After wringing every last tear from fans through Kuma and Bonney’s backstory over the last few months, One Piece’s Egghead Arc has finally kicked off the second half of its story, setting the stage for the arc’s big climax with the initiation of the dreaded Buster Call. The anime has also marked this shift in the story with a brand new opening theme full of easter eggs and spoilers of what’s to come, including the introduction of One Piece’s biggest enigma, Joyboy.

From finally seeing the Five Elders in action to all the revelations that Vegapunk’s worldwide broadcast has in store, there’s plenty to look forward to in the Egghead Arc for the next few months. Even so, easily the biggest upcoming moment in the arc is the flashback containing Joyboy’s first-ever appearance in the series. While Joyboy has been mentioned multiple times over the course of the series, fans still know frustratingly little about this mysterious figure from the Void Century. Luckily, the Egghead Arc is finally set to change this, not only revealing more about Joyboy but also giving fans their first-ever look at him, albeit in silhouette form. That said, One Piece’s new opening theme may have already revealed Joyboy, but it was so quick that fans may have completely missed it.

One Piece’s New Opening Already Revealed Joyboy

During the title card sequence in One Piece’s new opening theme for the Egghead Arc, a nondescript figure in a straw hat makes an appearance in the background for just a split second. The straw hat is then seen flying across the blue sky to the Iron Giant, who is revealed to be named Emet later in the Egghead Arc. At first glance, the obvious answer seems like this figure in the straw hat must be Luffy. However, the figure in the straw hat does not appear to possess Luffy’s distinct spiky hair. Were it to be this as the only clue, though, the glimpse being that of Joyboy in the new One Piece opening would be dismissed pretty easily.

However, when the opening theme pans across to Emet, he seems to be missing any of the rust and moss that is seen on him in the present day. More importantly, Emet is pictured with both of his horns intact, which is easily the biggest giveaway that this scene in the opening is taken from a flashback, as the Iron Giant has been missing his left horn ever since his introduction on Egghead. All of these pieces of evidence point to the figure in the straw hat in the new opening being Joyboy rather than Luffy, Shanks, or even Roger.

Lastly, the plain blue sky with fluffy white clouds in the background confirms that this scene is indeed adapting Emet’s flashback from Chapter 1122, which reveals Joyboy’s silhouette. Of course, the best part has yet to come as the big reveal in the anime will surely be much more exciting. It will also be interesting to see who ends up being cast to voice Joyboy and what he will end up sounding like in the anime, though until then, One Piece’s Egghead Arc definitely has plenty of thrilling developments in store.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

One Piece Sanji Usopp

One Piece’s highly anticipated Elbaf Arc commences Harald’s backstory right before the big fight against the Holy Knights. The series teased this arc in the Little Garden Arc of the Alabasta Saga, which was over 25 years ago. The island is known for its brave Giant warriors, who value honor and pride over their lives. It was that ideal that made Luffy and Usopp respect Dorry and Brogy in the first place. The duo dreamed of visiting Elbaf ever since. Meeting Dorry and Brogy gave Usopp the motivation to become stronger and honorable like them. It’s been over two decades, and the fanbase believed that it’s finally Usopp’s chance to shine.

As one of the Straw Hat Pirates, Usopp has a massive fanbase, but he doesn’t always get the attention he deserves. One Piece thrives on intense action scenes with characters using Haki and Devil Fruits. That’s not a place for the crew’s sniper, who can’t use Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. He also doesn’t have any Devil Fruit or powerful physical strength to speak of. Unlike Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, Usopp serves a different purpose in the crew, but this often leads him to get overshadowed. Even though the Elbaf Arc commenced a few months ago, there aren’t any signs of Usopp stealing the spotlight from others. On the other hand, it’s more likely for Sanji to get even more development.

One Piece’s Elbaf Arc Might Give Sanji the One Power He Lacks

Although Devil Fruits can significantly boost someone’s offensive or defensive abilities, it isn’t the sole criterion for someone to become powerful. Several top-tier characters, such as Shanks, Roger, Mihawk, Garp, and many others, rely only on Haki. The strongest Straw Hat members, Zoro and Sanji, are also the same, except that the former has one edge over the crew’s cook. Zoro can use Conqueror’s Haki while Sanji has shown no signs of awakening this ability yet. However, this might change in the Elbaf Arc. The introduction of Scopper Gaban, Roger’s left-hand, has been groundbreaking, not only for the story but also for Sanji’s character.

Angry Sanji from One Piece

Just as Luffy parallels Gol D. Roger, Zoro parallels Rayleigh and Sanji with Gaban. Gaban competed with Rayleigh for the spot of the second strongest in the crew. The debate probably never even settled since Gaban insists on calling himself No. 2 of the Roger Pirates. Rivalry aside, Gaban’s powers can’t be scoffed at, and a majority of the reason why he’s so overwhelmingly powerful is because of his Conqueror’s Haki and Future Sight.

There’s also the fact that the Holy Knights seem like immortals because of their regenerative powers. On the surface, it may seem like they don’t have any weakness, but Gaban knows the trick to defeating them, and the only choice is to use Advanced Conqueror’s Haki. Just before Harald’s backstory commenced in the manga, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji were preparing to fight the Holy Knights.

Sanji can have all the power in the world, but it’s useless against the villains if he doesn’t use Conqueror’s. One Piece has always shown Zoro and Sanji neck-in-neck with one another, with Zoro always having a slight advantage. Even so, it doesn’t seem likely that Sanji would go too far without awakening one of the strongest abilities in the world of One Piece.

One Piece Creator May Be Preparing to Reshape Sanji’s Image

One Piece Shakky Roger

According to the latest Chapter 1157, it’s highly evident that the series’ creator, Eiichiro Oda, is also planning to salvage Sanji’s reputation, which has been in the mud because of his gag. He always simps over beautiful women, and someone goes over the top because of that. Sanji’s chivalry and his desire to flirt with every woman he sees are just aspects of his personality, which is why he has always been in the middle of the controversy. Although he has more fans than haters, it’s clear that his gag isn’t well-received by many.

Sanji’s flirtatious behavior wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, but the repetition can cause frustration among readers. To make matters worse, the anime’s slow pacing often makes him appear creepy because those scenes last for longer than necessary. However, in the latest backstory, we see almost all the legendary pirates, including Gol D. Roger, Edward Newgate, and Rocks D. Xebec. With so many legends having “heart-eyes” over Shakuyaku, Sanji’s gag doesn’t seem too out of place now.

Elbaf isn’t simply an arc for showcasing intense battles, but it’s supposed to be a lore-heavy arc. The island of the Giants is directly connected to Nika and has several hidden clues about figuring out the world’s true history. With the Holy Knights’ arrival and Harald’s flashback following the story of Rocks D. Xebec, there’s just not enough time to develop Usopp’s character any further. Although he might have a few moments of fame, it just can’t be compared to the Monster Trio. That’s just how the story has been, especially after the time-skip.

Angry Sanji from One Piece

The One Piece manga is currently in a crucial phase as Harald’s backstory sheds light on the legendary Rocks Pirates. We learn how Rocks D. Xebec became a wanted criminal after killing an Admiral in the holy land of Mariejois during the Reverie. He set sail and gathered several allies by participating in the traditional pirate game, the Davy Back Fight. He later formed a pirate crew that ruled the seas during Roger’s prime era. Not only did Rocks engraved his name in history as one of the most notorious pirates to have ever lived, but even his crew members, including Edward Newgate, Shiki, Kaido, Big Mom, and the others, made their names known far and wide in the New World.

Before the Elbaf Arc, fans barely knew anything about the Rocks Pirates, but now we are finally getting to experience their epic journey. Rocks D. Xebec had a major goal in mind before his historic fight during the God Valley Incident against Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger. However, while the backstory hasn’t mentioned the Straw Hats’ chef in any way, he again got after the top-tiers share a common a similar trait with him.

One Piece’s Heart-Eyes Quirk Doesn’t Only Belong to Sanji

one-piece-sanji.png

Aside from the Rocks Pirates, a certain pirate crew gained a lot of attention around four decades ago. Kuja Pirates, a crew of only female pirates from Amazon Lily, known for their strength and beauty, were treated as idols during the time. Even though the crew was led by Gloriossa, Shakuyaku, her right-hand girl, and the next Pirate Empress was the heartbreaker of all the New World. She had everyone swooning over her; no men and women were immune to her charms.

Roger on the ground as Shakky stands above him as seen in chapter 1156 of One Piece

Not to mention that the Roger Pirates even picked fights with the Kuja Pirates just to have her in their crew. Of course, they were easily defeated and even had their treasures stolen. In Chapter 1157, Shakuyaku settled in Hachinosu, the base of the Rocks Pirates, and started a bar there. She didn’t even have to make an effort to win their hearts, and even Rocks, Newgate, and the others were looking at the same heart-eyes. This opens up the discussion about Sanji’s gag, which has always been controversial.

It only became worse after the time-skip when the anime’s slow-pacing came at the expense of his character portrayal because of the stretched-out scenes of Sanji swooning over women. However, with the manga openly showing all these legendary characters acting the same way Sanji does, it seems like the author is trying to reshape Sanji’s image, even if the change is small.

Having finally wrapped up Kuma’s flashback, One Piece‘s anime has finally returned to the action on present-day Egghead, marking the shift and the upcoming climax of the Egghead Arc with brand new opening and ending themes. Of the two, however, the new opening theme, “Carmine” by Ellegarden, has captivated fans the most. One Piece’s anime has had a streak of amazing opening themes since the beginning of the Wano Arc, and the Egghead Arc’s newest opening has managed to keep that streak intact.

That said, other than its incredibly catchy tune, One Piece’s new opening is also just as beautifully animated as the series’ latest episodes have been so far. Furthermore, true to its namesake, the Egghead Arc’s new opening is full of easter eggs, throwbacks, and references, many of which fly by in the blink of an eye, and these are all of them.

Warning: Contains One Piece Manga Spoilers!

35) The East Blue Gang

The new opening starts off strong with a shot of Vegapunk’s broadcast beginning, which is the major focus of the second half of the Egghead Arc. A monitor off to the side also displays a flatline, hinting at Vegapunk’s imminent death. What follows is a huge throwback to the East Blue Saga with cameos from many old yet unforgettable faces. From left to right, these include Woop Slap, Makino and her baby, Chouchou, the mayor of Orange Town, Shimotsuki Koshiro, the Usopp Pirates, Merry, Kaya, Patty, Zeff, Carne, Chabo, Genzo, Nojiko, Johnny, Yosaku, Nako, Ipponmatsu, Miss Monday Mr 9, Nanday, Crocus, Dalton, and lastly, Dr. Kureha.

34) Koza and Alabasta

One of the many fleeting cameos in the first few seconds of the new One Piece opening is Koza and his father, Toto, who are seen watching Vegapunk’s broadcast in Yuba, Alabasta. Also featured alongside the father-son duo are Erik and Kappa, who were last seen in Volume 22 of the Decks of the World cover story of Chapter 638.

33) Sabo and the Revolutionaries

One of the more unmissable cameos in the opening is Sabo, the recently proclaimed Flame Emperor, who is featured with the various Revolutionary Army Commanders behind him, including Jiron Belo Betty, Lindbergh, Koala, Ushiano, Ahiru, Inazuma, Emporio Invankov, and even Morley, whose giant fist and skirt can just barely be seen in the top left corner.

32) Koby, SWORD, and the Marines

Much like Sabo, the new Egghead opening theme also gives Koby, the new hero of the Marines, the spotlight. Koby is fittingly featured alongside members of SWORD, such as Kujaku, Helmeppo, Prince Grus, Hibari, and, surprisingly enough, X Drake, who, up until this point, was assumed dead in the story. Akainu and Kuzan frame Koby and SWORD on either side, painting the group as the moral middle ground between the two stark ideals of justice.

31) Garling, Gunko, and Shamrock

It hasn’t been long since the younger version of St. Figarland Garling debuted in One Piece’s anime during the God Valley flashback, but the mysterious Holy Knight is back again in One Piece’s new opening theme. Garling appears alongside four cloaked members of the Holy Knights, two of whom clearly appear to be Gunko and Shamrock, judging by the glimpse of Gunko’s bandages and Shamrock’s stubble. Most likely, the tall, broad-chested, cloaked figure to the very left is St. Sommers, while the one to the right is St. Killingham.

30) One Piece’s New Four Emperors of the Sea

Another exciting cameo in the latest opening is that of Shanks, who is framed by the new Emperors Blackbeard and Buggy between the crossed blades at Roger’s execution, while Luffy walks across the shot putting on his straw hat at the end.

29) Vivi and the Poneglyphs

Given the recent revelation of the Nefertari family’s secret D. Clan heritage and their ancestor’s hand in scattering the poneglyphs, it is quite fitting that Vivi is pictured alongside the poneglyphs and the Red Line in the background.

28) Shirahoshi, Luffy, and Blackbeard’s Cut Up Posters

An interesting throwback that fans may have missed in the new One Piece opening is the shot of Shirahoshi’s picture and Luffy and Blackbeard’s cut-up wanted posters, which were first seen when Imu was first introduced in the series alongside the giant Straw Hat. While the significance of this action is yet to be seen, it hints at Imu playing a bigger role going forward.

27) Vivi’s Missing Poster and Luffy’s New Wanted Poster

Besides the throwback to the old wanted poster, the new opening also features a shot of Luffy’s new wanted poster post-Wano, featuring him in Gear Five. Vivi’s missing poster also makes a fleeting cameo in the genius transition shot.

26) The Giant Pirates Arrive at Egghead

One of the biggest spoilers in the new opening theme is the arrival of Dorry and Brogy and the Giant Pirates on Egghead. The duo was only recently revealed to be alive and well during the fight, or rather, the annihilation of Captain Kidd and his crew, and the opening completely spoils the twist of them arriving to aid the Straw Hats amidst the Buster Call.

25) Dorry and Brogy vs. the Five Elders

As if spoiling Dorry and Brogy’s reunion with the Straw Hats wasn’t enough already, the opening sequence also gives fans a glimpse of them fighting the Five Elders, particularly St. Nusjuro. The opening also reveals the series’ first look at the other Five Elders’ transformations, including St. Warcury’s Hoki form and St. Mars’ Istumad form as he flies across the top of the shot.

24) The Secret Submerged World of One Piece

The new opening also gives away one of the biggest upcoming revelations in the series, this being a glimpse at the secret, submerged world of One Piece, whose existence will be revealed during Vegapunk’s broadcast.

23) Ohara’s Research Being Saved

As revealed earlier in the Egghead Arc, Ohara’s research was saved at the cost of the researchers’ lives when they tossed the library’s books into the water with the hope of saving them from the fire ravaging the island. These findings are, of course, at the center of the revelations in Vegapunk’s broadcast, making this passing shot in the opening much more important than it may initially seem.

