the PlayStation 7, fans may not see it. The PlayStation 6 is almost guaranteed to release, but after that, only time will tell.

It would appear that the next iteration of console gaming is already nearly upon us, with the newest generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles expected by many to make an appearance as soon as 2027. The upcoming PlayStation 6 (internally referred to as “Orion”) and the latest Xbox console (internally named “Magnus”) were always expected to deliver improvements over the current generation of consoles, however recent alleged leaks and rumors about the console’s specs give us an idea of just how advanced they’ll be compared to their predecessors. The alleged leaks also beg the question: which console is more powerful?

The collected information comes from various sources, including reputable leakers such as YouTuber “Moore’s Law Is Dead” and other documents found online. Other information, such as the amount of RAM available on each console, has been publicly speculated by industry experts, or leaked from an AMD presentation. Keep in mind that the legitimacy of these rumors varies, and that some (if not all) of these stats have a chance of being different when the PS6 and next Xbox are actually revealed.

PS6 & Next-Gen Xbox Rumored Specs Explained

Courtesy of PlayStation Studios

The following are the rumored specs for the upcoming PS6 and Xbox “Magnus” consoles, with the reported CPU, GPU, GPU clock speed, RAM, and Power systems listed alongside rumored Performance Targets and “focus points” as stated by various tech outlets. If you don’t know what these stats mean, don’t worry. There will be a brief explanation just below the lists on what each means and how it affects console performance.

PlayStation 6 (Orion) Rumored Specs:

  • CPU: 8-Core AMD Zen 6
  • GPU: 40–48 RDNA 5 compute units
  • GPU Clock Speed: 3+ GHz
  • RAM: GDDR7 SDRAM with a 160-bit or 192-bit bus, 24 GB of RAM is speculated
  • Power: Around 160W Thermal Design Power (TDP) (Lower than the PS5)

Performance Targets:

  • 3x Faster Rasterization than the PS5
  • Up to 10x faster ray racing than the PS5

Rumored Focus Points:

  • Power efficiency, cost constraints, and improved ray tracing

Xbox “Magnus” Rumored Specs:

  • CPU: 11-Core AMD Zen 6
  • GPU: 68 RDNA 5 compute units
  • GPU Clock Speed: Not Specified
  • RAM: GDDR7 SDRAM with a 192-bit bus, 24 GB of RAM is speculated
  • Power: Not Specified

Performance Targets:

Rumored Focus Points:

  • Modular design for a “family of devices”

So just what do all of these specs mean? If you’ve ever built a PC or looked at the system requirements section on a game’s store page, you might recognize some of the component names in the specifications lists.

  • A CPU, or “Central Processing Unit”, or just “Processor,” is essentially the brain of your device. It determines how quickly your console can “think,” performing complex actions, executing instructions, performing calculations, and managing the overall operation of your system. The more “Cores” your CPU has, the better.
  • A GPU is very similar, but it’s designed specifically for rendering visuals. Think of it as a brain designed to take the workload off of your CPU by strictly handling the processing of images. It renders your graphics and does it much better than a CPU and allows the CPU to handle other tasks, such as calculating AI behavior and other non-visual gaming logic.
  • A GPU’s clock speed is a measure of how many instructions the GPU can execute per second, which is usually measured in gigahertz (GHz). The faster your clock speed, the better.
  • RAM, or “random access memory,” is like a short-term memory storage for your system’s CPU that stores information needed to complete tasks. To simplify, typically, the more RAM a system has, the faster it loads things. Large, open-world games generally require a lot of RAM to play.
  • The Thermal Design Power (TDP) of a system is a measure of how much power the system can generate and is generally used to determine the range a consumer might use in power when using the console. A lower TDP is better.

Will The PS6 Or Xbox “Magnus” Be More Powerful?

courtesy of Xbox Game Studios

Based on what we know, we can determine that the rumored specs of the PS6 and Xbox “Magnus” point to one console being clearly superior: the Xbox “Magnus”.

While certain specifications, specifically the GPU clock speed and power supply of the Xbox were withheld from leaks and speculation, two GPU and CPU of the “Magnus” clearly point to the system being superior.

While both systems are said by an AMD report to be using AMD’s CPU and GPU architecture, the Xbox system appears to simply be packing more powerful versions of each device. The Xbox’s CPU will allegedly feature 11 Cores to the PlayStation’s eight, allowing for stronger computational power. The 68 RDNA 5 compute units also blows away the PS6’s rumored 40-48, giving the console a clear edge in graphical power too.

All of this information remains rumored and speculated upon for the time being. While these specifications come from credible leaks, it’s still possible that anything in here could change as we get closer to the actual release date of the PS6 and new Xbox.

Regardless, until we get any updates or changes to this information, we can assume that the next-generation Xbox console will be superior to the PlayStation 6, at least in terms of performance.

According to a new report, PS4 support is coming to an end soon, not from Sony, but from major developers and publishers still supporting the last-gen PlayStation console. The new report specifically claims that, in particular, “many operators of major online and live service titles” are lining up preparations in the name of finally ending support of the PS4. Of course, this suggests that the returns are no longer justifying the investment, which perhaps suggests more and more PS4 and PS4 Pro users are making the jump to PS5, or other modern hardware such as PC, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. And if this migration isn’t already quickening, then this will surely speed it up because it will no longer be as viable of a machine.

The report comes the way of GamesIndustry, who notes that not only are there diminishing returns on PS4, but the larger the PS5 install base gets, the less developers and publishers feel they need to have the PS4 around. Because not only does it cost money to have an extra version of the game and support it there, but it also makes development more complicated as the PS4 and its limitations have to be accounted for. To this end, GamesIndustry notes that the technical limitations of the 2013 console are also heavily weighing into considerations at this point.

The one thing the report is missing is a timeline. All that is said there is more than one company evaluating PS4 support at the moment, but what the timeline looks like is not said. To this end, whether this is something PS4 users should expect to surface more this year, in 2026, or beyond, we unfortunately do not know.

Of course, take this report with a grain of salt because it is both unofficial and a bit nebulous. Further, even if everything here is accurate, it is also subject to change. Even more than this, the claim itself is not really definitive. Eyeing up a plan and having a plan are two different things.

At the moment of publishing, PlayStation has not commented on this new report in any capacity. If this changes, we will be sure to update the story accordingly. That said, typically Sony does not comment on rumors and speculation.

A new free PlayStation Plus game is officially a huge hit, attracting over a million new players since it went free with the PlayStation subscription service earlier this month. And it remains free with any PS Plus subscription — PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium — until September 2. How many more PS Plus subscribers will check it out before then though, who knows, because it appears many have already. Not only is over a million new players an impressive get for the free PlayStation Plus game, but a seemingly unexpected achievement as since the game went free on PlayStation Plus it has had service issues, suggesting the developer did not anticipate the influx of new players to be as large as it has been.

This 1.3 million new players was specifically achieved in the first 24 hours of the game being available for free on all tiers of PS Plus, so not only was it a huge influx of players, but a rapid influx of new players. Ahead of the game’s PlayStation Plus launch, 300 new servers were added, but it was quickly apparent this was insufficient as these servers instantly filled up.

What makes this all the more unexpected is the new free PlayStation Plus game has been around since 2013, and specifically on PS4 since 2019. It doesn’t even have a PS5 version, though it is playable on the PS5 and PS5 Pro via backward compatibility. For those that have not connected the dots yet, the new free PlayStation Plus game is DayZ from Bohemia Interactive, which has attracted millions of players to date, making the fact that over 1.3 million PlayStation players were eager to try it out even more surprising. That said, how many of these new players are sticking with the game, we do not know.

To be clear, this is a full free game download. In other words, once this new PlayStation Plus game is claimed, it is free to keep forever, as long as you maintain an active subscription to any tier of PS Plus. If your subscription lapses, you will lose access to the free PlayStation Plus game until you subscribe back up, unless of course you buy it outright via a separate purchase. In the meantime, DayZ being free with any PS Plus subscription is saving PlayStation Plus subscribers from a $54.99 purchase on the PlayStation Store.

The PS5 is getting another Xbox console exclusive game next month. The Xbox console exclusive — currently not available on any console beyond Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X — has been an Xbox console exclusive for three years, so some assumed it may stay an Xbox exclusive perpetually. That said, the game is not even an Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, or Activision release, so it was unclear why it was exclusive to Xbox consoles in the first place. This was presumably the result of some type of deal struck between the publisher of the game and Xbox, but this has never confirmed. Whatever the case, the game is now coming to both PS4 and PS5 on September 2. Ahead of this, the game has been added to the PlayStation Store be Wishlisted, but right now there is no price. It will presumably cost what it comes on other platforms though, which is $18.99.

The port follows a string of ports of Xbox games to PS5. And it will come on the back of Xbox releasing one of its biggest games of 2025, Gears of War: Reloaded, on the PS5 the moment it launches on August 26. PS4, PS5, and PS5 Pro users should not get too excited though because the Xbox console exclusive coming to the PlayStation Store on September 2 is not as noteworthy.

The game in question is Lapin from developer Studio Doodal and publisher Flux Games. This, for those for that do not know, is a 2D, side-scrolling platformer that released in 2023, but this was a year after it debuted in 2022 in early access form. On Steam, the game has been a hit with users, as evident by a 93 percent approval rating. On Xbox though, gamers have been less impressed, as evident by its 3/5 stars on the Microsoft Store.

“Lapin is a 2D precision platformer game featuring a group of brave rabbit explorers,” reads an official description of the PlayStation-bound game. “Break through life-threatening obstacles with precise controls, and embark on an adventure filled with new encounters and stunning landscapes! The rabbits who lived underneath a park have to leave for a new home, as the humans started a renovation. Liebe, a cute white rabbit, leads an epic adventure with Captain, Bianca, Jose, and Montblanc. What will happen to these five rabbits on their tale? Join them on this unique adventure full of new friends, rabbit-threatening dangers, and beautiful scenery!”

Those on PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, and PS5 Pro interested in checking Lapin out when it hits the PlayStation Store next month should expect a game that ranges from 6 hours long to 14 hours long, depending on completion rate. In other words, it can be beaten in six hours, but you will need more than double this to 100 percent the game.

10 Things Even God of War Fans Don’t Know About Kratos https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/god-of-war-kratos-facts/ https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/god-of-war-kratos-facts/#respond Sat, 09 Aug 2025 19:00:00 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1445634 Image: Santa Monica

God of War’s popularity has skyrocketed. It’s PlayStation’s biggest IP and not just because of the gameplay, but also because it has one of the most iconic video game protagonists of all time, Kratos. The Ghost of Sparta has a rich history. From brutally ending the Greek Pantheon to building a new life within the Norse Realms, there are many layers to Kratos’ story.