22) Fishman Island and the Citizens of Lulusia

Included in the long list of cameos in the new opening are also Princess Shirahoshi, King Neptune, as well as Moda the milk maiden from Lulusia, surrounded by the other surviving citizens of the island.

21) Wano and the Royal Palace of Alubarna

The new opening also includes cameos by Momonosuke, Shinobu, Kinemon, and, most adorable of all, Otama, who is seen eating mochi while dressed as a kunoichi. Side by side with the Wano cameos, the opening also includes a shot of King Cobra’s funeral at Alabasta, as evidenced by the sarcophagus at the center and Cobra’s portrait.

20) The Iron Giant of Egghead

Although it may be a while until fans finally see the Iron Giant in action, the new Egghead opening gives fans the perfect teaser of what’s to come. The Iron Giant, who is later revealed to be named Emet, can be seen with his eyes lit up, ready to dive right into the fight, though fans will have to wait to learn what’s awakened him.

19) Bonney Finally Finds Nika

It would be an understatement to say that Bonney recognizing Luffy as Nika is one of the most highly anticipated moments of the Egghead Arc. Kuma’s tragic backstory has highlighted just how crucial Nika is to Bonney as well as Kuma, and the opening theme finally sees her making the connection to Luffy and Gear Five.

18) Mock Town Mocks Vegapunk

Included in the long list of people tuning in to Vegapunk’s posthumous broadcast is also Mock Town, whose citizens can unsurprisingly be seen laughing and mocking Vegapunk’s absurd allegations and revelations. Clearly, nothing has changed since the Straw Hats first arrived at Mock Town.

17) Totto Land

Another major location seen tuning into Vegapunk’s broadcast during the opening is Totto Land, where many can be seen similarly gathered around a transponder snail, including Charlotte Katakuri, Charlotte Brownie, and even Charlotte Moscato, who was last assumed to be dead after having his soul taken by Big Mom.

16) Fullalead

While there don’t seem to be any familiar faces in sight, Pirate Island or Fullalead also makes an appearance in One Piece’s new opening, and it seems like things have somewhat settled down after the fight between Kuzan and Garp.

15) Sabaody

In a shot very reminiscent of the Marineford Arc, Sabaody also makes a fleeting appearance in the new opening theme, as evident by the distinct floating bubbles always present on the island.

14) Karakuri Island

Another unexpected location featured in One Piece’s new opening is Karakuri Island, or specifically, Baldimore, which is not only Vegapunk’s birthplace but also the location of one of the genius scientist’s laboratories where Franky spent much of the two-year time skip.

13) Mariejois

Surprisingly enough, even Mariejois can be seen paying attention to Vegapunk’s message in the new opening theme with multiple Celestial Dragons gathered around the transponder snail and the projection screen. This also includes St. Shalria, whose blonde hair can be spotted at the very left.

12) The Marines at Navy HQ

One Piece’s new opening even checks in with Navy HQ, where multiple Marines are also seen watching Vegapunk’s broadcast. There don’t appear to be any familiar faces among the Marines, especially with most of the Vice Admirals being deployed to Egghead.

11) The World Economic Journal

Besides her other prominent feature later in the opening, Vivi first makes a cameo in the new opening during the quick opening montage, where she, along with Big News Morgans and the employees at the World Economic Journal, can be seen watching Vegapunk’s broadcast as well. While it’s easy to miss him, Wapol can also be seen on the right behind Morgans. Another interesting detail about this shot that fans may have missed is the Four Emperors’ wanted poster above the projection screen.

10) Zou/The Mokomo Dukedom

Several of the Minks from Zou also make an appearance in the new opening, such as Wanda, Shishilian, and even Carrot, the recently appointed ruler of the Mokomo Dukedom.

9) Dressrosa

Kyros, Rebecca, Leo, and Kabu, who seem to have finally returned from the Reverie, also appear to be watching Vegapunk’s broadcast back at Dressrosa in the new opening. Seeing these various locations across the world of One Piece truly puts into perspective just how consequential this mysterious broadcast and Vegapunk’s revelations are going to be.

8) Dragon at Logue Town

Gone are the days when Dragon would only make an appearance in One Piece every few years or so. As One Piece heads into the Final Saga, Dragon has also stepped to the forefront of the story, finally playing a more active role and enacting his secret plans. That said, Dragon’s cameo in the new opening is actually taken from his first appearance in the series at Logue Town, with the opening further deepening the decade-long suspicion that the bolt of lightning that saved Luffy back then, perhaps, wasn’t a coincidence after all.

7) The Straw Hats Hear Luffy’s Dream

In a more recent throwback, the opening theme also calls back to the very beginning of the Egghead Arc when Luffy finally shared his real dream with the Straw Hats. Fans are still nowhere close to decoding this particular mystery but its quite fun to see all the entire crew’s reactions in a single frame.

6) Luffy First Meets Blackbeard

In addition to the Mock Town cameo, One Piece’s new opening theme also interestingly includes a callback to Luffy’s first encounter with Blackbeard and the iconic moment when Blackbeard famously said, “People’s dreams don’t ever end.”

5) Luffy Sets Sail

In another nostalgic throwback in the latest opening theme, fans also get taken back to the very beginning of Luffy’s journey, to when he first set sail, throwing his hands into the air. These throwback shots are also quite visually distinct from the rest of the opening, with a more nostalgic, watercolor-like art style.

4) The Straw Hats Declaring Their Dreams

Easily the most nostalgic shot in the new Egghead opening theme is the one of the Straw Hats declaring their dreams with their feet atop a barrel while entering the Grand Line. Excitingly enough, it may not be too long till fans see this very moment in live-action in Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action One Piece.

3) Ace and Yamato’s Flashback

Unexpectedly, the new opening also references Ace and Yamato’s flashback from the Wano Arc, juxtaposing Sabo, Ace, and Luffy against Oden, Whitebeard, and Roger yet again.

2) Roger at His Execution

One Piece’s new opening theme would have felt incomplete without a callback to the moment and the man who started it all. The transition from Luffy’s near execution at Logue Town to Roger’s arguably completes the new opening and is also what makes the opening feel like the beginning of the end as One Piece enters the final leg of its story.

1) Joyboy and Emet

While fans may have initially brushed it off as being Luffy or a shot of Luffy and the Iron Giant from the present day, the figure in the Straw Hat seen with Emet during the title card sequence is actually Joyboy. The fact that Emet has both his horns and also seems to be missing any of the rust and moss on him during this scene is the biggest giveaway. In fact, the hand reaching for the Straw Hat at the end of the opening may also belong to Joyboy, in which case, One Piece’s newest opening may have just revealed more about the mysterious Void Century figure than the series ever has in the last twenty-five years.

One Piece can be streamed on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

One Piece Elbaf Arc

One Piece teased its ongoing Elbaf Arc over two decades ago, during the Little Garden Arc, when the Straw Hat Pirates encountered Dorry and Brogy. Luffy and Usopp were the most excited about visiting the Land of the Giants, and their dream has finally come true. Elbaf is the second arc of the Final Saga and brings many surprises for fans within the first few episodes. The Giants are the strongest race in the world, but they have lived in isolation for centuries. They are also one of the three races that revered Nika as the Sun God and the Warrior of Liberation.

For a long time, Elbaf was expected to be a lore-heavy arc, and Eiichiro Oda hasn’t disappointed at all so far. The corresponding villains are appropriately powerful to raise the stakes, but that’s not the only thing that makes this arc. Even though the ongoing arc is still in its initial phases, there are a lot of mysteries that are already being unraveled, and it’s pointing towards the impending war that will shake the entire world. Everything that has happened in Elbaf so far is more than enough proof that the end is closer than ever for One Piece, and it’s not pulling any punches.

One Piece’s Elbaf Arc Is Loaded With Lore Drops and Several Shocking Plot Twists

One Piece Mural
Shonen Jump

The massive mural in Chapter 1138 is a treasure trove of information about not just the current era and the Void Century, but also the era where Nika existed. The Adam Tree has been holding those cryptic messages for several centuries, which the Straw Hat Pirates won’t be able to find in the entire world. Several of those elements in the mural circle us back to the Skypiea Arc, one of the most underrated and important arcs in One Piece.

One Piece Nika

The ancient city of gold, Shandora, was lifted into the sky by the knock-up stream, becoming part of the island of Skypiea. The Straw Hats visit the Sky Island before the time skip, and the series dropped several hints about the forgotten history. Additionally, Jarul, the Hero of the Giants, reveals that they have an ancient text called the Harley, which contains numerous historical facts and a treasure trove of One Piece lore for the theorists.

However, since no one is able to read the language, there have been several interpretations of Nika over the centuries, including the mythical figure being a god of destruction, a god of liberation, or a god of laughter. Regardless of what they believe, one thing is for certain: Nika only appears when the world is about to undergo a major change. Now that Luffy has awakened his Devil Fruit, the “change” that will happen in this era will be the aftermath of the Great War.

Elbaf Arc Cements Shanks’s Crucial Role in the Overall Story

Shanks Luffy One Piece

The Holy Knights are one of the strongest, if not the strongest, antagonist groups in the series, and they are led by Shanks’s family. Saint Figarland Garling is the Supreme Commander as well as the newly appointed Warrior God of Science and Defense, one of the Five Elders. Additionally, Shamrock Figarland, Shanks’ older twin brother, is the Commander of the elite guard. The manga also reveals that Shanks is aware of his identity and even went to the Holy Land of Mariejois several years ago.

However, he still decided to live in the lower world and continue his life as a pirate in order to achieve a certain goal. During Harald’s backstory, Scopper Gaban, the Left Hand of the Pirate King, called Shanks the “child of fate,” which leads to his future role in the world. Shanks is the catalyst of the story, and everything he has done so far is for a greater cause. However, no other arc has put more emphasis on this character so far.

Harald’s Backstory Introduces the Most Mysterious Pirate

One Piece Rocks D Xebec

The late of King of Elbaf, Harald’s backstory began right before the major fight in Elbaf to answer the question about his tragic murder in the Aurust Castle 14 years ago. Although Loki’s innocence has been proven, the identity of the killer is still unknown. However, before revealing the truth behind Elbaf’s greatest tragedy, the manga takes a detour and depicts his journey from being a reckless Giant to the greatest King of Elbaf.

However, shockingly enough, the manga finally introduced the identity of Rocks D. Xebec, who is Blackbeard’s father. We also learn about how Xebec formed his crew and his true goal that he never got to achieve. He is also one of the few characters who came face-to-face with Imu and lived to tell the tale.

One Piece Fans Are in for More Surprises in the Upcoming Chapters

One Piece Harald Loki Luffy

One Piece has had several iconic arcs over the years, including Water 7 and Marineford. While every arc is great in its own way, not a single one has focused this heavily on lore, not even the Egghead Incident Arc. This arc is a delight for those who prioritize lore and mysteries over everything else. The fights are also intense so far, with Imu, the series’ final antagonist, joining the battle after overtaking Gunko’s body. Not to mention that this is still only the beginning. The backstory will continue for a few more chapters, unraveling the mystery behind Harald’s death and how Loki got framed.

Additionally, we may learn more about the legendary Devil Fruit that Loki possesses. Since the backstory features certain events from the past, we may get another glimpse at the God Valley Incident from a different perspective and learn more about Xebec’s defeat. As the fight continues, One Piece is sure to drop more lore during the arc. The question remains, how much deeper does the lore get as the series approaches its finale?

The Elbaf Arc is a thrilling opportunity for One Piece fans to see decades of mysteries get answers, while surprisingly generating entirely new ones in the process. What is your favorite arc in the series? Let us know in the comments below!

One Piece anime better than manga with Luffy

One Piece manga fans have peculiar opinions about the anime adaptation. The anime adaptation is faithful to the source material, but because the anime is running nearly concurrently with the manga, One Piece has to pad out some scenes. This gave the anime the reputation of being excessively slow with its pacing. Add in its daunting episode count, and the One Piece anime is viewed as an overlong series with poor pacing. In fairness, the anime does have awkward pacing issues, with certain scenes from the manga not translating as strongly as fans would want.

Nonetheless, there are moments from the One Piece anime that outshine even the manga itself. The anime has the benefits of a score, voice acting, and animation to convey the story, whereas the manga only has Eiichiro Oda’s drawings and dialogue. While Oda’s artwork is amazing, carries gravitas, and guides the story’s vision, the anime is capable of delivering some impactful moments. While it isn’t common, there are at least ten moments from the One Piece anime that surpass the original manga.

10) Kuma’s Flashback

One Piece Kuma's mother
Toei Animation

This is likely a divisive placement, as some fans have derided the Kuma’s flashback in the anime for making slight deviations. Most of these deviations include adding more scenes with Kuma and his loved ones, including one final heartbreaking moment with him and his mother.

There’s also a little bit more action and padding that stretches Kuma’s history. Nonetheless, the padding actually enhances Kuma’s story in One Piece’s anime, as viewers get to experience more of Kuma’s life than they do in the manga. Although some of the extra scenes aren’t necessary, they are at least used to build Kuma’s life rather than detracting from it.

9) The Walk to Arlong Park

This is a situation where the inclusion of sound adds so much to the scene. Nami’s breakdown, Luffy consoling her by placing his straw hat on her head, and the group walking to Arlong are already powerful images in the manga. But the inclusion of voice acting and the iconic music in the manga enhances what was already present in the manga. The Straw Hats’ walk to Arlong’s Park wouldn’t nearly be as iconic if it weren’t for the soundtrack.

8) The Going Merry’s Funeral

One Piece Going Merry fire
Toei Animation

The Going Merry was the original ship the Straw Hat pirates sailed on, and it was almost an additional crew member. Losing the Going Merry was almost like losing a beloved character, and the anime milks the funeral fire scene for all its worth. Such a moment is worth drawing out to let the viewers grieve the loss of a friend, especially with the reveal of the ship’s Klabautermann speaking to the crew in its final days.

The softer atmosphere, sadder music, and dull coloring transform an already somber moment from the manga into a genuinely heartbreaking scene. The voice acting, including the English dub and the original Japanese subtitles, effectively conveys the funeral’s inherent sadness in a way that a manga can’t.

7) Luffy vs. Sanji During the Whole Cake Island Arc

When Sanji left the Straw Hat crew to rejoin his family, the bigger shock was that he was secretly royalty, rather than the simple event of his departure. The manga never properly gave the weight of Sanji’s decision, even when he beats Luffy to a pulp. Readers never believed Sanji would abandon the crew permanently. Credit it to the anime, specifically Luffy’s Japanese voice actress, Mayumi Tanaka, for giving the fight between Luffy and Sanji some legitimate gravitas. Sanji leaving the crew now has real consequences, and Luffy’s pleas would likely go down as one of Tanaka’s finest performances.

6) Gear 5 Luffy

Toei Animation

All credit goes to Oda for giving Gear 5 Luffy so much personality and perfectly replicating the old-timey cartoon effects from 1940s Tom and Jerry cartoons. However, Gear 5 was always designed with the One Piece anime in mind. It’s one thing for Oda to create the illusion of motion in his manga; it’s another thing to see it actually animated. Luffy turning the literal floor into rubber, his eyes popping out, and stretching out a piece of the floor to deflect Kaido’s fire blast is so much cooler in animation than in drawing.

5) G-8 Filler Arc

G-8 arc from the anime is one of the more respected filler arcs in any anime. Even diehard manga purists begrudingly respect the arc for not only continuing the story but also developing the characters in a way that makes the next arc feel more organic. This was also one of the few times that Luffy and the Straw Hats couldn’t punch their way out of a situation. The group needed to figure out a way to outsmart the marines and escape safely with their ship. It’s a cat-and-mouse story that also greatly humanized the Marines during a time when they were primarily villainous.

4) One Piece Episode 1015

one-piece-1015.jpg
Toei Animation

One Piece Episode 1015 adapted the manga’s incredible 1000th chapter, which includes Luffy delivering his biggest punch to Kaido during the Wano Arc. For the momentous occasion, the anime crew went all out, presenting an episode that was not like any other.

From the lightning to the animation, the episode delivered the goods, with Luffy’s iconic declaration of becoming the King of the Pirates sending shivers down fans’ spines. Episode 1015 reinvigorated viewers’ interest in the Wano arc, setting the stage for the Luffy and Kaido rematch that would carry the rest of the arc. What would follow cemented for fans just how incredibly potent One Piece’s anime has become as a visual enhancement on the manga in every sense.

3) Luffy’s Final Punch To Crocodile

Crocodile is the first antagonist that truly pushed Luffy and the Strawhats to the breaking point. He remains a fan-favorite villain and is one of the few bad guys to defeat Luffy multiple times. When Luffy finally defeats Crocodile with a series of punches, sending him up through the floor of the underground ruins, Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9,” also known as the “New World Symphony,” begins playing.

It’s a little jarring at first to hear classical music begin playing in One Piece, but the music adds a grandeur and artistry to the moment that was not presented in the manga. It could’ve come off pretentious and unnecessary, yet the moment is earned by how hard Luffy fought to overcome Crocodile. The track makes the anime sophisticated, with “New World Symphony” potentially having multiple meanings. It’s an iconic moment for the One Piece anime and is worth watching for any fan of the brand.

2) Luffy Punches A Celestial Dragon

The moment when Luffy punches a Celestial Dragon, the untouchable noblemen who run the world, is satisfying in both the manga and anime. Oda includes plenty of detail in the manga, showing Luffy indenting Saint Charlos’ face. However, the anime elevates the material with a simple yet powerful decision to make the scene go black-and-white as soon as Luffy makes contact with Charlos’ face. The lack of color gives more weight to Luffy’s punch, almost as if he is punching the color out of the area.

Saint Charlos was also a highly despicable person. He was allowed to keep slaves, steal people away from their families, and be unpleasant. No one could touch him, or else the might of the Marines would arrive to aid the Celestial Dragon. Luffy knew this, but still punched him anyway. It was a cathartic moment for the audience and remains one of the most cherished scenes for fans.

1) Zoro’s Backstory

one-piece-remake-anime-zoro-kuina.jpg
Zoro and Kuina make a promise in The One Piece concept art

The early parts of the One Piece anime were allowed to take more liberties with the source material. The brand had yet to establish itself as the global powerhouse it would become, nor did anyone involved know how long the manga would run. One of these early liberties was rearranging the order of events for Luffy’s and Zoro’s backstory, pushing Zoro’s origins before the Baratie Arc. Whereas Zoro’s backstory was an efficient couple of pages in the manga, the anime chose to extend the flashback into a full episode.

While the modern One Piece anime would fill out an episode with unnecessary padding, anime creators decided to expand certain things about Zoro’s life that benefited the story. We got to see more of Zoro in his childhood village and learn more about the motivations of Zoro’s childhood friend, Kuina. Spending so much time in Zoro’s life allows audiences to be swept into the story, with the inevitable tragedy hitting that much harder. It remains not only the pinnacle of early One Piece, but also for the franchise as a whole.

One Piece Luffy Bon Clay

During the 28 years of One Piece’s serialization, the manga has introduced countless new characters. Most of them don’t even appear for years, but still remain fan-favorites because of their roles in the story. Luffy has a knack for bringing out the best in people, no matter who they are. During the Alabasta Saga, he met Bentham, famously known as Bon Clay, who worked for the Warlord Crocodile. The first meeting between Bon Clay and the Straw Hat Pirates was hilarious and somewhat chaotic, but it didn’t take long for the truth to be revealed. They were only enemies for a brief period before Bon Clay sacrificed himself to save Luffy and the others.

Luffy reunites with his ally in the Impel Down Arc, and the two once again stand against the villains together. Again, Bon Clay doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself for the second time as long as Luffy can save his older brother, Portgas D. Ace, from execution. Even though he hasn’t appeared since then, he still holds a special place in the One Piece fandom for all he did to help the protagonist. August 15th is Bon Clay’s birthday, and the official X handle of the One Piece portal site shares a special art to hype up the character. In the visual, Bon Clay is donning his iconic swan outfit, which he used to wear during his time working as Mr. 2 in the Baroque Works.

What Happened to Bon Clay in One Piece?

Bon Clay One Piece

Bon Clay stayed behind while disguised as Magellan, to help Luffy pass through the Gates of Justice. It was the only way for Luffy, Jinbe, and the others to escape, but it would also mean that Bon Clay wouldn’t be able to survive. Although he didn’t want Luffy to find out, Jinbe couldn’t keep silent knowing it was unfair to both of them. Jinbe also gave Luffy a baby Transponder Snail. On the other side of the line, Bon Clay was facing the real Magellan and awaiting justice at his hands. The friends bid a tearjerking farewell to each other before Bon Clay disappeared from the story, leaving his fate unknown.

However, about three years later since his disappearance, the cover story of One Piece Chapter 666 revealed that Bon Clay miraculously survived that day. He is now the new queen of Newkama Land in Impel Down, Level 5.5. He is seen dancing in front of his followers, wearing his swan outfit, instead of the one meant for the prisoners in Impel Down.

Chapter 666 was part of the manga’s 19th cover story, From the Decks of the World, where Eiichiro Oda draws short, serial narratives featured on the title pages of manga chapters, focusing on characters after their encounters with the Straw Hat Pirates. The cover featured one character in each installment, and only Chapter 666 was dedicated to Bon Clay. The character, despite his popularity, has yet to make an appearance in the manga again, even though it has been more than a decade.

One Piece Gaban Rayleigh rivalry

The One Piece manga has now properly introduced fans to Roger Pirates crewmate Scopper Gaban, who has been living in Elbaf all along. Gaban sailed the seas with Gol D. Roger and is still considered a legendary pirate thanks to his achievements and the fact that he is one of the few people in the world who saw the One Piece. Up until now, the series has only introduced him in flashbacks, but the Elbaf Arc highlights his life as a retired pirate. While Gaban is called the Pirate King’s left hand, Roger’s first mate and his right hand was Silvers Rayleigh. Both pirates competed for the spot of the second strongest in the crew.

Since Rayleigh and Gaban were always close in strength, there wasn’t any way to determine which of them was better. Before the Elbaf Arc, Rayleigh was believed to have the second spot in the crew, but Gaban couldn’t let the man have the title. In Chapter 1151, despite his severe injuries, Gaban gathers all his strength to announce that he was the second strongest, although he did so jokingly since he couldn’t stand the Giants putting him below Rayleigh in power scaling. However, while that debate remains unsettled, One Piece proved that Gaban outshines Rayleigh in one aspect, and it’s much better than any power scaling discourse.

Gaban Turned Out to Be a Much Better Husband Than Rayleigh

One Piece Rayleigh Shakky

Rayleigh and Shakky (Shakuyaku) were introduced in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc. Although the series doesn’t explicitly mention their relationship, it has been heavily implied that they are both in an open marriage, or a possibly one-sided commitment with Rayleigh being a less-than-faithful partner, either way, Shakky seems to accept it in One Piece. Rayleigh has even been with several other women over the years, and Shakky is aware of that. However, she brushed it off, seemingly unbothered by it. The two still seem to have a cordial relationship, but that’s about it. However, during her prime, when she was the first mate of Gloriosa, the Pirate Empress during Rocks’ era, Shakky was like a celebrity, making her friends and foes swoon over her.

One Piece Gaban Ripley

Shakky was sought out after encountering the Roger Pirates, and even the Marines couldn’t keep their eyes off of her. Rayleigh was immune to her charms initially, but he also couldn’t help but blush when she winked at him. She later became the Pirate Empress herself before handing the torch to Tritoma, Boa Hancock’s predecessor. At some point in the story, she ended up with Rayleigh, despite all the world’s top-tier and better men swooning over her who may not take her for granted. We may even get to learn more about their story since the backstory is far from over.

On the other hand, we have Gaban, who married Ripley, a gorgeous Giant warrior, and had a son with her over 20 years ago. Colon is still a child since the Giants have a slow aging process, but Gaban has a more fulfilling life than Rayleigh. He shed tears of joy when Colon was born, calling his son the greatest treasure in his life. Despite sailing across the entire world and even seeing the One Piece, he truly believes that nothing is more precious to him than his family. In the Elbaf Arc, he could’ve easily defeated all the Holy Knights, but surrendered after seeing his son’s life in danger.

One Piece is one of the best anime available to stream on Crunchyroll, with over 1,000 episodes on the platform. Several arcs even feature local dubs, and it’s no surprise that the series ranks among the highest-rated by users, boasting nearly 700,000 reviews and an impressive 4.8 out of 5 rating. As of August 13th, the streaming service has added the English dub for Egghead Part 2, covering episodes 1123–1133, and it’s clear that more are on the way. While Crunchyroll’s anime library continues to thrive, this latest update also sparks renewed hope for its movie selection.

Three classic One Piece movies were just announced for streaming by the series’ official account on X (formerly Twitter). Joining the existing lineup of movies on Crunchyroll are One Piece – Episode of Arabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates, One Piece Film: Strong World, and One Piece Film: Z. All three films are over a decade old, with the first nearing its twentieth anniversary, but they’re undeniably a welcome addition. Fans now have the chance to revisit these classics and immerse themselves in the classic era as the series approaches its conclusion.

Crunchyroll Adds Three Classic One Piece Movies Starting August 13th

While the addition of the three classic One Piece movies is a pleasant surprise, it is far from a special one, as these films are already available on other streaming platforms in the Western region. Furthermore, although One Piece Film: Strong World and One Piece Film: Z bring their own unique premises, Episode of Arabasta is simply a condensed retelling of the Arabasta arc. It primarily benefits fans who wish to revisit the arc’s major events and is not recommended for new viewers who want to experience the narrative of One Piece in all its glory. That said, Strong World and Film: Z remain solid additions, with Strong World even considered a canonical event due to its focus on Shiki, the Golden Lion, as the antagonist, revealed to be a member of the Rocks Pirates, who are currently playing a crucial role in the series.

However, these movies are also available on platforms such as Netflix, making the additions far from exclusive. Still, it’s encouraging to see Crunchyroll expanding its movie library. If anything, this could spark hope that the platform may eventually bring more classic One Piece films, older than two decades, that perfectly encapsulate the classic anime films, to the Western region that are otherwise only available in Japan, including the franchise’s very first movie, additions that would be not only surprising but truly special.

One Piece Luffy New Opening

One Piece Episode 1139 introduced the latest opening and ending themes of the Egghead Incident Arc, and this will be the last one before the anime commences the Elbaf Arc. The series recently concluded the heartbreaking backstory of Bartholomew Kuma and answered the truth behind his tragic fate. As the focus shifts to the main fight of the arc, One Piece’s new opening drops several spoilers from the manga. We also learn about more villains who will soon appear on the island. Additionally, Luffy and the others will reunite with their friends after 24 years.

The opening, Carmine by Ellegarden, isn’t simply pleasing to hear but is visually breathtaking. It delivers a striking mix of vibrant animation and smooth transitions, which perfectly blend with the mood of the music, creating an electrifying experience. Yuki Kamiya, the director behind Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 opening, Ao no Sumika, and the key animator of Season 2 opening 2, Specialz, worked on this beautiful new One Piece theme. Additionally, Kamiya also directed the ending themes three and eight of Chainsaw Man. Apart from MAPPA and Toei Animation Studio, Kamiya also worked with WIT Studio to prepare the storyboard of its underrated Sci-Fi original, Moonrise.

What to Expect From the Egghead Incident Arc in One Piece’s Anime

The arc is in its last stretch, but the threat is far from over. Saint Jaygarcia Saturn’s arrival only made the situation worse, especially after the crew got the upper hand against the Marines and CP0. Kizaru is down for the count, and he is overwhelmed by the burden of trying to kill one of his oldest friends. However, the Five Elders are desperate to silence Vegapunk as soon as possible because of the threat his knowledge poses. Kuma’s arrival also changes a lot of things, since we now know that his consciousness hasn’t completely faded, even after his ultimate sacrifice.

The opening theme already dropped more than enough hints about the major incidents that will take place in the rest of the arc. We see the entire world listening to Vegapunk’s message, and judging by their reaction, he must have revealed something shocking. Not only is Vegapunk the most genius scientist in the world, but he also has significant knowledge about the Void Century, thanks to his years of research. However, apart from lore, the story will keep focusing on the ongoing fight, which will soon go downhill from here on out. So far, only Saint Jaygarcia Saturn has arrived on the island, and his demonic powers are quite intimidating.

To make matters worse, the opening theme teases the arrival of the other four Elders and even reveals the true form of Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro. We will soon see the true forms of the other three. However, apart from villains, even Luffy’s allies, the Giant Pirates, will show up on the island. Egghead has already set up the Elbaf Arc, and it won’t be long before the anime commences the most highly anticipated arc of the series.

One Piece‘s anime is back in action with new episodes working through the second phase of the Egghead Arc, and the first look at the next episode is setting up fans for Gear 5 Luffy’s big comeback. One Piece: Egghead Arc Part 2 had been spending the last couple of months working through an emotional flashback arc exploring Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney’s past, but now it’s time to return to the present day as Luffy and the others need to escape the chaos across Dr. Vegapunk’s future island laboratory. And things are only going to get more intense from here on out.