But even the most devoted fans might have missed out on key details. Facts both inside and outside the video games that are hard to come across if you aren’t a die-hard fan. So, whether you’re a player from the early Greek saga days or have just joined in on Kratos’ most recent endeavors across the Nine Realms, here are surprising facts about the God of War you might not know.

1) Kratos Has an Even More Tragic Backstory in the 2010 Comic

Image: Santa Monica Studio

We know much about Kratos and his daughter, Calliope. However, the 2010 God of War comic book dives deeper into their backstories, and if you haven’t read it, you’re missing out on a key memory. In the comic, it’s revealed that Kratos’ daughter, Calliope, was cursed by Ares with a skin sickness. Afraid that she will be executed by the King, Kratos sets out to find the Asclepius’ ambrosia, a fabled medicine that can cure any condition.

Kratos overcomes a lot of obstacles to find the said ambrosia. He eventually heals Calliope and gives the remaining ambrosia to the kingdom. Later, after the events of God of War take place and Kratos kills Ares, he returns to the place where he found the ambrosia. Kratos then destroys the tree since the ambrosia could revive a fallen member of the Greek Pantheon.

2) Kratos Has Fought Sackboy, Raiden, & Many More

Image: Santa Monica Studio

In 2012, a crossover game called PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was released. It featured characters like Kratos, Sly Cooper, Raiden, Ratchet & Clank, as well as many other heroes from across PlayStation’s most prominent IPs. All-Stars Battle Royale was styled like the Super Smash Bros. games, that is, like a platform fighter.

Given this was a crossover game of no narrative importance, everyone assumed it was non-canonical. However, there’s a dialogue in God of War: Ragnarok that suggests otherwise. During free roam, Mimir asks Kratos about a rumor saying he fought in a tournament against “beasts, scoundrels, princesses, the undead, automatons, and… history’s greatest musician”. Kratos replies, “I would not speak of this.” While that’s not a firm yes, it definitely does imply that Kratos has traveled through the multiverse.

3) Kratos’ Skin Tone Is A Disturbing Reminder

Image: Santa Monica Studio

Have you ever wondered why Kratos has white skin? Fans of the Greek God of War saga know the answer to this. But if you’re someone who joined the series from God of War (2018), and only knows bits and pieces of the old games, you probably don’t know why Kratos is pale white.

In the first God of War game, Kratos murders his wife and daughter after being manipulated by Ares. An Oracle then curses Kratos and binds the ashes of his family to his skin, resulting in a white tone. Since that day, Kratos became known as the “Ghost of Sparta” and lives each day carrying the weight of his past literally on his skin.

4) Kratos Originally Had Blue Tattoos

Image: Santa Monica Studio

One of the fun “what ifs” about Kratos is how he’d look with a blue tattoo instead of red. But most people don’t know that Kratos was originally designed with blue tattoos. In fact, it was only a little while before God of War was released that the tattoo color was changed to red.

Back in the very early 2000s, Diablo 2 was one of the most popular games on the market. It had a character called The Barbarian, a grumpy-looking warrior with blue tattoos. Kratos’ build was quite similar to The Barbarian, and while the tattoo design was different, the blue color had some resemblance. As per the developers, very late into production, they realized that this could become a legal issue, or Kratos might be mocked as a copycat of The Barbarian. So, Santa Monica decided to change the color, opting for red in the final version.

Crazy to think the iconic Kratos would have had blue tattoos if not for a random Diablo character whom hardly anyone remembers.

5) Kratos Has A Brother

Image: Santa Monica Studio

The God of War: Ghost of Sparta spin-off shows more of Kratos’ childhood. It was one filled with trials and tribulations, but Kratos saw the good in life, that was, until his brother Deimos was kidnapped by Ares. Many years later, the events of Ghost of Sparta begin, and Kratos decides to search for his brother.

During his quest, he first locates his mother, Callisto, fights through a long list of monsters, and finally finds Deimos in the Domain of Death. Deimos and Kratos reconcile, but unfortunately, Deimos is killed shortly after by Thanatos. Kratos avenges Deimos; however, his brother’s demise is the final deciding factor in Kratos’ crusade to kill the Greek Pantheon.

6) Kratos Hates Pantheons

Image: Santa Monica Studio

There’s an interesting fact about Kratos that in every single mainline God of War game, he’s killed at least one member of the Greek or Norse Pantheons. In God of War 1, it was Ares. In the second game, it was Athena. Hades, Zeus, Poseidon, and the deaths of many others followed in the third, while Baldur met his demise in God of War 2018. And most recently, Heimdall was one of the victims in God of War: Ragnarok.

Kratos was a Spartan General, then became Ares’ champion, and then took Ares’ throne as the new God of War. He then went on to wipe out the entire Greek Pantheon before disappearing and reemerging in Norse mythology. Once again, Kratos fought new deities and executed members of the Norse Pantheon this time. Kratos’ kill count is definitely very high, and from that, at least 30 were deities.

7) Kratos Has Died, A Lot

Image: Santa Monica Studio

While this isn’t so in the Norse saga, Kratos has actually died plenty of times in the past. In God of War 1, he was killed by Ares, but then his soul escaped the underworld to return. In God of War 2, Zeus murdered Kratos, but his death was short-lived once again because the Titan Gaia revived him.

In almost every God of War game, Kratos has either died, come close to dying, or has been prophesied to die soon. Of course, that’s not a surprise considering Kratos frequently finds himself in life-threatening situations. Fun fact: In an early draft for God of War: Ragnarok, Kratos was going to die, too. The game would then have followed with us playing as Atreus and rescuing Kratos from Helheim. Canonically, Kratos has died about 4-5 times, and that number is bound to go up in future games. But, well, who’s keeping count?

8) Kratos’ Tattoos Have Shifted Position Between Games

Image: Santa Monica Studio

Being turned from blue to red isn’t the only change Kratos’ tattoos have undergone. Now, not many fans have noticed this detail, but if you pay attention to Kratos’ tattoos between all the different God of War games, you’ll see there are subtle differences. For instance, in the Greek saga, the tattoos are clearly much bigger.

In the younger Greek Kratos, the tattoo on the arms extends below the shoulder and over the bicep. In the Norse Kratos character model, it’s limited to the shoulder area. However, there’s a bigger difference in the tattoo size and design between the God of War 1 and 2 Kratos models. In the first game, Kratos’ shoulder tattoo had a completely different design, and on the chest extension, it was big. In the second game, the design on the shoulder was changed while the chest extension size decreased by nearly half.

9) The Beard Wasn’t In The Early Concepts for God of War (2018)

Image: Santa Monica Studio

Imagining Kratos without a beard would be really weird, especially following his Norse iteration. But as a matter of fact, Santa Monica wasn’t hell bent on adding the beard at all. That was more of a logical decision, which came later on.

In the early development days of God of War (2018), the studio worked with a concept artist to design Kratos. There were a number of potential models, but then the bearded version came along, and it just made sense to use that as the foundation. Kratos was supposed to be older, more mature, a bit calmer than before, and a bigger beard was a perfect physical representation of those aspects. Santa Monica decided to go with that, and today, Kratos’ beard is one of the most iconic beards in video game history.

10) Kratos Is Taller In The Old Games

Image: Santa Monica Studio

There are some minor inconsistencies throughout the God of War series. One specifically about Kratos’ height. In the older Greek games, Kratos is 7 feet 8 inches tall. However, in the God of War Norse continuity, Kratos is 6 feet 4 inches tall. This was actually a Kratos redesign.

The older God of War games are more stylized. Their world scale is also large, and the fixed camera angles always make everything else, including Kratos, look small. In contrast, the newer Norse saga games are grounded. The over-the-shoulder camera view makes Kratos feel more human than demigod. The Norse world’s scale is smaller, too.

Because of the larger-than-life nature of the Greek games, Kratos being taller felt natural. However, in the Norse saga, the over-the-shoulder camera wouldn’t have worked that well, so Santa Monica adjusted Kratos’ height to better suit the narrative.

Sony recently removed features from PlayStation 4 consoles, which, in some sense, have made the PS4 worse in the process. The back-end update actually happened earlier this year, but appears to have gone completely unnoticed until now. That said, while Sony did publish the changes on an official website, it made no effort to bring attention to the update. Consequently, we have no idea why the changes have been made, just that they have been made.

More specifically, back in March of 2025, Sony issued a back-end update, meaning no download was required by PS4 and PS4 Pro users. Due to the lack of download, no attention was brought to the update, however, Sony did publish the change. And the change is that PS4 and PS4 Pro users no longer are able to share their posts and activities with “Anyone” nor “Friends of Friends.” Rather, posts and activities will strictly be limited to your Friends list. Meanwhile, the option to hide posts and activities completely is still available via the “No One option.”

In addition to this, there have also been some changes on activities, specifically. To this end, the option Comment, Like, and Share functionality has been removed with this update.

Again, why all of this has been changed, we do not know, but it likely sets the standard for the PS5, the PS6, and beyond. And of course, this also sets a precedent, with that precedent being that Sony can and will remove features as it sees fit, sometimes 12 years after a console’s release, like in this instance. That said, this instance isn’t that noteworthy, which is probably how it went unnoticed, despite there being still millions of active PS4 users. Still, you don’t like to see Sony tinkering with consoles so long after their shelf life, unless it is to improve the machine, which is not the case here.

At the moment of publishing, there has been no comment on Sony from the matter, and given the change is now months old, and given that it clearly did not want to broadcast the change to begin with, we do not expect this to change. If it does though, we will update the story accordingly.

Following a recently posted job opening, Sony Senior Vice President Sadahiko Hayakawa seemed to confirm that more of the company’s games will be offered for platforms beyond PS4 and PS5. That’s not a total surprise based on everything we’ve seen over the last few years. Sony started a slow path towards a multiplatform strategy by releasing its games on PC a few years ago, before eventually bringing PlayStation brands to Nintendo Switch. The last barrier seemed to fall when the company announced a version of Helldivers 2 for Xbox Series X|S. We don’t know which PlayStation games will come to other platforms next, but there is one candidate that makes the most sense, and that’s Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Released on PS4 in 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man was a huge deal upon release. A critical and commercial success, the Insomniac developed game spawned DLC, a spin-off, and a numbered sequel. On top of all that, it also created a distinct take on the Marvel Universe that the developers plan on building upon in the future; not only is there a third Marvel’s Spider-Man game in the works, but Insomniac is also currently developing Marvel’s Wolverine. Right now, there is a version of the Marvel Universe that is exclusively accessible on PlayStation and PC.

marvels-spider-man.jpg

In the years since Marvel’s Spider-Man was released, both Marvel and Sony have found ways to grow out that universe. Not only has the Insomniac take on Spider-Man shown up in Sony’s Spider-Verse films, but we’ve even seen the game’s take on Peter Parker adapted to the Marvel comics, where he’s played a key role in some crossover events. Perhaps the smartest move the companies made was giving Insomniac’s Spider-Man his own unique costume design with that trademark white spider. A lot of fans didn’t like it at first, but now it appears all over clothing and other merchandise, and it’s even obtainable in Marvel Rivals. It’s impossible to overstate what a big deal this game has been for both PlayStation and Marvel over the last seven years.