Now that One Piece has kicked off the climax of the Egghead Arc with its latest episode, things are only going to get more dangerous for Luffy and the Straw Hats. Luffy had been out of action thanks to all of the use of his Gear 5 form through the fights thus far, but thankfully the first look teaser for One Piece Episode 1140 is gearing up for Luffy’s return to the Gear 5 form. Which should level the playing field a bit. You can check it out in action with the video below.

How to Watch One Piece Episode 1140

One Piece Episode 1140 is titled “An Admired Hero – The Warrior of Liberation Who Saves Bonney” and will be making its debut on Sunday, August 17th in Japan. The episode will be streaming with Crunchyroll when it hits (and will be releasing with Netflix about a week after), and the episode preview teases it as such, “The Drums of Liberation echo throughout Egghead again! Can an extraordinary power, making even the ground and buildings dance, truly be the force to save Egghead? Nika, the Sun God that Bonney and her father had always dreamt of finally appears!”

One Piece has truly kicked off the final phase of the Egghead Arc with these newest episodes, and that naturally means that Gear 5 Luffy is going to be absolutely necessary for what’s coming next. There are going to be some massive battles coming in the months ahead (as teased by the newest opening theme), and Luffy is really going to need to be as strong as he possibly can so that he’ll be able to help the others escape from yet another Buster Call that’s been invoked.

What’s Next for One Piece: Egghead Arc?

Toei Animation

One Piece: Egghead Arc Part 2 won’t be the only new anime release to look forward to in the franchise’s future, however. As the anime continues to expand further with new releases, it was announced during One Piece Day 2025 earlier this month that One Piece will soon be launching a new spinoff project. Taking on the One Piece: Heroines light novel, this new anime will be adapting stories about the series’ standout heroines that weren’t seen in the original series. But a release window or date has yet to be announced as of the time of this writing.

The anime and manga won’t be all that’s in the works, however, as a new season of the live-action series is on the way. Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 is now titled One Piece: Into the Grand Line, and is currently scheduled for a release with the streaming service some time next year. It has also been announced that a third season of the live-action adaptation is in the works as well, and production on those new episodes will kick off soon.

At the height of the excitement surrounding One Piece Day ’25, Netflix’s live-action One Piece series recently shared a brand new trailer for the series’ highly anticipated second season. It’s been two years since the live-action series was released, with the adaptation surprisingly receiving nothing but love from fans who have been very excited for Season 2. That said, along with the excitement, this new trailer has also stirred up quite a bit of drama and controversy, and it all has to do with the casting for Princess Vivi in the live-action.

The new Netflix live-action One Piece trailer has finally given fans their first glimpse at Season 2. This includes key locations such as Logue Town, Reverse Mountain, and Whiskey Peak, as well as beloved characters like Captain Smoker, Nico Robin, Laboon, and Princess Vivi. While reactions to most of these new faces have been positive, unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Vivi, whose casting has sparked a very heated debate among fans. Charithra Chandran, who has been cast as Vivi, has sadly been at the center of this controversy, and her co-star Emily Rudd, who plays the Straw Hats’ navigator Nami, just joined the conversation, slamming down on the hate.

Emily Rudd Speaks Out Against Hate Towards Charithra Chandran’s Casting as Vivi

While there were a few fans who were on the fence when Charithra Chandran was first revealed to have been cast as Vivi in the One Piece live-action, the new trailer for Season 2 has blown the debate surrounding Vivi’s casting to a whole new level. The criticism surrounding the casting has been quite vicious this time around, crossing the line into unfair hatred directed towards Chandran, with many fans even denouncing the once-loved adaptation.

Amidst the growing controversy, many of Chandran’s One Piece co-stars have come out in her defense, including Rob Colletti, who plays Wapol, who openly stated that Chandran had been hand-picked by One Piece’s creator, Eiichiro Oda, for the role. Emily Rudd also recently joined the conversation on X under a post by @pewpiece, providing some clarity on the situation and staunchly defending Chandran against the hate. In one of her replies, Rudd said, “The intention is to flag that hatred directed toward a specific person for simply doing a job (and job well done at that) is unacceptable,” which quite accurately sums up the situation and the hate that Chandran has been unfairly subjected to.

It’s Too Soon to Judge One Piece’s Live-Action Vivi

Netflix One Piece Nami actor Emily Rudd on Vivi controversy

It would have maybe been justifiable if the criticism was about Vivi’s costume design in the live-action or the fact that she sports a slightly different hair color. However, all of the hate is solely focused on the fact that the actor cast to play Vivi isn’t white but a person of color, which is simply unfair to Chandran, not to mention racist. As Rob Colletti also pointed out in his recent statement, the kingdom of Alabasta is highly inspired by the Middle East and North Africa, which is why it makes sense to cast a person of color.

The live-action series does not need to be a one-for-one remake of the original anime, and if that bothered fans, then there should have been complaints about why Usopp doesn’t have a long nose or why Iñaki Godoy’s hair is curly instead of straight and spiky like Luffy’s. Many fans have also cast doubt on the claim that Oda chose Chandran to play Vivi, but even if he did not directly, he most definitely gave his approval. Eiichiro Oda has been heavily involved in the production of the live-action series ever since Season 1, even visiting Cape Town during the filming of Season 2.

Netflix One Piece Vivi casting controversy
Toei Animation

Overall, while these hurtful and hateful comments come from a very small portion of the One Piece fandom, it’s unfortunate that any of the series’ fans would take to sending hate to the actor at all, especially for a character as precious and beloved as Vivi. You can bet that Luffy and Nami certainly wouldn’t stand for Vivi being treated this way, and in that sense, Emily Rudd very much embodied Nami in standing up for Charithra Chandran.

Most importantly, Vivi’s appearance in the latest trailer only consists of a few fleeting seconds. Yet, many of these fans have already made up their minds before even seeing Chandran’s performance as Vivi in full, a hasty knee-jerk response to a very small amount of footage, especially since Chandran has proven to be an excellent actor. Her role as Edwina Sharma in Season 2 of Bridgerton is an excellent recent example of her phenomenal acting and just how lovable she’s going to be as Vivi in Netflix’s One Piece, and not giving her a chance just because of her ethnicity or skin color is a pointless hill to die on.

Now that One Piece’s anime has concluded Kuma’s heartwrenching backstory, the story will resume focusing on the chaos in Egghead. The island home for Vegapunk’s research finds itself under deadly assault by the Marines, while Luffy and the others are in mortal danger after Saint Jaygarcia Saturn’s unexpected arrival. His gigantic demonic form and mysterious regenerative powers are unlike anything the Straw Hats have ever seen. Saturn was ready to kill Bonney, but Kuma saved her in the nick of time in a stunningly satisfying eleventh hour rescue. Despite losing his humanity, he has been searching for his daughter all along, even to the point of running away from the Revolutionary Army, leaving them worried sick about his well-being.

Bonney has been hiding her age with the power of her Devil Fruit, but in reality, she’s just a 12-year-old child who is too afraid to lose her father. Kuma is the only family she has ever known, and learning about his past has been too overwhelming for her. She burst into tears after seeing him fighting to protect her. Their heartwarming reunion doesn’t last long since Saturn is prepared to get rid of both of them. One Piece Episode 1139 debuts the latest opening, Carmine by Ellegarden, which features the anime version of the Final Saga’s best scene.

One Piece’s Latest Opening Features Bonney Witnessing Gear 5 for the First Time

Even though Bonney and Luffy have been fighting on the same island, they were rather far removed from one another, meaning she didn’t witness him using his Gear 5 form. Because of her upbringing, Nika, the Sun God, holds a lot of importance to her, even though she doesn’t even know what the mythical being looks like. Kuma grew up listening to Nika’s story and watching his father perform the traditional dance, regardless of how many difficulties they faced. He carried on the same tradition with his daughter, and the two would perform the same Nika dance.

Even on the brink of death, Bonney remembered her father’s promise that Nika, the Sun God, would save her. The scene is from Chapter 1106, when Bonney watches Luffy’s Gear 5 in all its glory, awestruck by his mystical form. Vegapunk explains to her the properties of Luffy’s Devil Fruit. This scene may seem simple at first glance, but it holds special meaning as Nika is the symbol of hope. Not to mention that her father’s promise is fulfilled later on when she sees Nika in front of her, proving that such a wonderful person didn’t just exist in stories. We will likely witness this scene in Episode 1140, which is scheduled to be released on August 17th, 2025.

One Piece’s anime commenced the Egghead Incident Arc in January 2024 and is now heading towards its finale. After Luffy’s legendary victory against Kaido in Wano, the crew arrives in the futuristic island of Egghead. They meet Dr. Vegapunk, the world’s most genius scientist, who spent several decades doing the World Government’s bidding. Although Vegapunk’s contributions have helped the Marines significantly, the World Government doesn’t hesitate for a second to cast him aside after learning that he has been researching the Void Century. As we have learned from the Ohara Incident, they don’t plan on letting anyone live if they have even brief knowledge about the world’s true history.

As soon as Luffy and his crew arrive on the island with Jewelry Bonney, they are stuck fighting several opponents. First, the CP0 agents arrive on the island and challenge the crew. After their defeat, Admiral Kizaru brings 100 Marine ships, which include several Vice Admirals. Even though Luffy’s group is outnumbered, they still weren’t overwhelmed by their enemies. Finally, Saturn’s arrival makes things worse since his demonic powers and regenerative abilities are something the crew has never faced before. While the arc is mostly action-driven, the series features Kuma’s backstory in the middle of the battle. Now that Kuma’s flashback has finally concluded and the fighting has resumed, the Egghead Incident Arc is heading towards its finale.

One Piece’s Latest Opening Teases the Five Elders’ Powers

Although the crew has faced several opponents in Egghead so far, none of them were the primary antagonists, not even Kizaru. The latest opening theme, Carminde by Ellegarden, which debuted in Episode 1139, finally reveals that the main villains of the arc will be all Five Elders. So far, only Saturn is fighting the crew on the island, but soon, the other four will follow him. The opening theme shows their silhouettes and only features the true forms of Saturn and Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro.

Nusjuro’s form is a hybrid of a skeletal horse and himself. He carries around a sword to attack his opponents, unlike Saturn, who relies more heavily on his powers than close combat. During the Reverie Incident flashback, Sabo entered the Throne Room to rescue Nefertari Cobra from Imu and the Elders. However, he didn’t expect all five Elders to take on demonic forms. He even commented that the top of the world looks like hell. The manga only showed silhouettes back then and revealed their powers in the Egghead Incident Arc. They will arrive on the island using the same summoning circle and will cause way more problems for the pirates than Kizaru ever did.

Each year, the franchise celebrates One Piece Day to commemorate the manga’s debut on July 22nd, 1997. The event’s date varies each year, and it was held in August 2025. Along with several exciting updates regarding the anime and manga, the trailer of Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action Season 2 was also revealed. Two years after the first season’s debut and its record-breaking global popularity, fans get a first glimpse at the crew’s journey in the Grand Line. The second season will drop in 2026, and the trailer also confirmed the third season, which will presumably be released shortly after.

Season 2 is expected to cover Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island Arcs. Right after the Drum Island Arc is over, the story moves on to the main event of Alabasta, which will be adapted in Season 3. The trailer introduced several new characters, including Nico Robin, Smoker, Princess Vivi, Brogy, Laboon, and even Tony Tony Chopper was introduced with a special announcement. Although the trailer didn’t feature Crocodile, his actor was announced last year to a strongly positive reception. While all these characters are getting fans’ attention, the cast of Portgas D. Ace has not been revealed.

Who Is Portgas D. Ace in One Piece?

One Piece Ace

Ace is Luffy’s older brother and a high-ranking member of a legendary pirate crew. The two of them grew up together in Foosha Village, and Ace set sail two years before Luffy did. During the Alabasta Saga, he is hunting a dangerous pirate all by himself and ends up on Drum Island, where his target was last seen. He didn’t manage to reunite with Luffy and knew his younger brother was heading towards Alabasta, which also happens to be Ace’s next destination. Although Ace only appears briefly in the Drum Island Arc, he will meet Luffy in Alabasta and will likely have a major role.

Thanks to his quirky personality, Ace became a fan-favorite character in One Piece during the Alabasta Arc. Considering the significant changes from the manga in the live-action adaptation, it may be possible that the series won’t introduce him in Drum Island, which explains why he isn’t in the trailer. However, there are very minimal chances that Netflix will completely remove his role from the Alabasta Arc because of his massive popularity. It’s possible that the series is gatekeeping his actor and introducing him at an appropriate time to build more hype.

Netflix recently released the first trailer for the live-action One Piece’s second season, teasing the arrival of new heroes and villains that will be joining the Straw Hat Pirates as they officially enter the Grand Line. Unfortunately, not all news has been good, as a campaign has been created in response to the casting of Charithra Chandran. As a result of this campaign, the actor playing Wapol, Rob Colletti, took to social media to express his displeasure with those rallying against Chandran.

On his Instagram Stories, the live-action Wapol stated the following, “It’s astonishing to me in all the wrong ways how a certain small (but far too vocal) corners of the One Piece fandom can watch a rubber pirate, a reindeer doctor, and giant walking, talking fish and be totally fine… but draw the line at the simple IDEA of Nefertari Vivi being played by a woman who isn’t white. Charithra was hand-selected by Oda, and he has far more knowledge and understanding of his own characters than anyone else, particularly the hateful, unimaginative creeps who actually have the audacity to get on the internet to throw hate speech towards an actor without even seeing their absolutely amazing performance on the show.”

Wapol’s Rage

Rob’s response continued, as the live-action Wapol didn’t mince words, “Let’s talk facts: ‘Nefertari’ is Egyptian. Where is Egypt? The Middle East. The kingdom of Alabasta draws heavily from Middle Eastern and Southern Asian culture. And you’re complaining because the actor chosen to play the role… isn’t white?! Do you know how ridiculous you sound?! Representation matters. Casting Charithra isn’t “cHaNgiNg ThE cHaRaCtEr!!!” It’s actually honoring Oda’s intended vision. And that’s a lot more important to ‘protecting One Piece‘ the way you’re crying about than coddling what your *PERCEPTION* of what this character should be.”

“For those of you incapable of looking past your racist and hateful tendencies, Charithra delivers an ASTONISHING performance. One that will reverberate in the One Piece fandom forever. She isn’t just good in the show, she is EXCEPTIONAL. And even more important than that, Charithra is one of the kindest, most generous human beings I’ve ever had the honor of knowing and befriending. She embodies EVERYTHING the heroes of One Piece are written to embody, and we are SO LUCKY to have her helping us tell this story.”

Colletti then shared his feelings regarding why Charithra is the perfect choice to play Alabasta’s princess, “We should all CELEBRATE what Charithra brings to this fandom because the show is BETTER with her on it! If that alone doesn’t move you to be excited, you misunderstand One Piece at its core. But to those of you whose suspension of disbelief survives devil fruits, giant sea monsters, snails that become telephones, and all of the other marvelous, wondrous, IMAGINATIVE, magical world-building that Oda created for EVERYONE on this big, beautiful planet, yet somehow crumbles at the sight of an accurate representation of a PRETEND CHARACTER in a live action remake of A CARTOON… the problem isn’t with casting, it’s with you. That kind of behavior is ignorant, embarrassing, and you should be ashamed of yourselves.”

Luffy Lying Face

The One Piece manga celebrated its 28th anniversary this year, and it’s currently in the Final Saga as it nears its inevitable conclusion. The light-hearted story about a young pirate boy has developed significantly over the years, as we learn more about the broken world built by the tyrannical government. The series has several layers of mysteries, some of which have yet to be revealed. Even our protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is one big mystery. Although the series has always focused on his dream of becoming the Pirate King, we learn after the Wano Country Saga that there’s something more he wants to achieve, which can only be possible after getting the One Piece.

Not only that, but we barely know anything about his father, Monkey D. Dragon, who was introduced in the Loguetown Arc. So far, the story has only shown him a handful of times, and despite being the leader of the Revolutionary Army, his powers have never been revealed. However, the most mysterious person in his family is his mother, whose name or face was never revealed in the story. Luffy grew up in a small village of the Goa Kingdom located in the East Blue Sea. However, a majority of the fandom considers this new character to be a more likely option, even though there’s no evidence to back it up.

One Piece Fans Believe the Former Pirate Empress Is Luffy’s Mother

Since the manga never revealed the identity of Luffy’s mother, there have been countless theories about her, even to the point of having one theory about Crocodile being a woman and his mother. Not only that, but the former Pirate Empress, Tritoma, also gained popularity thanks to this theory. She was first introduced in SBS Volume 109, and that’s when the rumors began. She was previously mentioned during the Amazon Lily Arc as the former Pirate Empress, who died of Love Sickness about 13 years ago.

One Piece Luffy Ace Dadan

Tritoma made her manga debut in Chapter 1156, which features a flashback from around 40 years ago when the Kuja Pirates were roaming across the seas and were treated as celebrities for their beauty and strength. Because of her cheerful nature, which is unlike the rest of the Pirate Empresses, and her beautiful smile, many believe she shares a resemblance with Luffy. However, that’s the only reason fans believe the theory to be true, which isn’t currently enough evidence to back it up. Not to mention, she died 13 years ago, which means Luffy was already six at the time, but he has never once seen her face. His separation from Tritoma could be explained by backstory to fill the gaps in the timeline, but until then, there’s not enough compelling evidence to call her Luffy’s mother definitively.

Since Dragon had to leave his son because of the dangers surrounding him, Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, was responsible for raising him. Since Garp’s job as a Vice Admiral kept him busy, he would always leave Luffy and Portgas D. Ace under the care of Curly Dadan, a former mountain bandit. Luffy didn’t grow up with his parents, but Dadan showered her foster sons with lots of love, in her own way. Since the One Piece manga is in the Final Saga, we may soon learn more about his parents and the past that connected the two of them.

It’s been nearly two whole years since Netflix released the live-action adaptation of One Piece that went on to become a massive success and break Netflix’s streak of bad luck with live-action adaptations once and for all. Despite the initial skepticism surrounding the series, Netflix’s One Piece exceeded expectations in every regard, even drawing new mainstream fans to the beloved series. Ever since then, fans have eagerly been awaiting Season 2 of the live-action series, which recently returned with an exciting update in the form of a new trailer with the series’ first look at Laboon among other characters.

The newly shared trailer for Season 2 of the One Piece live-action series notably includes a glimpse of Laboon as the Straw Hats are seen making their way through Reverse Mountain and into the Grand Line. Much like in the manga, the lovable leviathan is seen waiting at the very entrance to the Grand Line with his jaws open and ready to devour the Going Merry. Despite the recent debate surrounding Chopper’s design in the live-action adaptation, the series seems to have nailed Laboon’s design, and though he appears to take on a much more terrifying appearance than in the manga, there’s no doubt the encounter between him and the Straw Hats will be just as heartwarming as the original.

Laboon Prepares for Epic Entrance in Netflix’s One Piece

Season 1 of Netflix’s live-action One Piece no doubt had significant challenges of its own to overcome, such as Arlong and the Fishmen and the seemingly impossible task of realistically portraying the series’ very fantastical devil fruit powers. That said, these hurdles are quickly beginning to look like a piece of cake in comparison to Season 2, which, as seen in the latest teases, is going to be much more ambitious than the first season. From adorable talking reindeer to massive, hulking Giants and whales, Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece has a lot more riding on CGI, and it could make or break the series.

As far as Laboon is concerned, the few seconds that he makes an appearance in the new trailer do look pretty promising. Much like Chopper, the series appears to be favoring a more realistic approach, which will surely make the Straw Hats’ entry into the Grand Line a nerve-wracking one. As far as Laboon’s importance to the story goes, while it may not come into play just yet, this peculiar whale directly paves the way for a future Straw Hat and one of the saddest backstories of the series, so be sure to remember Laboon when he finally makes his debut in One Piece’s live-action.

L’etoile de Paris en fleur is an upcoming original anime film by Arvo Animation. The film is directed by Goro Taniguchi, best known for his works in the Code Geass anime and film series, and One Piece Film: Red. Additionally, Katsuya Kondo, famous for his contributions to Studio Ghibli’s classics such as Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, and many more, is the character designer of this upcoming film. Some of her most iconic works are Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Blue Period, and D.Gray-man, among many others.

So far, only the character design of the protagonist, Fujiko, has been revealed. She will be voiced by Ami Toma, known for playing the role of Kokoro in the film Lonely Castle in the Mirror. L’etoile de Paris en fleur will hit the Japanese theaters on March 13, 2026, but there has been no information regarding the international release date. The official website of the film shared the film’s synopsis as well as comments from Taniguchi, Kondo, and Toma.

Along with the release date announcement, the official website also shared the staff comments. Character designer Katsuya Kondo shared, “Seven years ago in May, someone came to visit me at my home in Nagano. It was Kalki Rajeev, producer at Arvo Animation. Naturally, it was our first meeting. He asked me if I would create a character for a movie he was currently planning. I immediately and politely declined.”

Although Kondo initially declined, he continued, “However, he refused, saying, ‘At least do some conceptual drawings.’ I was touched by his enthusiasm and decided to accept.”

Despite his initial hesitation, the artist got engrossed in the project before he knew it. Kono continued, “But it was a long journey from there. I ended up not only contributing conceptual drawings, but also the original drawings.”

He concludes his message, “Seven years have passed since then, and our movie is scheduled to be released in March of next year. Rajeev! To all the staff! I wish you all the best.”

The film’s director also highlighted that they had been working on this independent project during the COVID-19 pandemic before thanking Kondo and the staff for their contributions. The film has yet to release an official teaser or trailer, so we will likely be introduced to more characters, especially Chizuru, once it drops.

One Piece’s anime is finally concluding the heartbreaking Bartholomew Kuma’s backstory, which highlights his tragic past and sacrifice. Despite losing his humanity, Kuma comes to his daughter’s aid and saves her life. The situation in Egghead has only worsened after the arrival of Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, since no one on the island stands a chance against his demonic form. The Five Elders are major antagonists of the series, but they rarely show themselves in front of their enemies. Since they have the entire Navy under their thumb, it’s much easier to give orders instead of getting their hands dirty. However, after Admiral Kizaru’s defeat, Saturn has no choice but to take matters into his own hands, since the situation is quite dire.

The latest One Piece Episode 1139 debuts new opening and ending themes. Out of all the series’ opening themes, the latest one, Carmine by Ellegarden, may be the most spoiler-heavy of all. This will be the final opening and ending themes of the Egghead Incident Arc since the crew will soon be heading towards Elbaf, where they will commence a new journey. While Elbaf is the Land of the Giants, and while Luffy and his crew are bound to meet a lot of them there, their most fated encounter was what One Piece fans have wanted for 24 years.

One Piece’s Best Giant Duo Returns in the Anime After the Little Garden Arc

Dorry and Brogy were introduced in the Little Garden Arc of the Alasbata Saga. The duo has been fighting on the island for a hundred years, but they have never been able to determine the victor. In fact, they were fighting for so long that they even forgot about the reason behind it. Ordinarily, anyone would call off the fight since they don’t even remember why they were angry at each other in the first place. However, Giants are prideful warriors who would rather die than back away from a duel.

Dorry and Brogy’s bravery and honor heavily inspired Luffy and Usopp in One Piece, so the Giant duo asked the crew to visit their homeland again. They parted ways after their duel was settled, and Luffy’s group headed towards Alabasta. Meanwhile, Dorry and Brogy returned to the seas, occasionally staying in Elbaf as well. After that, the duo made brief appearances a few times, but now they will finally reunite with Luffy and his crew. The Giant Pirates will arrive in Egghead and contribute significantly to the main battle for those looking forward to their return in the anime. The brand-new opening features blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments, including them fighting Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, one of the main villains of the arc. Dorry and Brogy have finally returned to the story and will be heading to Elbaf with the Straw Hats.

One Piece Day might just be the most exciting time of the year for any fan of the series, and this year was no exception, with One Piece Day ’25 bombarding fans with exciting updates and announcements. Most exciting of all, Netflix’s live-action One Piece unveiled a new trailer for Season 2, which, as announced at Netflix’s Tudum back in May, is preparing to set sail sometime in 2026. As if the first season wasn’t already a huge hit, Season 2 of the One Piece live-action is going to be a big one for the series, with many new yet crucial characters set to make their debut, including a particular Marine that fans will love.

Netflix’s One Piece Live Action recently released a new trailer for Season 2, which is filled to the brim with exciting easter eggs and cameos. The trailer gave fans their first look at characters such as Vivi, Nico Robin, and, most importantly, one of the main antagonists of the first upcoming story arc of Season 2, Captain Smoker. Callum Kerr, who has been cast as Smoker in the live-action adaptation, perfectly embodies the iconic Marine Captain in the new teaser, from his intimidating expression to the twin cigars in his mouth, promising fans a performance true to the source material.

Callum Kerr Takes the Stage as One Piece’s Live-Action Captain Smoker

While fans have been divided about some live-action characters, such as Vivi and Chopper, as far as characters like Captain Smoker and Crocodile go, everyone seems to unanimously agree that the casting could not be more perfect. In Smoker’s case, the wig and costume design leaves nothing to be desired, with even the series’ excellent prop design shining through little added details like the Marine logo on the tyre rims of his motorcycle.

For those unacquainted with Captain Smoker, the morally ambiguous Marine Captain will serve as one of the central antagonists of the Logue Town Arc, which is where the plot of Season 2 will take off. Unlike the Marines fans have met so far in the series, such as Captain Morgan and Captain Nezumi, Smoker is one of the earliest likable, and not to mention just, Marines that fans encounter in the series, other than Garp. All that remains to be seen is whether Netflix’s One Piece will also include the memorable encounter between Captain Smoker and the little girl with the ice cream cone, which is a defining moment for his character. Nonetheless, it seems like fans can rest assured that Captain Smoker will be just as cool in the live-action.

One Piece is readying to return with a huge new wave of English dub episodes, and fans have gotten to see an early look at what’s coming next with a new clip of Gear 5 Luffy in action. One Piece’s English dub has been working at a very fast rate over the last few years to catch up with the Japanese release of the anime, and that work has finally paid off as the franchise is now pretty much neck and neck with the original Japanese releases. It’s meant that fans of the dub will be able to watch along pretty much with the rest of the world.

This means that One Piece fans are all working their way through Egghead Arc Part 2 as of the latest episodes, and fans of the English dub will be getting a huge new drop of episodes this week. To prepare for the next wave of dubbed episodes, One Piece has shared a special clip of Gear 5 Luffy taking on Admiral Kizaru and teases fans about this major clash between the two for the first time since the events of the Saobody Archipelago arc. Check it out below as shared by Toei Animation.

When Does One Piece’s English Dub Return?

One Piece’s English dub release will be resuming on August 12th with Episodes 1123-1133. It’s a huge drop for the fans who have been waiting patiently for the next step of the saga, and is only less than ten episodes away from the current release airing new episodes in Japan. Fans will be able to stream these new dubbed episodes exclusively with Crunchyroll along with the rest of the anime’s back catalogue. It’s also where you can find new episodes of the original Japanese language release with English subtitles if you wanted to jump a bit ahead instead.

This next batch of episodes are a game changer as the chaos around Egghead continues with Luffy and the others trying to protect Dr. Vegapunk from the Marines and someone escape the future island laboratory. This is also where the anime kicks off the flashback arc for Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney to explain what happened to the two of them. It’s a very emotional flashback that’s basically one heartbreak after another, but also fills in some important pieces of the puzzle for One Piece‘s past overall.

What’s Next for One Piece?

Toei Animation

One Piece has a ton of new projects now in the works for the coming year and beyond. Announced during One Piece Day 2025 this past weekend, the franchise revealed that not only will fans be able to see new episodes of the anime, but there’s a new spinoff now in the works as well. The light novel One Piece: Heroines, a story that focuses on many of the series’ standout heroines, is getting its own official anime adaptation. But a release date or window has yet to be confirmed as of the time of this writing, however.

Netflix also has confirmed that the second season of their live-action One Piece series is now in the works for a release sometime next year. Now carrying the title of One Piece: Into the Grand Line, the new season will be introducing all sorts of new characters as Luffy and the others make their debut in the Grand Line. It’s also been confirmed that the live-action series will also be returning for a third season with production on it beginning soon.

After endlessly teasing fans for years on end, One Piece has finally revealed the Rocks Pirates in all their glory, including their enigmatic captain, Rocks D. Xebec himself. Unexpectedly enough, Rocks was revealed to be Blackbeard’s father, opening up a whole new trove of possibilities and theories about the two. Most importantly, however, fans were finally able to put names to many of the unnamed faces fans first caught a glimpse of back during the Egghead Arc’s God Valley flashback.

That said, along with confirming the names and identities of many of the Rocks Pirates, Chapters 1155 and 1156 of One Piece have also proven that the series actually introduced fans to multiple members of this legendary pirate crew 18 years ago, but no one knew it at the time. The crewmates in question include Pirate Smuggler Ganzui, a Cat-Fishman named Barbell, Captain John, and even Gill Bastar, the protagonist of Oda’s debut one-shot manga, Wanted! Each of these Rocks Pirates actually made their debut in One Piece as Moria’s General Zombies during the Thriller Bark Arc, specifically in Chapter 450, which was released in April 2007, well over 18 years ago.