For all of those reasons, Marvel’s Spider-Man would be a really smart game for PlayStation to bring to Xbox, and possibly Nintendo Switch 2 as well. Spider-Man is one of the biggest superheroes on the planet, and bringing his game to other platforms simply makes sense from a marketing standpoint. Batman’s Arkham games weren’t exclusive to other platforms, and Spider-Man’s games shouldn’t be exclusive either. These are iconic characters beloved by people around the world. While Spider-Man fans can see him show up in lots of games outside of Insomniac’s series, PlayStation has the exclusive rights to create solo games based on the character. That means if you’re an Xbox owner who loves Spider-Man, you have to stick to ensemble games like Marvel’s Midnight Suns and the upcoming Marvel Cosmic Invasion. You can’t even play old Spider-Man games released by Activision on Xbox or Nintendo systems, likely as a result of the deal between Marvel and Sony.

From Sony’s perspective, Spider-Man would be a more logical choice to bring to other platforms before any other game. The company could bring over titles like Days Gone instead, but that’s just not going to have the same widespread appeal; the pool of Xbox players that care about Deacon St. John coming to the platform is going to be a lot smaller than the number that are excited about the prospect of seeing Peter Parker. One is a cultural icon that has been around for more than 60 years, and the other is unlikely to ever appear in another video game again (sorry Days Gone fans, but it’s the truth). That’s not to say PlayStation shouldn’t also port over games beyond Spider-Man, but it’s the one that makes the most sense from an investment standpoint.

That brings us to the financial aspect of all this: the Spider-Man games cost a lot of money to develop. Development costs on AAA games have ballooned over the last decade, making it harder and harder for companies to justify keeping games walled off as exclusives. The Spider-Man games have been great sellers for Sony, but it’s safe to assume those profits are getting split with Marvel. Sony is probably making more than enough money to justify developing additional Spider-Man video games, but bringing them to additional platforms means a better chance at recouping costs.

Time will tell if PlayStation sees the financial and logical incentives to bring Marvel’s Spider-Man to other platforms. On top of everything else, it’s a good game, and it could give Sony a reason to bring over Insomniac’s follow-ups. That’s a lot of potential revenue, and there’s good reason for Marvel to push for it happening, just as the MLB once pushed to get The Show ported to Nintendo and Xbox platforms. There are other PlayStation games that also make sense to bring to multiple platforms (The Last of Us for sure), but it’s long past time that players on Xbox and Switch 2 got a chance to swing as Spidey.

PlayStation appears to be teasing that it’s moving away from its console exclusive formula. For years, exclusive games have defined consoles. If you’re a shooter fan, you would probably go to Xbox for Gears of War and Halo. If you’re a fan of cinematic story games, you go to PlayStation. If you like really creative and light hearted adventure games, Nintendo is likely your platform of choosing. However, the barriers have begin to fall in recent years. Xbox and PlayStation have been bringing their games to PC for years and now, Xbox is bringing games to PlayStation, including heavy hitters like Gears of War.

It’s a sign that the times are changing. Later this month, PlayStation will bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox as well. Some suspected that this was a move made by developer Arrowhead with the support of PlayStation, but it was actually the other way around. PlayStation was the one that decided to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox, likely realizing the amount of demand for the game and seeing how many sales it would leave on the table if it didn’t do this. Now, it seems like more PlayStation games could in fact be coming to Xbox in the future.

PlayStation Is “Moving Away from a Hardware Centric Business Model”

As reported by Genki_JPN on Twitter, Sony Senior Vice President Sadahiko Hayakawa seemed to indicate during an earnings call that they are trying to move away from locking everything behind hardware. Instead, they’re focusing on developing engagement and profitability, seemingly suggesting that they are bringing PlayStation games to new platforms.

“In the gaming business, we are moving away from a hardware centric business model more to a platform business that expands the community and increases engagement,” said Sadahiko Hayakawa. He went on to note that Sony is transitioning to becoming an entertainment creation company to help with sustainability and profitability.

This all seems to sound like Xbox’s own strategy which has begun pushing games to other platforms for growth. Forza Horizon 5 is one of the best selling PS5 games this year, so clearly it’s working in their favor. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Gears of War also top the charts for PS5 as well and Halo will be a gamechanger when it inevitably comes.

The question is whether or not PlayStation will go as hard as Xbox has or if it will drip feed older games like Marvel’s Spider-Man or the Uncharted collection instead of releasing more recent games. This plan could also see PlayStation leaning harder on PC as a platform, shortening the gap between PC and PS5 releases if not eliminating that gap entirely. Only time will tell, but all of this news comes as a big surprise amidst all of the recent PS6 rumors which indicate Sony is still investing heavily into new hardware.

What do you think of this strategy? Let me know in the comments below.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced plans to shift away from Xbox console-exclusive games moving forward. By contrast, several upcoming titles are confirmed or expected to be exclusive to PS5 at launch. This can be frustrating for gamers who are bought into the Xbox ecosystem. Consoles aren’t cheap, and many people have either an Xbox or a PlayStation, but not both. With Xbox putting out fewer console exclusives, fans are no doubt wondering whether Sony will also release more of its big single-player titles for Xbox.

In the past few years, PS5 players have gotten a few big titles as console exclusives. This includes Death Stranding 2, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, among others. With a few big Insomniac titles like Marvel’s Wolverine still in the works, Xbox gamers are no doubt curious whether Sony will ease up on its PS5-only launch practices. Unfortunately, a new report from within the industry suggests it’s not likely.

This new info comes from Millie Amand, a video game industry insider with a mixed track record for reliable intel. Amand does not cite a specific source for this information, but notes that Sony does not factor Xbox into its plans for “premium content.” She goes on to affirm that there aren’t any plans for PS5’s big single-player titles to make their way to Xbox any time soon.

Xbox Players May Keep Missing Out on PS5 Favorites

Amand’s statements could be bad news for Xbox owners when it comes to getting big AAA titles day one. But there are a few caveats here. As Amand notes, live service games seem to be an exception. Sony recently revealed plans to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox, expanding the popular multiplayer game to another console. Similarly, Final Fantasy 16 also made its way to Xbox earlier this year. That sparked many Xbox owners to hope for more console exclusives, like the acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man, coming to the platform.

If this latest intel is accurate, it looks like Sony may bring its multiplayer-focused titles to Xbox, but not single-player-focused AAAs. That would mean upcoming games like the planned Insomniac Marvel titles would likely stay on PS5, and that older titles may not make the move over, either.

It’s also important to keep in mind that there’s a difference between timed console exclusives like Final Fantasy, which isn’t actually owned by Sony, versus games published by the company directly. Timed exclusives tend to eventually become available on other platforms after an agreed-upon period, like what we saw with Final Fantasy Remake Integrade being announced for the Xbox Series X|S.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Sony plans to keep its biggest AAA titles on its own console, at least for the time being. When it comes to multiplayer and live service games, however, it seems like Xbox users may not be out of luck. As Sony announces more upcoming first-party titles, we should have a better sense of how accurate this report really is for the future of PS5 console exclusives coming to Xbox.

Do you have both an Xbox and PlayStation console, or just one? What are your thoughts on console exclusives? Let us know in the comments below!

One of the biggest PS5 games releasing in August 2025, which is actually set to release tomorrow on August 8, has some serious PS5 Pro “enhancements” that will be available the moment the PS5 game releases onto the PlayStation Store and PSN. For those that don’t know, what it means when a PS5 Pro game is “enhanced” is that the developer took extra time and development resources to specifically make use of the extra power the PS5 Pro offers in the service of adding extra features and/or enhancement to the experience.

Naturally, the PS5 Pro runs any given PS5 game better automatically, but a “PS5 Pro enhanced” game is supposed to have more tailored improvements. Unfortunately, as PS5 Pro owners will know, sometimes — though rarely — a game will actually run worse on PS5 Pro due to PSSR complications, but Sony is working on improving this. In the meantime, PS5 Pro users will hope tomorrow’s release of Mafia: The Old Country is not one of these rare examples, especially because it appears developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K Games have gone the extra mile to support the premium Sony machine.

When Mafia: The Old Country releases tomorrow, August 8, it will suport Variable Refresh Rate on PS5 Pro, as well as have support for 120hz displays. Meanwhile, the aforementioned duo have also promised higher dynamic resolution in not just “Quality” mode, but “Performance” mode as well. Assuming all of this comes together nicely, the PS5 Pro version of Mafia: The Old Country will be noticeably better compared to the PS5 version.

As for the game in question, for those unfamiliar with Mafia: The Old Country, it is an action-adventure game that will serve as both the fourth mainline Mafia game, but also a prequel to the first game in the series.

Notably, when Mafia: The Old Country releases on PS5 and PS5 Pro — as well as other platforms — on August 8 it will only cost $49.99, a humble price point considering the AAA productions involved.

“Uncover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily,” reads an official elevator pitch of the 2K game. “Fight to survive as Enzo Favara and prove your worth to the Family in this immersive third-person action-adventure set during a dangerous, unforgiving era.”

LittleBigPlanet and its sequels were regarded as some of the best platformers around. Fans have been desperate for a new game in the original series after Sack Boy: A Big Adventure, but Astro Bot seems to have replaced the series for Sony’s flagship platformer adventure. To add fuel to this fire, Media Molecule, the original team behind LittleBigPlanet, has made an announcement that practically seals the series’ fate.

David Smith, the founder of Media Molecule and one of the original creators of Sack Boy and LittleBigPlanet, is stepping down as Gameplay Director for Media Molecule to follow his own creative projects. This appears to be the final nail in the coffin for the LittleBigPlanet series, as it is hard to imagine it coming back without one of its creators.

Fans expressed their sorrow for Sack Boy following this announcement. Sack Boy and LittleBigPlanet were Sony’s mascots for quite some time, but ultimately, the adorable platformer has seemingly been replaced by Astro Bot. Astro Bot won numerous awards and proved to be one of the best 3D platformers ever made, so it is easy to see why Sony wants to focus more on Team Asobi’s Astro Bot.