One Piece’s Thriller Bark Arc Introduced the Rocks Pirates as Zombies

Rocks crew members as revealed in One Piece chapter 1155
Shueisha

Ever since Chapter 957 confirmed Captain John was a member of Rocks’ crew, fans were quick to theorize about whether the rest of the General Zombies could also be former members of the fearsome crew, and the God Valley flashback in Chapter 1096 further fueled these speculations. From the latest chapters, it seems clear that Ganzui was most definitely Zombie No. 889, as both in zombie form and in the flashbacks, he sports the same armor and long flowing goatee.

In the SBS of Volume 112 of One Piece, Oda directly confirms the identity of yet another Rocks Pirates, revealing that the General Zombie wielding multiple guns and the Rocks Pirate with the sunglasses and multiple arms seen at God Valley in Chapter 1096 are indeed one and the same. While he has yet to make an appearance in the current flashback, this mystery man has been confirmed to be Gill Bastar from Wanted! though he may still be properly introduced in the upcoming chapters.

Barbell also bears a striking resemblance to one of the General Zombies wearing a face guard and spikes around his neck, though there’s not much concrete proof beyond the physical resemblance. This leaves only the General Zombie with full head-to-toe armour and long claw-like blades, who also appears in Chapter 1096. It’s unclear which of the Rocks Pirates this zombie’s corpse could belong to, though Kyo, otherwise known as Silver Axe, is a strong possibility, as he is seen wearing a cape similar to the one sported by the mystery zombie. That said, it is possible that, much like Gill Bastar, this is simply a crewmate that fans have yet to meet.

One Piece’s New Reveal Completely Recontextualizes the Thriller Bark Arc

Overall, this revelation might just change the way fans see the Thriller Bark Arc forever. It’s crazy to think that the Straw Hats met and defeated these once legendary figures before the time skip, even if they were a fraction of their former selves. The Thriller Bark Arc was, for the most part, a lighthearted adventure, known for being one of the funniest arcs of One Piece. But, now it seems like the Thriller Bark Arc could be one of the most consequential stops in the Straw Hats’ journey, as the new reveal also lends further credence to the popular theory that Thriller Bark could actually be the remnants of God Valley itself.

Given that Sengoku first introduced the Rocks Pirates in Chapter 957, which was released almost six years ago, having many of the crewmates turn out to be the General Zombies from Thriller Bark is almost surely a retcon on Oda’s part. That said, the connection itself makes a lot of sense, given that Moria began building his zombie army after being defeated by Kaido, and what better way to re-challenge him than with his former crewmates. Nonetheless, if One Piece’s Thriller Bark Arc wasn’t amazing enough already, this new reveal makes it even more worth a rewatch.

One Piece is available to read on Manga Plus and Viz Media.

Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 is scheduled for release sometime next year, and anticipation is running high, especially after the Chopper reveal in the recent teaser. With its first season, One Piece proved that a live-action adaptation of an anime could work; however, the challenges for the next season have grown significantly due to the more fantastical elements being introduced as the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line. The vast seas of the One Piece world bring many more Devil Fruits, each posing high hurdles for live-action adaptation. One of the biggest challenges, quite literally, will be incorporating the giants, Dorry and Brogy, as the season is set to cover the Little Garden arc.

Fortunately, the first look at One Piece Season 2 has now been revealed. In the minute-and-a-half-long teaser, viewers get their first glimpse of the giants, including Brogy, co-captain of the Giant Warrior Pirates. The scene shows Nami (Emily Rudd) looking up at the towering figure from the boat. Brogy appears exactly as he does in the anime, helmet with two small horns, a rugged Viking-style appearance, and a thick beard. If anything, he looks even more Viking-like in the teaser, fueling hopes for an epic live-action portrayal of the giants in One Piece.

The New Teaser for One Piece Live-Action Reveals Brogy

For the live-action adaptation of One Piece, Brandon Murray was announced as the actor portraying the giant Brogy, and fans have been eagerly awaiting his on-screen reveal. The first look at the latest trailer captures his character much as fans had anticipated. At first glance, it’s clear that Netflix will be using camera angles to emphasize the stark height difference between humans and giants. This indicates that, where possible, the series will rely on this safe approach to make the giants appear larger through perspective. However, many scenes, particularly those in the Little Garden arc, remain to be seen, leaving questions about how the live-action will handle the more complex challenges of portraying giants.

The latest teaser also includes a small but promising detail at the end, suggesting that featuring giants will work well in the series. A brief glimpse shows an even larger entity, Laboon, the island whale the Straw Hats encounter shortly after entering the Grand Line. The depiction of the massive Laboon is as intimidating as one would expect from an island-sized living creature in motion. This moment suggests that, although a full reveal of the giants Dorry and Brogy is still to come, Laboon’s successful portrayal and the brief tease of Brogy indicate that the One Piece live-action is developing with a visually striking approach and will possibly even surpass the first season.

It’s that time of year again when One Piece celebrates its serialization in the grandest manner possible, bringing fans the latest news on all of the franchise’s latest and upcoming projects, and this year’s One Piece Day hasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Besides announcing an all-new anime adaptation of yet another novel, one of the most exciting reveals at One Piece Day ’25 was, without a doubt, the new teaser for Season 2 of the Netflix live-action series.

While an exact release date beyond the 2026 release window has yet to be revealed, the new trailer for Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action has effectively reignited fans’ excitement for the new installment. The new trailer gives fans first glimpses at many new faces like Nico Robin, Captain Smoker, and most importantly, Princess Vivi, who is set to be played by the Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran. Besides Robin, this casting is easily one that fans were looking forward to the most, and the new Season 2 trailer finally reveals Vivi in all her glory as Miss Wednesday.

Live-Action Vivi Finally Makes An Appearance in One Piece’s New Trailer

netflix

Much like the other new faces in the trailer, Vivi appears for only a few seconds, though these seconds already give fans a good idea of what to expect. While many were divided on the casting choice, the new teaser finally helps fans imagine Charithra Chandran as Vivi, and she seems nothing short of perfect for the part. It seems like the live action has gone with a slightly darker teal hair color and dark roots to better complement Chandran’s complexion. Though some fans may be upset by the change, it is arguably a smart decision, as giving Chandran a light blue wig identical to Vivi’s hair in the original could have looked too unnatural.

That said, the rest of her look, especially the jacket, is almost identical to that of the original. Vivi also seems to be sporting her dual slashers, with the only other notable difference being the top, which seems to resemble the striped anime version more than the weird spiral top Vivi originally had in the manga. For now, things do seem very promising as fans also get a small glimpse of Vivi in action in the new trailer, hinting at fight choreography as good as the first season. Overall, while there’s bound to be fans who are dissatisfied or unsure at the moment, there’s no doubt that Charithra Chandran will absolutely charm everyone when Season 2 of the One Piece live-action series releases.

One Piece is finally coming back to Netflix for Season 2 of the live-action series next year, and has finally revealed the first look at their take on Miss All Sunday, otherwise known as Nico Robin. One Piece’s live-action series capped off its debut season with Luffy and the Straw Hats declaring that they would be making their way into the Grand Line next, and now it’s finally time to see what this actually looks like for the next season. Now that Season 2 is coming next year, Netflix is finally showing off the new episodes after much teasing fans about it.

One Piece Season 2 will be making some big changes with the debut of the Grand Line, however, as Luffy and the others will be coming across many more new faces both friend and foe alike. One of these faces will be a high ranking member of the Baroque Works group named Miss All Sunday, and we’re finally getting to see the first look at how she makes the jump from Eiichiro Oda’s original manga and anime franchise to live-action with a new trailer. Check it out below.

Netflix’s One Piece Introduces Nico Robin at Last

Netflix

Netflix’s One Piece will be introducing Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday with the new season of the live-action series. Premiering with the streaming service next year, the new season will be tackling some major arcs as it sets up Luffy and the Straw Hats for their first major wave of challenges now that they have come to the Grand Line. Baroque Works had been teased in the first season, but it won’t be until this second season that we actually see all of its members in motion. And Miss All Sunday is one of the most mysterious members of this group.

This is just a codename, however, as the character is more fondly known as Nico Robin. She plays a massive role in the future of One Piece’s manga and anime, but for now fans of the live-action series will be continuing to wonder what her end goal actually is going to be. She’s already looking to be a fierce addition to the new season with just this first look alone, but it’s only going to be a matter of time before we get to see what she’s going to be up to next as she bounces off of characters like Joe Manganiello’s Sir Crocodile.

When Does Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 Come Out?

One Piece Season 2, now titled One Piece Into the Grand Line, is currently scheduled for a release with Netflix sometime in 2026. A third season has been announced to be in the works as well, and production on the next season is slated to begin soon. This new season will be adapting the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs from Eiichiro Oda’s original One Piece manga. Abova joins the cast of the series as Robin and Manganiello joins as Sir Crocodile, but there are a ton of other new additions.

Also joining the roster for Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 are Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Charitha Chandran as Vivi Nefertari, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Cobra Nefertari, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Clive Russell as Crocus, Werner Coetser as Dorry, Brendan Murray as Brogy, Callum Kerr as Smoker, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rob Colletti as Wapol, Ty Keogh as Dalton, Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, and Mark Harelik as Dr. Hiriluk.

The One Piece Card Game frequently collaborates with renowned mangaka to promote both its characters and the game itself. Previously, Black Clover’s Yuki Tabata created a Luffy card, Sakamoto Days’ Yuto Suzuki drew a Shanks card, The Promised Neverland’s Posuka Demizu promoted Sabo, and Food Wars’ Sun Saeki worked on Ace’s illustration. This time, to commemorate the annual One Piece Day, Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami shared these breathtaking visuals of the Five Elders, right before a major event in the anime. Akutami worked on five cards, each dedicated to one Elder. These cards highlight never-before-seen forms of these villains while also confirming their official coloring for the first time.

So far, the anime has only revealed Saint Jaygarcia Saturn’s true form, but the rest will make their appearance not long from now. While the manga readers must be aware of what these forms mean, anime-only fans will soon witness the overwhelming strength of the other four elders as well. Although Jujutsu Kaisen reached its conclusion in September 2024, the mangaka has yet to announce any new projects. Even so, he is occasionally working on special projects such as One Piece Card Game and Black Clover’s 10th anniversary while also getting his well-deserved rest. The mangaka faced several health issues during JJK’s serialization, so all the more reason his fans are waiting patiently for another project in the near future.

The Five Elders Are Major Antagonists in One Piece’s Egghead Incident Arc

The Five Elders were introduced in the Jaya Arc of One Piece, and they have always controlled things from a higher position. They never had to get their hands dirty to catch criminals since they had more than enough subordinates to do the job for them. The tragic Ohara Incident confirmed how ruthless they can be. As the official highest authority in the world, they have been controlling everything from a place where no one could reach them. The Elders also never hesitate to take down entire islands if it suits their interest. However, their power wasn’t revealed until years later when Sabo encountered them in the Pangea Castle. They transformed into strange creatures, implying they have the powers of Zoan Devil Fruits. He barely managed to escape the castle after being cornered by them and Imu.

However, the situation in Egghead was much dire, and after watching Admiral Kizaru fail, Saturn had no choice but to descend from the Holy Land of Mariejois. The anime just concluded Bartholomew Kuma’s heartbreaking backstory, and now the fighting in Egghead has resumed. Saturn’s overwhelming strength far surpasses that of Kizaru, and there’s no doubt that the other four will be on almost the same level. The anime has only shown the Elders’ forms in silhouettes, but Akutami revealed them ahead of the anime. The Egghead Incident Arc is also in its final phase and will soon be heading towards the Elbaf Arc, which is currently ongoing in the manga.

One Piece’s anime is back in action with the final phase of the Egghead Arc, and with the start of its climax has debuted a brand new pair of opening and ending themes. One Piece had been spending the last few months of its episodes working its way through a new flashback arc exploring Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney’s past. This flashback was one heartbreaking episode after another, but also showcased some very important information that ultimately helped to flesh out more of One Piece‘s world in general. But it’s time to head back to Luffy and the others in the present day.

With One Piece’s previous episode officially reuniting Bonney and Kuma after years of being split apart, it’s now time to focus back on the present day of the Egghead Arc. Luffy and the Straw Hats are now needing to escape from Dr. Vegapunk’s future island laboratory while St. Saturn activates a new Buster Call, and that chaos is in full form with the debut of its newest set of opening and ending themes that you can check out in action below as shared by Toei Animation.

One Piece Unleashes New Opening and Ending Themes

Debuting with One Piece Episode 1139, the new opening theme for the anime (serving as the 28th opening for the series overall) is titled “CARMINE” as performed by ELLEGARDEN. This new opening truly marks the climax of the Egghead Arc itself as it teases some of the big events to come as Luffy and the others try to escape the island. Much like some of the anime’s bigger openings, this one reveals some of the major players who will be showing up in the coming episodes as the chaos across the island is only getting started with this new climax.

The new ending theme sequence is a bit different, however. Titled “PUNKS” as performed by CHAMELEON LIME WOOPIEPIE, this is the 22nd ending theme for the TV anime overall. This new ending instead focuses on the many Vegapunks that we have met across the anime thus far. But there’s also a pretty big spoiler that fans of the manga will notice right away hidden in the ending. Thankfully, it’s vague enough that those just following along with the anime won’t notice it until the arc comes to an end and each of the characters are put in place.

What’s Next for One Piece?

One Piece‘s anime has returned to the present day, which means the anime will be working through the rest of the Egghead Arc for the next few months. The series will be showing off its new episodes on a weekly basis, so you’ll want to be sure you’re keeping up as they are available to stream with both Netflix and Crunchyroll (with more English dubbed episodes being available soon as well). But One Piece also has a lot more projects now in the works for a release in the near future.

During the One Piece Day 2025 celebration, it was announced that the anime would be getting a new spinoff for the One Piece: Heroines novel that focuses on stories about its leading ladies. Not only that, but Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series now carries a brand new title of One Piece: Into the Grand Line with a third season entering production soon as well. So there’s a lot to keep an eye out for.

Luffy from the first look of One Piece season 2

The highly anticipated Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece will be released next year, with the first look unveiled through a new trailer. This teaser was revealed during the One Piece Day event, an annual celebration of the series’ anniversary that brings fans the latest updates on various projects under the franchise. While the anime series also received exciting announcements during the event, all eyes were on the first glimpse of the second season of Netflix’s live-action adaptation. The first season was met with an overwhelmingly positive reception, proving that, if done right, even a live-action adaptation of an anime can be successful.

Season 1 introduced the beginning of the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey across the vast seas in pursuit of the treasure left behind by the former King of the Pirates. The debut season also featured the original Japanese voice cast from the anime for its Japanese dub. For fans concerned that Season 2 might not follow suit, a new Japanese dub trailer released alongside the original trailer confirms the return of these iconic voices. This also suggests that the new characters, both allies and adversaries, set to appear in the upcoming season will likewise be voiced by the original anime actors, preserving the unique essence of the anime in the live-action adaptation.

The New Japanese Dub Trailer for Netflix’s One Piece Confirms the Return of Its Iconic Voice Actors

Though One Piece’s engaging narrative drives the series, the anime is equally brought to life by its voice actors, especially in the Japanese dub, who have gradually become iconic. It’s almost unimaginable to see an adaptation of One Piece in any visual and audio medium without Mayumi Tanaka voicing Monkey D. Luffy. Thus, when it was confirmed that the live-action Japanese dub would retain the original voice actors, it immediately reassured fans that the series was on the right path, as the iconic performances would help preserve its essence. With the new trailer for Season 2 confirming Mayumi Tanaka reprising her role as Luffy and Akemi Okamura returning as Nami, it solidifies that the upcoming season will once again feature the legendary voice cast.

The new season, which will begin by covering Loguetown after the Straw Hats’ entry into the Grand Line, will introduce more iconic characters such as Captain Smoker, Miss All Sunday, Miss Wednesday, the Giants, and many others, and with the Japanese dub trailer released, it strongly indicates that even these legendary characters will be voiced by the original anime voice actors. The first look at these characters has also been revealed in the initial trailer. The teaser further confirms a third season of the One Piece live-action, and considering its announcement even before Season 2’s release, it suggests that fans may get to see Season 3 shortly after Season 2 arrives next year. While Netflix has yet to announce the release date for the second season, fans can take comfort in knowing that the iconic voice actors are returning for the upcoming installment.

One Piece‘s anime franchise is going to be expanding even further as a new spinoff is on the way all about the series’ main heroines. One Piece fans had a lot to celebrate this year as One Piece Day 2025 took place over the weekend in Japan, and shared some major new updates for more of the projects they now have in the works. Not only did they share a new look at the second season of the live-action series coming to Netflix next year, but fans also saw the first look at a brand new anime project coming too.

As part of the One Piece Day 2025 event over the weekend, One Piece has officially announced a new spinoff anime for its spinoff novel series, One Piece: Heroines. This spinoff tells stories for heroines like Nami, Nico Robin and more that weren’t shown in Eiichiro Oda’s original manga. This means fans will be treated to a whole new take on the One Piece world, and you can check out the first look at the new One Piece: Heroines spinoff anime below with the reveal of its first poster.

What to Know for One Piece: Heroines Anime

Toei Animation

One Piece: Heroines is a special spin-off novel written by Jun Esaka with illustrations by Sayaka Suwa that tells new side stories for many of the series’ stand out heroines such as Nami, Nico Robin, Nefertari Vivi, and Perona that weren’t seen in the original series. Haruka Kamatami will be directing the new spinoff anime series for Toei Animation with Takashi Kojima handling the character designs and Momoka Toyoda handling the scripts. It’s yet to be revealed when fans will be able to see it, however, as a release window or date has yet to be confirmed at this time.

It’s also yet to be revealed what form this new anime project will take. One Piece: Heroines does have enough material to potentially be a couple of episodes, but it could also take the shape of a OVA project like seen with other novel adaptations such as One Piece Fan Letter that fits right into the events of the TV anime series. But with other recent One Piece spinoffs making their debut across social media and Internet platforms too, it’s hard to gauge exactly where this new spinoff is likely to end up.

What Is One Piece: Heroines About?

Toei Animation

If you wanted to check out the original spinoff, Viz Media has actually licensed One Piece: Heroines for an English language release. They tease it as such, “The girls of One Piece take the helm in these exciting prose short story collections, where each chapter features a different heroine! A collection of stand-alone prose stories that focus on fierce female characters from the world of One Piece. Go behind the runway as style icon Nami stars in a life-changing fashion show, observe wise Robin as she helps to decipher an ancient tablet with Koala and Sabo, watch as solemn Princess Vivi receives a love letter from an unexpected admirer, and check out Ghost Princess Perona’s battle over the last bottle of wine with Zolo and Mihawk!”

One Piece Day 2025 also came with the big announcement that Netflix’s live-action One Piece series will be returning for Season 2 sometime in 2026. It has also been renewed for Season 3 with production on the new season to start soon as well. Coupled with new episodes of the One Piece TV anime now streaming with Netflix and Crunchyroll, it’s a good time to be a fan.

After the massively popular reception of Netflix’s One Piece live-action in 2023, the series is returning with its second season in 2026. While the release date has yet to be confirmed, the series shared its first trailer during One Piece Day, an annual event to celebrate the manga’s debut on July 22nd. The anniversary is celebrated every year with a special event that lasts for two days, although the dates often vary. Lots of exciting updates regarding the manga, anime, and any other project related to the franchise are shared during this event. This time, fans get the first glimpse at Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 trailer, about two years after the first season was released.

The second season is called One Piece: Into the Grand Line, following the Straw Hat Pirates in their journey across the treacherous sea. The trailer introduces several new characters who will encounter the pirates, as friends and as foes. Additionally, it also confirmed Season 3, which will likely be released not long after Season 2. While the first season adapted the East Blue Saga, Season 2 was initially expected to cover the entire Alabasta Saga. However, in order to avoid cutting off too much of the manga content, the second season will set up the premise of the Alabasta Arc, and Season 3 will wrap up the second Saga of the series.

What to Expect From Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

Netflix

Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 is expected to cover Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island Arcs. Right after the Drum Island Arc, the story moves on to the main event of Alabasta, which will be covered in Season 3. The filming of Season 3 has long since begun, even before the release window of Season 2 was confirmed. Most of these arcs are rather short, and if the series follows the same eight-episode format as the first season, it will be able to stay faithful to the manga without excluding many key moments and characters.

The first season ended on a cliffhanger, where a mysterious man is burning Luffy’s wanted poster. His identity is revealed in the trailer, and it’s not difficult to determine that he will serve as an obstacle in Luffy’s journey. The story will take the crew to the Grand Line, a world they have only ever heard about, and it’s full of unpredictable dangers. Whether it’s the weather or the people there, the crew has to be wary of everything.

One Piece is now in the works on Season 2 of the live-action series with Netflix, and now fans have finally gotten a look at what to expect with its first trailer. One Piece has been one of the most successful live-action anime adaptations released in the modern era, and had been a massive success with Netflix upon its debut. It’s why it was no surprise to find out that a second season was confirmed to be in the works even in the midst of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and why Netflix got started on the new episodes as quickly as they could.

One Piece is now heading to Netflix with Season 2 of the live-action series next year, and fans finally got the first real look at the new episodes with a trailer showing off the new season in full. With this new season seeing Luffy and the Straw Hats officially entering the Grand Line after all of the trouble they stirred up in the East Blue in the first season, fans are about to be introduced to all sorts of new allies, foes, islands and more in this next phase of the journey. Check out the new trailer below.

What to Know for Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

One Piece Season 2 is now in the works for a release with Netflix next year, but has yet to reveal a more concrete release window or date as of the time of this writing. One Piece franchise creator Eiichiro Oda previously confirmed that this new season will be adapting the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs from the original manga as well. This helps to narrow down exactly how much we’re going to see through this first foray into the Grand Line for the live-action series.

Joining the roster for Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 are Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Joe Manganiello as Sir Crocodile, Lera Abova as Nico Robin, Charitha Chandran as Vivi Nefertari, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Cobra Nefertari, Daniel Lasker as Mr. Hiriluk.

Netflix

What’s Happening in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

With One Piece wrapping up its filming for Season 2 of the live-action series earlier this year, it’s really only a matter of time before it all hits our screens. It’s going to be a big season for Luffy and the others as the Grand Line pits them against the biggest challenges in their journey. But at the same time, this is also going to be the make or break point for the live-action series as these future arcs are setting up a big payoff to come.

One Piece has yet to reveal any potential future plans for its live-action series future beyond its second season, and that makes a lot of sense considering that showrunner from the first season, Matt Owens, has since departed from the series in the midst of the new season’s production. But if this second season is successful, we’re likely going to get a lot more for a massive arc to come.

One Piece has returned for a new episode of its special spinoff anime as part of the massive One Piece Day 2025 weekend. One Piece is going all out for the franchise this weekend with a special celebration showing off some of the projects they now have in the works, and fans have already been treated to some special surprises as part of the new weekend too. This includes the return of a special anime spinoff that originally made its debut earlier this year for a very short time, and now even more fans are going to be able to check it out.

Koisuru One Piece is an official spinoff series that follows a group of kids who all share not only a love of Eiichiro Oda’s manga series, but also have the same names of each of the Straw Hats. This spinoff made its full anime debut earlier this year, and had a very short run. But as part of One Piece Day 2025, the spinoff has made its comeback as each of its young characters are reacting to all of the events in the weekend thus far. Check it out in action below.

What Is Koisuru One Piece?

Koisuru One Piece (which can also be translated into One Piece In Love) was first created by Daiki Ihara for Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service in 2018. It’s an officially recognized spinoff of the main services that follows a young boy and girl duo (along with their third wheel) who share names with members of the Straw Hat crew who end up bonding over their love of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece franchise. This spinoff premiered across social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok in the days leading up to One Piece: Egghead Arc’s return to screens earlier this year following its hiatus.

The staff and voice cast from the previous episodes also return for the new entry. Miki Kobayashi produced the new short Yu Kamatani and Hazuki Omoya serving as directors for Toei Animation. The spinoff also features Hanao Iida as the character designer, Midori Tanaka as art director, Emi Nakajima as color designer, and Kosuke Ohori as director of photography. The voice cast includes the main trio of Ryosuke Kanemoto as Luffy Yamamoto, Ayane Sakura as Nami Koyama, and Yuichi Nakamura as Usopp Nakatsugawa as they can be heard in this new One Piece Day 2025 celebration short.

What’s Next for One Piece Day 2025

Toei Animation

Following its start last night, One Piece Day 2025 will be continuing with a new slate of events teasing the future of the franchise. The schedule of events for August 10th (in JST) teases new showcases for the anime’s future (featuring members of the voice cast talking about behind the scenes moments), the One Piece Card Game, and even a tease for the second season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series.

The schedule for One Piece Day 2025 Day 2 on August 10th (in JST) breaks down as such:

  • 10:15 AM OPENING LIVE STAGE

One Piece Chapter 1157 will be the manga’s latest exciting installment, continuing the ongoing flashback and delving deeper into the era when the Rocks Pirates were forming and rising in power. This ties into Loki’s flashback, which began as he recounted the day his father, Harold, died, a day for which Loki is blamed. It has been five chapters since this flashback began, focusing on the events surrounding Harold’s death. Early on, the flashback shifted to unveil the legendary pirate Rocks D. Xebec and his infamous crew. While fans were thrilled to see these legendary figures united under Rocks, who has also been revealed as Blackbeard’s father, the initial chapters didn’t appear to directly relate to Harold’s eventual demise. However, following the latest installment, it’s becoming increasingly clear that it is connected after the reveal that Rocks is specifically recruiting Harold to join his crew in his quest to defeat the World Government.

What makes this more intriguing is Rocks’ intention for Harold to consume a mysterious Devil Fruit located in Elbaf, whose true power will only unfold when Harold eats it. Since this Devil Fruit was first mentioned in the same flashback depicting Harold’s death, it suggests that Rocks will play a pivotal role in that event. Meanwhile, as the author delves further into this major flashback, he is also revealing other legendary elements, such as the Roger Pirates and the Kuja Pirates, in parallel, illustrating how the Great Pirate Era was on the verge of beginning. While the lore continues to deepen in the upcoming chapter, fans will have to wait a bit longer, as the series will be on break next week, along with the entire Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will be on break next week and will return on Monday, August 18th, 2025, with Issue 38. Accordingly, One Piece Chapter 1157, which will be featured in that issue, is scheduled for release on Monday, August 18th, 2025, at midnight Japan Standard Time. Due to the time difference, fans in the Western regions will get to read the chapter on Sunday, August 17th, at 11 AM Eastern Standard Time (ET), 8 AM Pacific Time (PT), 10 AM Central Time (CT), and 4 PM Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Once released, fans can read the latest chapter on Manga Plus and Viz Media for a limited duration. These platforms also allow any visitors to read the first and the last three chapters of the manga for free. Meanwhile, fans with a subscription to Shonen Jump Manga Plus can also grab the latest One Piece chapter to read.

What To Expect From One Piece Chapter 1157?

One Piece Rocks D Xebec

Since the latest chapter, the series has delved even deeper into moments unfolding across the world, particularly focusing on the development of Rocks and subtly tying it to the story of Loki and Harold. The upcoming chapter is expected to follow this same pattern, adding further gravity to their connection and highlighting how the actions of Rocks and his legendary pirate crew will ultimately impact both Loki and Harold. With the recent chapter also featuring Roger and Monkey D. Garp, it appears that Oda is finally building toward revealing the events of the day Rocks was defeated at God Valley.

Given that Rocks died long before Harald, and considering the author’s clear intent to explore Rocks’ legacy fully, as evident from the reveals so far, this marks the perfect opportunity to depict how the alliance between Roger and Garp led to his downfall. Yet, it’s also becoming clear that Rocks’ death will significantly influence both Loki and Harold in some way. Loki, who idolizes Rocks, may see his death as a call to action, fueling his ambition to become a pirate and challenge the world in the footsteps of the man he reveres. Another compelling element revealed thus far centers around the Devil Fruit in Elbaf, whose true power is said to be unlocked only if Harold consumes it.

Perhaps this legendary Devil Fruit residing in Elbaf could be the same one Luffy possesses. Considering Elbaf’s reverence for the Sun God Nika, Rocks may have believed that the warrior destined to oppose the World Government would only reach full potential if the fruit was eaten by a giant. This further solidifies that Rocks’ involvement in Loki’s flashback is no coincidence and is intrinsically tied to Harold’s death. Based on the current revelations, his connection appears linked to the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, the legendary Devil Fruit long sought by the World Government, and the upcoming chapters of One Piece will undoubtedly continue to build on this theory.