After Smith’s announcement, fans also expressed their support for the creator and can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. Smith did not provide many details on his future plans, but did tease that he may return to Media Molecule to assist on projects. With more and more of the old guard leaving, however, there is speculation this could signal a new era for the UK studio, and a new era that does not include LittleBigPlanet.

Media Molecule has teased a new project for PlayStation 5 but did not reveal much. With this latest announcement, it’s hard to imagine this game will be related to Sack Boy or LittleBigPlanet and will likely be something new. This announcement came in 2023 after Media Molecule ended support for Dreams, so David Smith likely had some input on the game, and fans may see some of that LittleBigPlanet charm.

A classic PS2 and original Xbox game, and more specifically, a third-person action-adventure game from 2006, is available for just $1, thanks to a new and limited time 86 percent discount that is live until August 19. For those who weren’t around back in 2006 or who were not playing video games 19 years ago or who simply don’t remember the year, it had some great games. There were games like Gears of War, Bully, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Saints Row, Prey, Okami, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, New Super Mario Bros, Resistance: Fall of Man, Company of Heroes, Guitar Hero II, Final Fantasy XII, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Call of Duty 3, Need for Speed: Carbon, and many more. It wasn’t a landmark year for gaming, but it was certainly a great year.

2006 was also when many great franchises got their start, as you can see from the list above. That said, the list above is not even exhaustive. To this end, another series that got its start 19 years ago, and which remains active to this day, though not incredibly active, is Just Cause from Avalanche Studios. In the present, Square Enix now publishes the series, but back then it was Eidos Interactive.

As the current IP holder, it is Square Enix who has made the original Just Cause only $0.97 until August 19. Naturally, it has not made this deal available on PS2 or the original Xbox version, but the PC version available on Steam.

When Just Cause released back in 2006, it actually didn’t overly impress critics. You’d assume it was well-received considering it spawned a successful, multiple game franchise, but its Metacritic score range is high 60s to mid 70s. That said, the aforementioned duo gave the IP another try in 2010, with the release of Just Cause 2, which was well received and which cemented the series.

“Your world…Your rules! In Just Cause, you are a Latin field operative and specialist in regime change backed by top secret US government agency who will overthrow the corrupt government of San Esperito,” reads an official description of the 2006 PS2 and Xbox game for those unfamiliar with it. “The rogue South American state is suspected of stockpiling Weapons of Mass Destruction, and it’s your mission to negate the threat this poses to world peace. It could be to your advantage that the tropical paradise is about to implode as various factions vie for power – it just needs a gentle nudge in the right direction.”

Those that decide to take advantage of this deal should expect an action-adventure game that can be beat in about eight, nine, or ten hours. However, side content will take the journey closer to 20 hours. And then completionists will want to add another 10 onto this.

It appears that PlayStation is exploring bringing games to Xbox. There has been no shortage of speculation over the last year over games dropping exclusivity and coming to new platforms. Xbox has been the biggest proponent of this and extremely successful in its pursuits. Forza Horizon 5 is one of the best selling games on PlayStation 5 this year and it wouldn’t be shocking if Gears of War Reloaded joins those ranks when it releases for PS5 this month. Xbox is clearly comfortable in making more games available on other platforms, but many have wondered if PlayStation will copy this strategy. It lightly dabbled with LEGO Horizon Adventures on Nintendo Switch, but that’s small potatoes by comparison.

However, there is a pretty big PlayStation game coming to Xbox later this month. Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox in just a matter of weeks and will likely be one of the biggest releases on the console this month. The game is massively popular on PlayStation and PC, but Xbox fans have had to sit out. It seemed like the perfect game for Xbox players for the longest time, but no one expected PlayStation to give up one of their biggest games to a different platform. However, it’s happening.

PlayStation Made the Call to Bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox

Many suspected developer Arrowhead was behind the decision, since they aren’t owned by PlayStation. However, PlayStation does own the Helldivers IP, so they have final say on where it goes. With that said, the CEO of Arrowhead, Shams Jorjani, noted to a fan on Discord (via Windows Central) that it was all PlayStation’s idea to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox. “It was all PlayStation,” said Jorjani. “Send them your thanks! We were all in support of course.” He even went on to note that he thinks it’s the “coolest thing” that PlayStation has done to date.

This certainly seems to indicate that PlayStation is at least exploring the idea of bringing games to Xbox. Helldivers 2 is a great test as it will show if Xbox fans really want to spend the money to play PlayStation games on their console. While it’s hard to imagine something like The Last of Us or God of War making the leap to Xbox, maybe something much older that isn’t as active like Uncharted could be a possibility. Perhaps Marvel will nudge PlayStation to bring Spider-Man to Xbox even. Either way, it’s all brand new territory for the industry.

With that said, this likely isn’t being done haphazardly by PlayStation. It feels like a calculated move that could have big implications for the future. PlayStation even had a job listing recently that indicated they are making a larger effort to bring games to new platforms, including Xbox. Only time will tell where this is all going, but it’s pretty exciting times for gamers.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls Team Iron Man

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls isn’t set to be released until next year, but it seems the game’s developers have plans to support it for a very long time after. Speaking at the fighting game tournament Evo (via Push Square), producer Takeshi Yamanaka said that “for the next 10 years, we plan to keep making this game the best experience ever.” That’s a pretty ambitious plan for any game, especially in the current video game industry. But hopefully it means that Arc System Works already has some ambitious ideas beyond the game’s initial launch.

Naturally, that comment from Yamanaka has led to a lot of interesting discussion online. The producer is not the first video game developer to make that kind of lofty promise, to the point that it feels more foreboding than promising. Often when developers over promise on a project like this, it becomes an interesting footnote on a Wikipedia page, rather than something that actually comes to pass. There are fighting games that have proven to be endearing to the point that they’re still played at events like Evo after more than a decade, but actually getting a steady stream of content over that long a period seems hard to imagine.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls

That having been said, the idea of a Marvel fighting game lasting for 10 years is pretty exciting. Marvel has an incredibly large number of characters, from fan favorites to deeper cuts. If Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls does manage to attract a passionate audience, it’s entirely feasible that Arc System Works could find ways to bring in new characters for many years to come. Heck, you could probably get 10 years worth of content by just adding X-Men characters at a steady pace, and that’s not even touching on all of the other franchises that will be represented in Marvel Tokon.

We’ll probably have a better idea of Marvel Tokon‘s chances of finding an audience following next month’s PS5 beta. That beta will give PlayStation users a chance to see how the game is shaping up ahead of its launch next year. If reception is positive, that could be a good sign of things to come. If the opposite proves to be the case, the developers might need to let the game cook a little bit longer.

Anyone interested in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls really should not pin their hopes on the game seeing substantial support for that long. The reality is, we’ve all seen too many ambitious games like Concord crash and burn shortly after launch. If Arc System Works somehow does manage to keep players invested in Marvel Tokon for the long haul, it will be a wonderful surprise. However, people shouldn’t invest in games simply because of overpromises about what the future might hold.

One of the newest free games that’s set to join PlayStation Plus this week should save users more money than normal. Generally speaking, the past few months of PS Plus have been disappointing in the eyes of many subscribers. Games like NBA 2K25, Diablo 4, and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, while popular, have been out for a long enough period of time to have been drastically discounted on the PlayStation Store at one time or another before having ever been made available for free. Luckily, for those looking to get the most bang for their buck with PS Plus, a new addition hitting the service soon will provide some pretty fantastic savings.

As of this week on August 5th, PlayStation will be adding Lies of P, DayZ, and My Hero One’s Justice 2 as the monthly free games. DayZ and My Hero One’s Justice 2 are both popular games in their own right that should give subscribers plenty to play, especially on the multiplayer front. However, it’s Lies of P that is far and away the biggest winner of August, and it’s not just because it’s the most acclaimed game of the three.

The reason that Lies of P is a pretty major addition to PS Plus is because the game rarely ever goes on sale. Despite having been out for almost two years at this point, physical copies of Lies of P on PS5 continue to sell for about $45 on average. On the digital front, that price doesn’t get much better as the lowest that Lies of P has ever been marked down is to $30 on the PS Store. Even then, that $30 sale for Lies of P is one that only happened for the first time a little more than a month ago. Prior to that, previous sales were more in line with $40.

In some sense, this isn’t all that surprising as quality Soulslike games rarely see their values plummet to the $10-$20 price range. Titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and Demon’s Souls still regularly sell for $30-$40+ many years after having been released. Lies of P is no different in this regard, which makes its arrival on PS Plus a welcome one for those who have been interested in checking it out.

Lies of P

Lies of P is a thrilling Soulslike that takes the story of Pinocchio, turns it on its head, and sets it against the darkly elegant backdrop of the Belle Epoque. You are a puppet created by Geppetto who’s caught in a web of lies with unimaginable monsters and untrustworthy figures standing between you and the events that have befallen the world of Lies of P.

You are awakened by a mysterious voice that guides you through the plagued city of Krat – a once lively place that has been poisoned by madness and bloodlust. In our Soulslike, you must adapt yourself and your weapons to face untold horrors, untangle the unfathomable secrets of the city’s elites and choose whether to confront predicaments with the truth or weave lies to overcome them on the journey to find yourself.

Confront the people who manipulate the strings of treachery that doomed Krat.”

The PS6 may not be as far away as you might think, according to a new report. Console generations have gotten weirder and weirder as time has gone on. While it was widely accepted for a long time that you’d need the latest hardware to play new games, that’s not really as accepted anymore. The PS4 still gets major titles like Call of Duty, but games like Battlefield 6 appear to have bucked this trend in favor of new technology. For many, it feels like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S generation hasn’t even really properly kicked off yet. GTA 6 may feel like the game that allows us to feel like the current gen has arrived, but it may also be the swan song of the generation.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S both turn five this November. For a typical console generation, that means we are well over the halfway point. The last two console generations both lasted about seven to eight years before a new console was releases. Of course, this generation had a bumpy start due to COVID causing supply issues and making it so that they weren’t as widely adopted machines until around 2022. That meant a sort of delayed start to the generation in a sense.

However, it seems like the end of the generation is in sight for console manufacturers. Xbox has already started talking about its next console and PlayStation has also spoken about the PS6 being in the works. With that said, many are wondering when we can expect it. A new report from Moore’s Law Is Dead (via Kotaku) claims that the PS6 is coming by fall 2027 or early 2028 alongside the long-rumored PS6 handheld. The information comes from an old AMD document reviewed by the YouTuber. Typically, PlayStation has launched new consoles in the fall around November and the documentation reviewed by Moore’s Law Is Dead claims Sony is expecting to manufacture the console in early – mid 2027, which would allow them to build up supply for a holiday launch.

Although this information comes from a dated AMD presentation, the YouTuber noted that a source close to Sony said that the gaming company tries to stick close to the details in these kinds of documents. This would indicate that we only have about two years left before the start of the next generation, despite a general feeling that games are still leaning on last-gen hardware. Some feel like there’s no reason to even make a PS6 right now since we are still seeing the potential of the PS5.

The YouTuber noted that the power of the PS6 looks to be only a marginal leap from the PS5 Pro, likely in order to keep costs down. Sony will want to keep the price point for the PS6 in that $500 range in order to remain affordable to players, but it remains to be seen how much of a leap there will actually be.

PlayStation Plus users have roughly 48 hours to get an Xbox game for free. And this applies to all PlayStation Plus subscribers across all three tiers of the Sony subscription service: PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium. Once claimed, the PlayStation Plus game is free to keep perpetually as long as you maintain an active subscription. If your PS Plus subscription lapses though you will lose access to the free download until you subscribe back up.

All of this actually applies to three games in total, all of which make up the July 2025 PlayStation Plus free games lineup, which is set to expire on August 5 and be replaced with a new batch of free games. Before this though, PS Plus subscribers have 48 hours to grab the following games for free: Diablo 4, The King of Fighters XV, and the criminally underrated Jusant. The Xbox game of this bunch is obviously Diablo 4, which is an Activision-Blizzard game, and Activision-Blizzard is owned by Xbox.

While Jusant is a great little title that should not be overlooked by PS Plus subscribers and The King of Fighters XV a decent pick up for fighting game fans, Diablo 4 is no doubt the highlight of these these three games, and the one PS Plus subscribers will want to make sure they have redeemed before the deadline. Not only is it the biggest and most notable of these games, but it is likely to be supported for many years to come.

The action-RPG was released by Blizzard in 2023, and as the name suggests, it is the fourth mainline installment in the series. Overall though, it is the seventh installment in the series if you count spin-offs.

Diablo 4 boasts a Metacritic score range of 86 to 91, with said scores varying platform to platform. That said, it is often left out of the conversation for best games of 2023. Further, it seems to have failed to resonate as greatly as its predecessor Diablo 3, especially in terms of staying power.

Since its original release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X in 2023, it has been added to with the Vessel of Hatred expansion, which released in October 2024 to a mixed reception. Meanwhile, as of last month, the game’s ninth season, Sins of the Horadrim, is live.

Diablo 4 is available on both PS4 and PS5 — including PS4 Pro and PS5 Pro — so this limited time PS Plus offer is available to all subscribers across the two generations of Sony consoles.

A new Assassin’s Creed game has seemingly been leaked by PlayStation, though right now it is unclear if it is the rumored next mainline installment, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, Assassin’s Creed Code Invictus, or one of the remakes. Whatever the case, the fact a new Assassin’s Creed game is coming is not that notable — because of course — but what is notable is the leak actually suggests it will be out soon. As for the source of the new leak, it is actually PSN itself.

Over on social media platform X, PlayStation Game Size relies word of a new update to the backend of PSN that seemingly hints at a new Assassin’s Creed game. Unfortunately, while this indicates something is on the horizon due to the fact it would not be on the backend of PSN if it was not, it doesn’t actually divulge any details on what the game is. What can be seemingly ruled out is Assassin’s Creed Shadows DLC because what has been uploaded does not follow the pattern of previous Assassin’s Creed DLC releases.

According to previous reports, Ubisoft is supposedly planning to release Assassin’s Creed Codename Invictus sometime this year. This game has previously been described as a smaller, more experimental multiplayer game. Given that it was said, previously, to be slated for a 2025 release, this is the most likely candidate at the moment, despite Ubisoft never officially saying anything about the rumored game.

Other possibilities include this being a remake. Ubisoft has confirmed, itself, that it is working on more than one Assassin’s Creed remake. Based on previous reporting, it is expected the first of these remakes will be a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. That said, this isn’t, according to previous reporting, slated to release in 2025. And the same thing goes for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, the next mainline installment. Previous reporting has suggested it is nowhere near 2025 ready.

Unfortunately, right now all we have is speculation. What is seemingly clear is that something new from Assassin’s Creed is releasing soon, presumably before the end of the year, and it is not Assassin’s Creed Shadows DLC, though that is on the way.

At the moment of publishing, Ubisoft has not commented on this leak and the speculation it has created. We do not expect this to change for a variety of reasons, but if it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly.

A PS4 exclusive game, which was notably also a PS4 launch game, will cease to exist at the end of this month. The PS4 game in question has actually been delisted from the PlayStation Store and discontinued since 2024, however, it has remained playable. This is going to change on August 31, 2025 though, forever sunsetting the 12-year-old PS4 console exclusive.

In this case, PS4 console exclusive refers to the fact that the only console the game is available on is PS4. It is also available on PC, but this is obviously not a console. Not only did the PS4 launch game never come to Nintendo or Xbox plaforms, but it never came to PS5 either. As for the game in question it is Blacklight: Retribution, which actually debuted in 2012, one year before the PS4, but only on PC.

The free-to-play first-person shooter was originally made by Zombie Studios, who ran the game until 2015, which is when the Seattle-based studio closed down. After this, Hardsuit Labs took over the game, the studio perhaps best known for being pulled off the development of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 after years of troubled development.

Upon release on the PC, Blacklight: Retribution garnered a solid 75 on Metacritic, but the PS4 version did not do as well only earning a 58 a year later. It never really caught on though, hence why the PC version was shut down in 2019, and then PS4 version discontinued in 2024. That said, it has remained playable on PS4, and has enough active players to support matchmaking. In other words, there will be some impacted by this new development.

“Hello Agents, on August 31st the backend services that Blacklight: Retribution depends on will be shutdown for the final time,” says the game’s developer. “Unfortunately, this is a necessary change as we have run out of options to support hosting of Blacklight’s backend services.”

Unfortunately, there is no way to download Blacklight: Retribution in 2025, so those who would like to play one final goodbye game this month have to have the game in their library already.

In the era of digital games, servers, and licensing, it is becoming increasingly common for games to be lost to time. Given the PS4 exclusivity involved here, and the fact it was a notable launch game, makes this one of the bigger examples of this growing trend in 2025.

The PlayStation Plus Essential game lineup for August 2025 has more PS4 games than native PS5 games, although all are playable on PS5. These last-gen offerings won’t be around for long on PlayStation Plus, given the announcement that the service would have a stronger focus on PS5 games starting in January 2026. Regardless, these three games for August 2025 are Lies of P, DayZ, and My Hero One’s Justice 2.

Here’s what to expect from each as they come to PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers on August 5th. All three will be available to add to your library until September 1st.

1) Lies of P

Lies of P is the headliner in August and deserves the top slot. This acclaimed 2023 Soulslike from relatively new developer Round8 Studio was released to great reviews, earning an average score of 82.

Lies of P takes after titles like Bloodborne and is based on Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio novel, but it isn’t just a patchwork of other franchises. Instead, this RPG excels because of its ability to push forward and put its own spin on its obvious influences. Its parry-heavy combat is exhilarating, more responsive than many of its more methodical peers, and mandates at least some form of mastery. The array of standard enemy types is impressive and they all fit the meticulously detailed world, but its bosses truly show off what this game is capable of. These often multi-stage fights are the climactic showdowns they should be and offer a nigh unbeatable sense of satisfaction once they’re slain. The customizable weapon system and array of special Legion Arm abilities also yield many different ways to play, so combat is as deep as it is rewarding.

While sometimes a little hard to follow, its narrative also doesn’t rely solely on item descriptions and notes. It’s a little more direct and has a ton of its own interesting and well-constructed lore that goes beyond Collodi’s novel and asks grander questions about humanity. Its lack of a voiced protagonist hampers these themes a bit, but its ability to be slightly more straightforward when compared to other Soulslike stories makes its better parts easier to absorb.

Round8 has dropped a few patches over the years that have changed the game somewhat significantly. After making some of the bosses a little easier after launch, the team added a few cosmetic items, as well as crossover gear from Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. This all pales in comparison to the most recent large update, which added two new easier difficulty modes, two boss rush modes, and a handful of quality-of-life features, such as a small ticker in the upper right signifying how much more Ergo players need to level up, being able to level up at any checkpoint, and the ability to cash in Ergo chunks at the level up screen, just to name a few.

This update coincided with the Overture expansion, which will not be included for PlayStation Plus subscribers. This hefty $29.99 DLC features multiple new areas, a prequel story, a handful of completely new weapons, and a sizable serving of boss fights. Overture shows the expertise Round8 accrued in making the base game, as Overture contains some of the best bits of Lies of P.

2) DayZ

DayZ is the longest-running title on this list, as this game came to consoles in 2019 (a few months after its official PC launch). It was panned near its release, earning an average score of 41. However, this score is a bit inaccurate now and doesn’t paint the full picture, because DayZ has seen many, many updates in those years. It still gathers around 50,000 concurrent players at any given time only on Steam. It even hit its all-time concurrent player count on Steam in 2024, 11 years after its early access release.

DayZ is a survival game that drops players on a large landmass and tasks them with, well, surviving. Players are meant to overcome the elements to find loot and resources, which means dealing with the infected as well as real-life human players. People can interact with each other in all sorts of ways, meaning that it isn’t strictly competitive. It’s possible to collaborate with others as well as stab them in the back, which leads to the type of emergent storytelling that has made this genre (and this game in particular) incredibly popular.

DayZ has seen a ton of patches. As such, this means the game has seen hundreds upon hundreds of fixes and content drops, as evidenced by its comically long list of patch notes. However, the console versions of DayZ aren’t as robust as the PC original.

DayZ has a few extra premium DLC packs not included in this PlayStation Plus offering. The Last King of DayZ and Frostline packs both contain ammo, gear, and skins and are $29.99 and $39.99, respectively. The $26.99 Frostline expansion, not to be confused with the cosmetic-heavy Frostline pack, came out in 2024 and is more substantial. It features a new snow-covered biome, Sakhal, and that alone changes how the survival mechanics work since extreme cold makes many tasks that much harder. Frostline was initially controversial, but developer Bohemia Interactive has addressed some complaints — like the lack of lootable places — in subsequent patches.

3) My Hero One’s Justice 2

Image Courtesy of Bandai Namco Entertainment

My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a fighting game based on the hit anime series My Hero Academia. It came out in 2020 to tepid reviews (with some exceptions) and received an average score of 69.

This 3D arena fighter is stacked with fan service and touches on various sections of the show. The bigger roster (the base version has 41 characters) and anemic story mode give users a playable version of said show, but it’s unlikely to have much novelty outside of that. The basic arcade mode and grueling mission mode aren’t much better, either. It’s more of a party-based fighter (with an occasionally wonky camera) that doesn’t have as much depth as other more traditional fighting games, meaning there’s not much to mine after learning a character’s basic set of normal attacks, counters, and unblockables. Its environmental destruction and flashy super animations give fights a decent amount of spectacle, though.

My Hero One’s Justice 2 saw some support after launch. It received a photo mode, an English dub, Intruder events with hard CPU fighters that pop up after some online matches, and balance changes. It also received plenty of paid DLC, too, which included 10 new fighters and eight costume packs. There are two $19.99 season passes, but those only contain the fighters and different item packs that are locked to the season pass.

If the year ended tomorrow, the Game of the Year conversation would include the likes of Death Stranding 2, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Split Fiction, Blue Prince, and Donkey Kong Bananza. Then right below this are a collection of games just barely outside this conversation. This second tier of 2025 games includes titles like Mario Kart World, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Deltarune, and perhaps Monster Hunter Wilds, though the Capcom game has proven far more divisive than something like its high Metacritic score suggests.

Pretty much, you can’t get go wrong with any of these games, but only one of them just got its first discount on the PlayStation Store, and that is DOOM: The Dark Ages from id Software, Bethesda, and Xbox. For those that don’t know, this new Bethesda game was released back on May 15 as the sequel to 2016’s DOOM reboot, DOOM, and its follow-up, 2020’s DOOM Eternal.

Upon release, DOOM: The Dark Ages earned an 85 on Metacritic, however, it seemingly sold lightly. General consumers who have checked it out have seemingly enjoyed it though. On Steam, the first-person shooter has an 86% approval rating. On the PlayStation Store, meanwhile, it has 4.69 stars out of 5.

With a 25 percent discount, DOOM: The Dark Ages now costs $52.49 on the PlayStation Store rather than $69.99, a hefty savings of $17 on a game only a couple months old. That said, this deal is only available for a limited time or, more specifically, until August 14.

“Become the Slayer in a medieval war against hell,” reads the game’s official description on the PlayStation Store. “DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM and DOOM Eternal that tells an epic cinematic story worthy of the DOOM Slayer’s legend. In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.”

Those on PS5 or PS5 Pro who decide to take advantage of this PlayStation Store deal can expect a game that on average takes about 14 to 20 hours to beat, with variance coming down to how much side content is engaged. Completionists, meanwhile, will need more like 25 hours with the first-person shooter.

Nintendo may have just ruined its only chance to break a longtime record held by PlayStation. For almost 20 years, Sony has been able to tout that it has the best-selling video game console of all-time in the PlayStation 2. Over the course of its lifespan, the PS2 sold a whopping 160 million units around the globe, putting it well out of reach of sales numbers for the Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and Xbox 360. And while the PS2 is currently still the king, Nintendo was quickly making a push to surpass the 160 million units milestone with the Switch. Now, following a new decision from the company, it seems unlikely that this achievement will happen.

As of this week, Nintendo revealed that it would be making a shocking decision to increase the price of the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. This move is a baffling one as it comes about well over eight years after the Switch first launched. By this point in the life cycle of most video game consoles, prices tend to fall. Instead, as a result of tariffs levied by the United States on other countries, Nintendo has been forced to bump up the cost of the Switch or risk losing money on sales of the hardware.

This move is one that Nintendo itself clearly didn’t want to make and is instead something that it felt forced to do. For the time being, similar price increases aren’t coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, but Nintendo did note that “adjustments may be necessary in the future.”

nintendo-switch-oled.png

Although the price of the Switch going up is disappointing, most who have wanted to purchase the platform at this point have likely already done so. To date, the Nintendo Switch has sold a little more than 153 million units. Even without a change in value, the Switch was already beginning to see its sales trajectory slow over the past year. With the Switch 2 having just launched in June, this slowdown will only amplify further.

What this price change almost certainly will do, though, is guarantee that the PS2 is going to remain the top-selling console ever. For Nintendo to beat out PlayStation, it would need to sell roughly 7.5 million units of the Switch from this point onward in its life. This feat is one that, while not impossible, now seems quite implausible. Given that the difference between the price of the Switch 1 and the Switch 2 is even closer than it was before, anyone in the market for a Nintendo console will likely just pay a bit more to get the newest version of the hardware. While this could certainly change if the Switch 2 also gets a drastic bump in cost, for now, there’s really no reason for anyone to purchase a brand-new Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED.

playstation-2-ps2.jpg

Perhaps even with a price increase, the Switch will still find a way to sell a couple of million more units in the months and years ahead. If it does, it will end up passing the total sales of the Nintendo DS, which currently sits as the second best-selling video game platform at 154 million units. Even with a bump like that, it still wouldn’t be enough to put it into the number one spot.

For now, those at Sony have to be breathing a sigh of relief. While it previously seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Switch would end up becoming the highest-selling video game console ever, the PS2 now seems poised to retain its title. And with difficult market conditions hindering the performance of the Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2, it looks like the PS2 could end up being the king of the consoles for decades to come.

A PS1 game from 1997 just got a surprise stealth release on the PlayStation Store. Those on the PS1 back in 1997 may nostalgically remember titles like Final Fantasy 7, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Tursimo, Tomb Raider II, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Riven, Mega Man Legends, Colony Wars, Einhander, NFL GameDay 98, Final Fantasy Tactics, and more. It was a hallmark year for gaming. And in year like 1997, lots of PS1 games flew under the radar.

One of these is no doubt Tomba from Whoopee Camp and Sony itself. This action-adventure game didn’t actually come west until 1998, but it debuted in Japan in 1997. And it was received well, as evident by its 84 on Game Rankings. That said, considering some of the pedigree behind it — chiefly Tokuro Fujiwara, who founded the studio after his pioneering work at Capcom — this is not too surprising. That said, it didn’t end up selling very well, though it still managed to pull together enough for a sequel, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, to be greenlit and released in 1999.

Over the years, it developed a status as a cult-classic, and then over two decades later it came to Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC in 2024 with an enhanced re-release. And now, a year later, this re-release has been dropped on the PS4, via the PlayStation Store, out of nowhere. Like the first wave, this new release has been published by Limited Run Games.

“Tomba! returns in Tomba! Special Edition, the ultimate version of the legendary platforming masterpiece,” reads its official PlayStation Store listing. “As the titular Tomba, you leap, bite, and throw your way across stunning 2.5D landscapes on a quest to overcome a deplorable cadre of nefarious pigs. Along the way, you’ll explore ancient relics, discover fascinating characters, unlock thrilling quests, and unearth hidden treasures. It’s a platforming adventure that perfectly fuses linear and nonlinear gameplay styles.”

It is unclear if there are any difference between this new PS4 version and the previously released PS5 version. If there is, they are not detailed. Whatever the case, PS4 and PS4 Pro users can finally buy this game on the PlayStation Store, but it will cost them $19.99.

Sony's FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick for PlayStation

Sony is making a big entry into the fighting game genre with the upcoming FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick. This marks the first official fight stick for PlayStation created by Sony, and I’m all aboard. Fighting games typically cater to two types of audiences, casual and competitive, and I’ve toed the line for years. That said, there are three main reasons, and several smaller ones, why I am completely sold on the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick.

Before diving into what makes the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick so appealing, it has to be said that Sony’s support of the fighting game community is incredible to see. The studio has already partnered with Arc System Works to produce Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, but introducing a fight stick that is appealing to both casual and competitive players can bridge the gap and get more fans into higher-tier play.

The first thing I want to highlight is the FlexStrike Fight Stick’s wireless and wired capabilities. Controllers have long moved toward wireless, and the FlexStrike does so through PS Link. PS Link is a great option that reduces latency, which will appeal to competitive players where every input is crucial. However, it also makes it more accessible for casual players who don’t want to carry long wires around with them. That said, some players in the competitive scene prefer a wired connection no matter what, and the USB-C wired connection satisfies this desire.

Lock Button Ability

FlexStrike’s lock button feature is a game-changer. Anyone who has played on a fight stick or controller has pressed the wrong button and done a misinput. These can often lead to losing a game and even a set. However, the FlexStick’s lock feature prevents you from pressing the wrong button, making every click of its mechanical switch buttons satisfying and bringing you closer to victory.

Toolless Gate Swap

Finally, the FlexStrike Fight Stick comes with Toolless Gate Swap and three different options that change how your inputs function. By default, it comes equipped with a square gate, as these are the most common, especially outside of the United States. However, if desired, players have the option to swap these for octagonal or circular gates and can do so without additional tools.

This allows for customization in an easy manner to appeal to all player preferences. Gates correspond to how your stick moves, directly affecting your inputs. Square gates have become among the most popular due to fewer restrictions, whereas some players have reported that octagonal gates make doing inputs for charge characters more difficult. By including all three, Sony is catering to all audiences in the FGC.

These three things alone make the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick a winner for me, but this isn’t all Sony has jammed into this product. The fighting game community is always changing, and its preference for fight sticks is no exception. Leverless has become a popular option, but traditional arcade fight sticks are still well-favored. This makes Sony’s FlexStrike the perfect beginner fight stick for newcomers while offering great value for veterans.

The size of the FlexStrike is also incredibly appealing. Fight decks are notoriously big, though this has changed in recent years. Sony’s FlexStrike is small enough to be used on a desk, in your lap, and even just held. It adds to this appeal by making the buttons close, even those seen on a regular PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller. By going this route, the FlexStrike can theoretically be used for fighting games and other genres.

Despite its small size, it is built smartly to utilize all its compact space. The additional gates and PS Link adapter are all stored on the back of the device. Likewise, the USB-C wire, which is used for connecting to PS5 or PC and likely for charging the controller’s battery, can be stored in the included sling carry case along with the controller itself. This makes traveling with the FlexStrike easy for those who play at tournaments or friends’ houses.

Sony has not revealed an official release date, but it did confirm that the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick is planned to release in 2026. No price has been revealed either, but fans can sign up for updates on Sony’s official site. The FGC will want to keep an eye on this. Even casual players who are looking to enhance their game can benefit from the FlexStrike.

There has never been a better age for fighting games. Street Fighter 6 paved the way with its Modern controls, but Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves and the upcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are also great ways to get into the genre. As a casual player who has always wanted to take things to the next level, the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick will likely be what pushes me toward the competitive scene once and for all.

FromSoftware, the developer behind notoriously difficult titles such as Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring, has built a reputation on its punishing yet rewarding gameplay. These tiles always challenge players to learn through failure to overcome impossible odds. It is the nature of the beast for boss fights to be designed to push players to their limits, but they are also expected to be fair. Clear warning signs and obvious indicators are important aspects of a fair boss encounter. But when a boss feels overpowered in a way that seems unnatural, even long-time fans are quick to speak up. That was the case with a particularly frustrating bug involving a familiar boss foe in Elden Ring Nightreign.

The Draconic Tree Sentinel, a returning boss from the base Elden Ring game, became the source of widespread frustration due to one of its attacks. This supposed bug caused the Sentinel’s lightning-based bolt attacks to hit players from absurd distances at extreme speeds, sometimes across entirely different points of interest. In many cases, the boss could strike players who weren’t even in combat or visible range, leading to one-shot kills from out of nowhere. Always a fun time.

The situation sparked numerous complaints across the Elden Ring Nightreign community. One player described being wiped by the boss along with their group, only to get killed again by a lightning bolt while climbing stairs far from the boss arena. They emphasized that the Sentinel was not in line of sight, and there was no visual cue that an attack was incoming. Others echoed similar experiences, pointing out that even well-geared characters with health buffs were being instantly killed without a fair chance to respond.

Some players noted that since the last update, the enemy aggro range across certain areas had increased, making areas like the castle zone near the boss even harder to navigate. Being chased by mobs only to be struck down by a crimson lightning from an unseen boss made for an understandably frustrating experience that didn’t align with FromSoftware’s usual design standards.

Thankfully, Patch 1.02 has now fixed the issue. The Nightreign update addresses the bug that caused the Draconic Tree Sentinel’s lightning attacks to strike players from extreme distances. With this correction, the boss’s bolt ability should now function properly, only activating when players are actually within range and line of sight. FromSoftware didn’t provide deep technical details on the matter, but confirmation in the patch notes reveals that the fix has gone through and is live.

While FromSoftware games are known for their brutal difficulty, they are also respected for their consistency. Careful and extremely precise encounter design is one of the hallmark features of a FromSoftware game, so this standout issue clearly did not align with the studio’s vision. FromSoftware rarely shies away from letting players struggle, but it draws the line when gameplay becomes outright broken. Fixing the Draconic Tree Sentinel restores the kind of challenge that fans of the genre expect. It’s still a difficult boss, as it was in Elden Ring, but now it plays by the established rules, even if the player has to learn what those rules are.

For players continuing their struggles in Elden Ring Nightreign, this fix is a great quality-of-life improvement and shows that FromSoftware is willing to adjust the balance when needed. The road ahead may still be paved with hardships, but at least one of the most unfair ones has been corrected.

A new God of War free release has surprised PlayStation fans across PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, and PS5 Pro. That said, the new freebie for God of War fans is set to be locked behind a PlayStation Plus subscription. Any tier of the Sony subscription service — PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, or PS Plus Premium — is sufficient, but a subscription is indeed needed. Whether the subscription is made before or after the release is not relevant though. Further, the subscription does not need to be retained after the freebie is claimed.

Those looking for a new God of War game will have to keep looking, unfortunately. There have been rumors of various new God of War releases, including remastered collections, the next mainline God of War game, and even a metrodvania spin-off. Meanwhile, there is even a new TV show in the works. And now there are new freebies that will be redeemable come August 5 and beyond.

More specifically, as part of ongoing, official celebrations of the 15-year anniversary of PlayStation Plus, Sony is making a set of PSN avatars free to all PS4 and PS5 users with an active PS Plus subscription. How many of these avatars in the new, free set will be God of War, remains to be seen. Further, it appears the entire set will be limited to God of War Ragnarok. In other words, those hoping for classic God of War avatars are going to be left yearning.

It will be interesting to see what PlayStation franchises specifically are included. The only ones confirmed so far are God of War and Twisted Metal. Whether this indicative of what is on the horizon or not, remains to be seen, but it is certainly interesting. While Twisted Metal has the new TV show for synergy, God of War currently doesn’t have anything, but maybe that will change soon. Or it may not. After all, some of the other games included — like Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy — have next to nothing going on, and sequels aren’t close. That said, these are third-party deals, where Sony can choose anything from its PlayStation catalog, and it has chosen God of War and Twisted Metal.

A series from yesteryear that many will remember playing on the PS2 in the mid 2000s is returning with a new game, and this new game is releasing on October 30. Where previous games were PS2 exclusives, or at least when they first launched, this new installment is going to be multi-platform. More specifically, it will be available via Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. There is currently no word of a Nintendo Switch 2 version, however, even if a Nintendo Switch 2 version does not materialize it will obviously be playable on the new Nintendo console via backward compatability.

In the mid 2000s there was an obscure action-adventure series from Etranges Libellules, a French studio whose name you may not recognize, and that is because it operated from 1994 to 2012. In other words, it has been closed for 13 years. It has not returned, but some of it work lives on.

More specifically, via Microids, a new Asterix & Obelix game is releasing on October 30 via the aforementioned platforms called Asterix & Obelix: Mission Babylon. Part of the broader, Asterix series, Asterix & Obelix in video game format came to be in 2003 with the release of Asterix & Obelix XXL on the PS2. It eventually came to other platforms, but not until the following years, hence why it is associated with the PS2. And the same is true of its 2005 sequel, Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission: Las Vegum, though the follow-up was also on PC at launch.

Now there, have been a couple more limited and/or smaller releases since, but nothing of consequence. To this end, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Babylon is essentially going to serve as a revival of the series for many.

“Our two mustachioed heroes are ready to leave Armorica behind and make their legendary punches echo far beyond their borders,” reads an official description of the game from Microids, for those curious to know more. “A brand-new destination, some Romans in need of discipline, and their indomitable spirit still going strong!

Its official description continues: “Our heroes leave their peaceful Armorica for a crucial mission at the edge of the Parthian Empire, a legendary kingdom under threat from Caesar’s ambitions. Their goal? Save King Monipehni, who has fallen victim to a vile poison brewed by the nefarious sorcerer Bahmbuhzeli. To succeed, Asterix and Obelix must journey through mysterious lands, gather the ingredients for an antidote… and of course, give a good thrashing to some overconfident Roman cohorts.”

There is currently no word of pre-orders nor how much the game will cost when it releases on October 20. If this changes, we will update the story accordingly. When Konami announced Bloober Team’s involvement with the Silent Hill 2 remake, there were major concerns among fans of the series. Silent Hill 2 has long been regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made, and the decision to entrust the remake to the studio responsible for games like The Medium and Blair Witch seemed like a huge gamble. However, those fears were assuaged last year, as the game released to strong critical praise, and record sales for the series. In an interview with PC Gamer, Bloober Team’s Jacek Zieba talked about how the game’s success has changed perception around the studio.

“We are starting to stop feeling like underdogs all the time after Silent Hill,” Zieba told PC Gamer. “The Silent Hill era wasn’t so easy in the eyes of the public. There were a lot of voices: ‘Oh no, Bloober is doing this. They will destroy that.’ It was very tough for the whole company to stick to our guns and put all our heart into that thing, even if most people don’t want it. We proved people wrong, so that’s nice.”

Silent Hill fans could hardly be blamed for their skepticism; it wasn’t just concern over Bloober Team’s handling of the series, but also Konami’s. The publisher had allowed the series to go dormant for several years following the cancellation of Hideo Kojima’s incredibly promising Silent Hills. Fans had been starving for a new game in the franchise ever since, yet Konami was entrusting the remake of a beloved game to a small developer that was responsible for indie horror games that had been released to mixed reception.

Not only did Bloober Team prove itself to Silent Hill fans, it also clearly proved itself to Konami. Just months after the release of the Silent Hill 2 remake, the two companies released a press release talking about the benefits that came from “sharing knowledge and experience,” and how that helped result in a quality experience. That press release teased a new joint project, which was later confirmed to be a remake of the original Silent Hill. Konami and Bloober Team haven’t shown anything yet from the new remake, but there already seems to be a lot less doubt surrounding this project.

In just a year, Silent Hill went from a series largely ignored by Konami, to getting better treatment than any other. The publisher has no less than three Silent Hill games currently in development, including Bloober Team’s new remake. On top of that game, there’s Silent Hill f coming in September (developed by NeoBards), and Silent Hill Townfall (developed by Screen Burn). As of this writing, Townfall does not currently have a release date, but it’s possible we could see the game released sometime in 2026. Hopefully those other teams can find a similar level of success with their Silent Hill games.

Each month, PlayStation Plus subscribers get access to several games as part of their membership. With July wrapping up, Sony has just revealed the games headed for the subscription service in August. And if you thought that the lineup for the 15th anniversary was big, things aren’t slowing down any time soon. August 2025’s new additions to PS Plus include some solid games, making this another exciting month for members.

The PS Plus monthly games lineup for August will include three new games, available for all members. The new titles arrive on August 5th for members at all subscription tiers. If you’ve had your eye on anything from last month’s lineup, you have until August 5th to add the games to your library to keep. Once the titles turn over, prior games will no longer be available. Now, let’s dig into the new games headed our way in August.

Lies of P

The highlight this month is no doubt Pinocchio-inspired Soulslike Lies of P. The game seldom goes on sale for less than $40, so having it up for grabs via PS Plus is a pretty deal. The game will be available for PS5 and PS4. Gamers on both consoles can add it to their libraries this month for free so long as they subscribe to the Essential tier or above for PS Plus.

Day Z

Along with Lies of P, PlayStation Plus is also adding a zombie survival game, Day Z. This multiplayer game lets up to 60 players battle it out to avoid zombies and survive in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s truly hardcore, with no checkpoints or saves. When you die, it really is game over, and you’ll have to start from the beginning. It is available for PS4.

My Hero One’s Justice 2

Combat in arena fighter My Hero One’s Justice 2

Finally, rounding out this month’s slate of new monthly games is My Hero One’s Justice 2. This beloved 3D arena fighter has a highly anticipated follow-up coming out in the form of My Hero Academia All’s Justice. So, this addition is incredibly timely for new and returning My Hero Academia fans looking to experience earlier titles in the franchise. This is another title geared specifically for PS4.

These games will all be available starting on August 5th. Along with the new titles, PS Plus subscribers can also claim a handful of special 15th Anniversary Avatars. New avatars from big games like Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4, and other prior PS Plus games will be available to claim starting on August 5th, as well. These are all free with your PS Plus membership, giving you a chance to customize your in-game look at no additional cost.

Games on this list will be free to claim for PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium. The bonus anniversary avatars are also available for all tiers. This lineup will be replaced when September’s games arrive, so you’ve got about a month to add them to your library.

Will you be adding any of these new August 2025 PS Plus games to your library? Let us know in the comments below!

The God of War TV show has had fans both excited and worried. However, a new update from the project’s showrunner, Ronald D. Moore, shows that the TV series is on track after the previous script was scrapped. Not only this, but it has been confirmed that Cory Barlog, the creative director of Santa Monica Studio, is directly involved with the development of God of War’s TV adaptation.

In an interview with Collider, Moore spoke about the progress of adapting God of War as well as Barlog’s role in shaping the narrative and design. While the TV show will be based on the 2018 God of War, it will not follow it exactly. However, it will mostly follow the story and align with the characters and feel of the game. Moore revealed he had been researching Kratos and the lore of the games to prepare himself during the scriptwriting phase.

Moore also said he has had regular meetings with Barlog, which have aided Moore in crafting the ideas behind each of Season One’s ten episodes. This has given fans hope that even if the show does not directly follow the game, it will do a good job of adapting it into its own entity.

No details for when shooting would begin were revealed, leaving fans speculating whether filming for God of War would happen by 2026 or 2027. There has been no official confirmation of a cast for the TV show at this time, either.

That said, fans do know other talent attached to the project outside of Moore and Barlog. Tania Lotia, known for The Witcher and Invincible, has reportedly joined as a writer to lend her voice to the God of War TV show.

Sony Sues Tencent For Horizon Rip Off https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/sony-sues-tencent-horizon-rip-off-playstation/ https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/sony-sues-tencent-horizon-rip-off-playstation/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 18:21:39 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1435741

Sony is suing Tencent for what they claim is a rip off of Horizon. It’s no secret that a lot of games take inspiration from other titles on the market. Almost every live service game under the sun has borrowed the battle pass model from Fortnite, a lot of games in the 2000s tried to copy Grand Theft Auto’s open-world sandbox gameplay, and Call of Duty inspired a lot of games to emulate its general style and features. However, there’s a big difference between being inspired by something and outright just ripping off another game. Palworld famously took heat from Nintendo after being accused of being a Pokemon knock-off. Pocketpair and Nintendo are still in an ongoing legal battle over this as we speak.

Now, it seems like Sony is going after another company in order to protect one of its biggest franchises. Within the last decade, one of the most popular franchises to come out of PlayStation is Horizon. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has almost regressed back to primitive times while also utilizing futuristic technology. In the Horizon games, players battle robot dinosaurs and traverse lush environments as protagonist Alloy, a young redheaded woman. The first two games have sold millions of copies and paved the way for a VR spin-off and a feature film. Additionally, it’s expected that a multiplayer Horizon game is in the works as well.

It is a lucrative series for PlayStation and that seems to be why Sony is going after Tencent for another game. Per a Reuters report, Sony is suing Tencent for its game Light of Motiram, which Sony claims features identical gameplay, themes, and artistic elements. Sony also cited journalists who pointed out the similarities between the two and went on to claim that Tencent approached Sony about working on a new Horizon game together last year. Sony declined and sometime later, Tencent announced Light of Motiram. Sony claims Tencent’s game is a “slavish clone” of Horizon and believes it could confused buyers. You can view the trailer for the game below.

We’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out, but Tencent’s game does mimic Horizon in many different ways. Even the combat looks very similar and the robot enemies are clearly very close to what is seen in the Horizon series. Whether or not Sony wins this case remains to be seen. Light of Motiram has no release date at the moment, but it is due to release on PC when (or if) it comes out

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Release Date Leaked (and It’s Sooner Than You Think) https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/mortal-kombat-legacy-kollection-release-date-leak-xbox-switch-ps5/ https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/mortal-kombat-legacy-kollection-release-date-leak-xbox-switch-ps5/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 12:54:40 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1435421

Mortal Kombat fans have a pretty big new video game to look forward to this year, but fans have been left waiting for news on an actual release date. During last month’s PlayStation State of Play, Digital Eclipse revealed Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection, but only confirmed that the compilation will be offered at some point in 2025. With the year more than halfway over, the developers have a quickly closing window left to actually provide a date and release the Kollection. The developer has yet to actually make an announcement, but we might have a release date thanks to an accidental leak from Xbox.

According to the Microsoft Store (via @Destiny1031 on X/Twitter), Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection will be released on September 30th (however, it may release on the 29th, depending on the time zone). The listing also offered the size of the game, which comes in at 16 GB. Already, that amount has generated speculation about any contents that have not been announced just yet. After all, the original Mortal Kombat games themselves shouldn’t take up much room. However, it’s impossible to say just how much the game will offer in terms of video documentary content, which could inflate the overall total.

Following the leak, Microsoft has now fixed the store listing, removing the date. It might sound unusual for a leak to come directly from Xbox, but this sort of thing happens quite frequently. The Microsoft Store has not only revealed release dates ahead of time, but store pages have actually revealed full games before their announcement. It is possible that the date isn’t accurate, and it was only there as a placeholder, so fans might want to take this with a grain of salt pending a full announcement. However, given the number of times we’ve seen this sort of leak from the Microsoft Store, we can probably count on this being accurate.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection will feature the earliest games in the franchise, in multiple different forms. Players will be able to access the arcade, console, and even handheld versions of these games, from both the Game Boy and Game Gear. Digital Eclipse has earned a stellar reputation for its compilation games, in large part due to the documentary material they often include. Games like Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection and Tetris Forever have not only brought together older games and made them playable in one place, but they also include lots of behind the scenes material and interviews. From what’s been shown, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection will be no exception.

Following the leak, many fans have been trying to guess when and where Atari and Digital Eclipse will announce the release date for Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. The fighting game tournament Evo starts on August 1st, so there’s a good chance we could see an announcement in just a few days. Hopefully MK fans won’t be kept waiting too much longer!

PS5 Pro Users Surprised With New Very Rare Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/ps5-pro-new-game-rare/ https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/ps5-pro-new-game-rare/#respond Sun, 27 Jul 2025 20:16:38 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1435107

PS5 Pro users have been surprised with a very rare game. When Sony first introduced the PS5 Pro, it promised 8K gaming, something many were immediately skeptical about. And the skepticism is proving to be justified, because there are only four PS5 games that support 8K gaming on the PS5 Pro: Gran Turismo 7, No Man’s Sky, F1 24, and The Touryst. That said, soon it is going to be five games deep.

The new PS5 Pro 8K game in question is a sequel to Pure Pool from VooFoo Studios and Ripstone. Those that recognize this name it is because it has been around for a while. The former PS4 console exclusive hit PS4 and PC back in July of 2014, before coming to Xbox One later that year. Then in 2020, it came to Nintendo Switch.

This year, it is getting a successor called Pure Pool Pro. And fittingly it will be 8K at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro, and upgrade compared to the base PS5 version, which is going to run the game at 4K, 120 FPS. And it is going to achieve the former, natively, aka without using the PS5 Pro’s AI PSSR upscaling. That said, it is worth noting this is what is being promised. The game isn’t out yet, so only time will tell if VooFoo Studios and Ripstone can deliver on this promise. Not a lot of games have been able to hit this level of resolution, but Pure Pool Pro has far less to render than most games, which certainly helps.

As for the release date of Pure Pool Pro, it is currently scheduled to release sometime this year. In other words, there is currently no exact release date. We should presumably get a release date soon as there isn’t a ton of 2025 left unless it is going to be a short run between reveal and release date or even a surprise release.

A couple of classic PS2 and original Xbox games are on sale for just $0.97. Unfortunately, while the games in question were originally PS2 and OG Xbox games, they are not this price on the PlayStation Store nor the Xbox Store, but rather on Steam. That said, there are some other deals for games in the same series available on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store. As for the series in question, it is Legacy of Kain, traditionally from Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it debuted back in 1996 via Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, a PS1 exclusive. This was then followed up with a sequel in 1999 called Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, another PS1 exclusive. Then came Soul Reaver 2, a direct sequel to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. This released in 2001 and was a PS2 exclusive game. Next was Blood Omen 2 in 2002. This is when the series came to Xbox, as a PS2 and OG Xbox release. While it is the fourth game in the series, it is actually a direct sequel to the first game, as the name suggests. Then the series concluded in 2003 with the release of Legacy of Kain: Defiance on PS2 and Xbox. This wrapped the five-game series, however, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered was released by Aspyr for all modern platforms last year. This is also included in the deals.

The most notable deals are specifically for Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain and Legacy of Kain: Defiance, which are discounted 86% on Steam, and thus are on sale for just $0.97. These deals are available until August 9.

Other Legacy of Kain deals include a 40 percent discount on Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. This is the lowest price this game has ever been, but the deal is only available until August 14 and only via the PlayStation Store. And thus it is limited to PS4 and PS5 users. Lastly, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is 35 percent off on both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store until August 1 and July 31, respectively. As a result, it is available for $19.49.

A free PS4 game is available on the PlayStation Store for the next 72 hours, and after this, it will be shut down. In other words, PS4 and PS4 Pro users have three days to download and play the free PS4 game, which has been available on the PlayStation Store since 2018, aka for the last seven years. It is unclear why the PS4 game is being shut down, but it is presumably because it is costing more to maintain the servers and support the game then it makes on the last-gen PlayStation console. Not only are running game servers expensive, but the game has to be maintained to prevent hacking and other security issues. This is also not cheap.

The free PS4 game in question is Armored Warfare, a free-to-play vehicular combat game currently run by Wishlist Games, who took over the game from My.Games and Obsidian Entertainment, the original developers. Wishlist Games also publishes the title. The free-to-play game first debuted back in 2015, but only on PC. Then in 2018, it came to Xbox One and PS4. It never came to Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, nor PS5, but it is playable on all of these machines via backward compatibility.

How many on PS4 are still playing Armored Warfare in 2025, we do not know, but according to the PlayStation Store, many have checked it out over the years. To this end, on the PlayStation Store it has over 57,000 user reviews, which is a ton. Across all of these user reviews, the game’s average score is 3.87 out of 5, which is a solid return.

Those on PS4 or PS5 that decide to check out Armored Warfare on PSN before it is shut down will need PlayStation Plus to play it, according to its PlayStation Store listing. Speaking of the PlayStation Store listing, it is the game’s listing on PSN that has revealed the shutdown. There has not been any formal announcement, but the PlayStation Store listing was simply updated to include the following message: “Attention: the game will be closed on July 30.” Of course, if there are any further developments of any kind, we will update the story accordingly.