One Piece is appreciated for its worldbuilding, lore, layers of mysteries, captivating characters, and power system, among many other qualities that justify the fact that it’s the best-selling manga of all time. What started as a light-hearted journey of a young pirate gradually turned into something much deeper and complex. The story is now in its Final Saga and is slowly tying up the loose ends before commencing the final war. As a Shonen series, One Piece never shied away from transformations during the fights, and that’s especially the case for our protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. His Devil Fruit and creativity allow him to explore the endless possibilities that come with being a “rubber boy.”

For over two decades, the story progressed with the general idea that Luffy’s Devil Fruit is just a Paramecia-Type that he accidentally ate. The Devil Fruit grants him special abilities, but that wouldn’t have been possible if he hadn’t spent ten years training and honing his skills to properly use his powers. The key to handling such a power is tricky, but Luffy had to master it before setting sail in hopes of accomplishing his dreams. He made it all the way to Wano and challenged Kaido, a Yonko who is said to be the strongest creature in the world. Two years ago, Luffy was forced into a corner during his fight with Kaido. However, just when it seemed like he had no way out, he shocked the fandom with his unexpected transformation.

It’s Been Two Years Since One Piece Debuted the Gear 5 Transformation

one-piece-episode-1071-gear-5-luffy-watch.jpg

One Piece released Episode 1071 on August 6th, 2023, which changed the story forever. It adapts Chapter 1044 of the manga, which was released on March 28th, 2022. The series revealed that Luffy’s Devil Fruit is originally called Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Nika refers to the Sun God, an ancient legendary figure who is revered as the Warrior of Liberation. What ensued was an animated battle extravaganza as Gear 5 Luffy laid into Kaido in a way no other anime has ever matched in terms of combined pure hype and cartoonish whimsy.

The fruit has a will of its own, having evaded the World Government for 800 years, and at one point it even nearly fell into their hands. However, Shanks stole the Devil Fruit from them and escaped to Foosha Village in the East Blue. The series has yet to reveal whether meeting Luffy was his plan all along or if it was simply fate that brought them together.

The Five Elders have always been aware of the fruit’s existence and described it as the world’s most ridiculous power. It’s such a troublesome ability that they had to erase its existence from the annals of history. Even so, Luffy not only awakened his Devil Fruit but also used it to overpower Kaido. Now that the anime is in the Egghead Incident Arc, we can see that he has gotten a better hold of his new ability. What makes the Gear 5 transformation truly incredible is how it resonates with Luffy’s character, who represents joy, freedom, and turning imagination into reality. It’s mystical and yet comical at the same time, which suits the tone of the story, while feeling wildly original in the process, and it’s something fans won’t soon forget.

One Piece Luffy with Buggy

Over the years, One Piece has redeemed many a villain, even converting some into members of the Straw Hats, though no other character in the series better encapsulates the series’ powers of character redemption than Buggy. Initially introduced as a pathetic, gag villain, Buggy’s character has grown quite considerably over the years, as has Buggy’s importance in the world of One Piece, and at some point during Buggy’s journey of failing upwards, his character has grown on fans to the point that many are even rooting for him to beat Luffy at finding the One Piece. Other than being completely in line with Buggy’s character and a completely unexpected plot twist, Buggy becoming the Pirate King would also be incredibly funny, and One Piece just gave him the spotlight for his birthday.

August 8th marks the birthday of everyone’s beloved clown, the one and only Buggy, and One Piece just shared an all-new illustration in his honor. In a recent post on X by @OPcom_info, One Piece shared new birthday art of Buggy as a child, along with young Shanks and Roger. Buggy can be seen holding a cake, topped with raspberries as red as his nose, and shoving Shanks away while smiling devilishly. Meanwhile, the former Pirate King, Roger, can be seen in the background smiling at his two adoptive sons like the proud father that he is.

One Piece Highlights Buggy for His Birthday in New Art

Given that dedicated birthday posts and art are reserved for Luffy and the Straw Hats and almost-Straw Hats like Carrot, it is quite special to see Buggy get the recognition and attention he deserves on his birthday.

Besides this adorable new art featuring Roger and Shuggy, One Piece’s official X handle also shared a second Buggy poster highlighting one of his best moments in the entire series, the moment Buggy declares his intentions to claim the One Piece even in the face of absolute humiliation and scorn from Mihawk and Crocodile. This one moment truly gives fans an all-new perspective on Buggy, while the flashback even evokes strong sympathy for him.

Overall, love him or hate him, there’s certainly a small part of Buggy that’s respectable, this being his ambition and conviction to never give up. Even if he continues to fumble and stumble his way into success, Buggy does indeed deserve to be the Pirate King at some point, be it before or after Luffy, and it’s nice to see One Piece give him the appreciation he deserves on his birthday.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

Despite having its rough spots over the years, One Piece’s anime has been nothing short of breathtaking over the last few arcs, with the series stepping up its game even further going into the Egghead Arc. While fans are mostly in agreement about the amazing improvement in animation, One Piece’s anime has yet to improve in one infamous area — its pacing, and its latest episode proves the anime could slowly be bringing back a very annoying trend.

With One Piece being the decades-long saga that it is, the series, despite being highly praised and popular, is already quite intimidating to get into, owing to its thousands of chapters and episodes. This issue is only made worse by the anime’s sluggish pacing that fans have complained about for nearly as long as the series has been airing. Having said that, along with the animation quality, it seemed like One Piece had at long last stepped up the pacing for the Egghead Arc. Part of this feeling also comes from the fact that Eiichiro Oda himself has picked up the pace as of late while the series heads into its Final Saga. Unfortunately, Episode 1138 hints that One Piece’s anime could be going back to its old annoying ways.

One Piece’s Anime Ruined the Finale to Its Best Flashback Yet

After the cinematic, emotional rollercoaster that was Episode 1137, fans had high hopes for the latest episode of One Piece, only to be met with an episode that was essentially a clipshow of Kuma’s flashback so far and scenes that fans have already witnessed more than at least three times across various episodes. Episode 1138 barely adapts even half of the manga chapter that it is taken from and puts a real damper on what has otherwise been one of the best, if not one of the most evocative flashbacks in all of One Piece.

Overall, despite having only a small percentage of pure filler content, episodes such as the latest one can be quite tiresome, both for fans keeping up with the anime weekly who are looking forward to seeing new content, as well as those trying to catch up on the series posthaste. Hopefully, this won’t be a recurring problem as One Piece’s Egghead Arc truly has plenty of exciting developments ahead, especially with the Buster Call being invoked on the island and Luffy mysteriously being fed and ready to bring back Gear Five in all its glory.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

Sanji mocking Zoro in the Egghead Island arc of the 'One Piece' anime

One of the most famous storytelling techniques in One Piece is highlighting parallels between certain characters to explore the core themes. These parallels are either subtle or deliberate and are often the topic of fan discussions. One of the greatest parallels shown in the series is the one between Monkey D. Luffy and Gol D. Roger to portray the themes of inherited will, freedom, and the legacy of the Pirate King. While Roger’s journey has long ended, we are still in the middle of Luffy’s adventure, and it’s clear he’s destined for even greater heights than the first Pirate King ever reached.

However, it’s not just Luffy, but even his crew members have a lot in common with the Roger Pirates than we initially thought. As the Wings of the future Pirate King, Zoro and Sanji are the crew’s backbone, not simply because of their strength, but also due to their unwavering loyalty and the ability to make rational decisions when Luffy isn’t there. Just like Luffy has his wings now, Roger, too, had Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban. While Rayleight was introduced in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc during the time-skip, Gaban had just met the Straw Hats in the latest Elbaf Arc. Although the series dropped a few hints regarding the parallels between Luffy’s and Roger’s wings, the latest Chapter 1156 cover officially confirms it.

One Piece Chapter 1156 Cover Confirms the Roger Pirate Parallels in This Era

One Piece Chapter 1156 Cover

The official X handle of One Piece shared a time-lapse video of the drawing process of this cover. Initially, Oda was going for something more wholesome with the Straw Hats hanging out with animals. However, he changed the idea to highlighting the parallels and focused on the Straw Hat’s Monster Trio and the Roger Pirates’ strongest members. He finally decided on this design and gave Nami the spotlight as always, while the other crew members beside her, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, are tiny.

One Piece Sanji Zoro

This cover cements Sanji’s role in the crew, which has always been controversial due to fan discourse. Gaban is known as Roger’s left hand, and Sanji is often considered the same for Luffy. The title of the right-hand should ideally belong to the first mate. The parallels between Zoro and Rayleigh were pretty much a given since they are both swordsmen and the first mates of their respective captains. While Oda has been dropping several hints about Zoro and Sanji being of relative strength, personal bias is very much a thing in the community.

When the Roger Pirates were sailing the sea, Gaban and Rayleigh fought for the second top ranking in the crew, after Roger. Just like them, Sanji and Zoro have been rivals ever since the two of them met, and they have yet to settle their debate. They have also grown significantly over the years, and even though Zoro has awakened Conqueror’s Haki, Sanji isn’t that far behind at all. Luffy and his wings have yet to join the fight in Elbaf, and just like always, the three will again show significant growth, getting one step closer to becoming even stronger than the Pirate King and his crew.

One Piece Sanji

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is the best-selling manga of all time. The series began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and has long become a global sensation. The series only continues to reach new heights of success now that both the anime and manga have entered the Final Saga. Over the years, the series has gained a large international fan base and caters to many more outside of the target audience. The series has countless side characters, many of whom often end up becoming fan favorites, even if they appear for a short while. But any lasting connections have typically been dismissed by Oda the moment fans suspect a potential for a romantic endgame pairing.

However, the story technically revolves around Luffy and his crew, and they continue to be the center of attention. While One Piece is an action shonen, many such series, especially the long-running ones that focus more on worldbuilding or fights, often include romantic moments among the main characters. However, the One Piece creator has set one rule that’s set in stone, and it revolves around the crew. The series features the “found family” trope prominently, and that may be why Oda is adamant about the crew members having a different but meaningful bond instead of romantic nuances. However, while explaining this, Oda made it clear that romance isn’t depicted in the series, but the truth couldn’t be further from it.

One Piece Subtly Shows Romance, but Not Among the Crew Members

In 2009, during Jump Festa, One Piece creator Oda answered a fan’s question about who Nami likes. The mangaka answered, “Hmm, in a romantic sense? I don’t think there will be any romance among the crew. Nami probably sees all the good aspects/qualities of those guys, but One Piece isn’t a romance.”

Oda continued, “Maybe a lot of girl readers ask this kind of question. Boys are not interested at all. One Piece is basically a shonen manga, a manga for boys, so romance isn’t depicted.”

When Oda gave this statement, the manga was in the middle of its Summit War Saga, and so, the statement is quite dated, given how One Piece’s characters have bonded and matured since then. The part about not having romance among the crew still holds true. Despite Sanji fawning over Nami and Robin, there aren’t clear depictions of romance at all among the crew, aside from wonderfully romantic moments like Pudding and Sanji.

However, that doesn’t mean that the entire story stays away from having romantic moments or nuances. Although it’s not completely out there, One Piece has subtly and even openly shown depictions of love among the characters since the post-time skip era. Shonen manga may not advertise itself as a romance-heavy realm, but with male and female readers aplenty and lots of fanshipping, it’s hard to deny that romance has a place in One Piece.

One Piece’s Romance Isn’t the Main Focus, But It’s Still There

One Piece Chiffon Bege

The first couple that comes to mind is Capone Bege and Chiffon Charlotte. They are quite underrated and were married because of Big Mom. However, it’s also true that together with their son and crew members, they make the most wholesome family in the series. Bege was introduced as one of the Worst Generation pirates, but turned out to be a loving husband and father, who would do anything to protect his family.

Additionally, the Baby 5’s backstory and her fear of abandonment were almost too heartbreaking. She was fooled a lot because of her naivety, but during the chaos of the battle, she found Don Sai, the 13th leader of the Happo Navy. It’s a clear enemies-to-lovers trope, and they are even married now. Oda also has a habit of breaking fans’ hearts with tragic backstories, including the story about Kyros and Scarlett, as well as Bartholomew Kuma and Ginny. Both men lost the love of their lives and ended up raising their daughters all alone.

Ginny Kuma

Both Kyros and Kuma went through different trials, but they still share a lot in common. Not only that, but Viola and Pudding ended up falling for Sanji, even though the former’s feelings weren’t quite explicitly stated. The series also relies a lot on one-sided feelings, whether it’s the Pirate Empress Boa Hancock or the Tontatta Princess Mansherry; many characters express their feelings quite openly, even though it’s unrequited.

There are even more romantic nuances subtly shown throughout the series, and they aren’t always the focus of the story. Not to mention, it’s never used the way some shonen or Shojo manga do, where a romantic subplot softens the mood between action scenes. Instead, the romance often serves as tone management, something to be included in between the fight, whether it’s in the form of comedic banter or to make a backstory even more tear-jerking.

One Piece‘s creator has shared a special tribute for Black Clover, and has surprised fans with their take on Asta. Black Clover has officially kicked off the celebration for its 10th anniversary of its original debut with Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and it’s going all out with all sorts of special new projects to help commemorate this massive milestone. As the series prepares to continue with the next major chapters of its final arc, other Shonen Jump legends have started to share their takes on the franchise to help celebrate how far Yuki Tabata’s manga has come over the years.

Black Clover is kicking off a new wave of special collaboration images that enlists some of Shonen Jump’s biggest creators and artists for their take on Yuki Tabata’s manga series, and that includes One Piece series creator Eiichiro Oda. Ahead of the reveal for the 17 Shonen Jump artists special illustrations for Black Clover, fans got to see Oda’s take on Asta for his special tribute (which follows Tabata’s own take on Luffy seen before). You can check it out below as shared by Shueisha.

What’s Next for Black Clover’s 10th Anniversary?

Shonen Jump has enlisted 17 artists to take part in the Black Clover 10th anniversary celebration, and this included famous names like One Piece‘s Eiichiro Oda and Naruto‘s Masashi Kishimoto amongst them. The celebration then continues with the release of three new chapters of the manga coming in the next issue of Shueisha’s Jump GIGA magazine later this month. This three chapter release is the biggest launch of this new era thus far as Yuki Tabata inches closer and closer to the true end of the series overall. So fans are going to want to see what’s coming next.

The celebration continues with Black Clover’s anime making its comeback in the future as well. Black Clover will be returning for Season 2 of the anime, and it will feature animation produced by Studio Pierrot once more. The anime has yet to reveal a potential release date or window as of the time of this writing, but it has been confirmed that you will be able to stream the episodes outside of Japan with Crunchyroll when they hit (which is also where you can catch up with the entire run of the anime’s first season too).

How to Watch One Piece

As for One Piece, franchise creator Eiichiro Oda knows all about milestone anniversaries. Both the manga and anime celebrated its 20th anniversaries not long ago, and there are no signs of slowing down any time soon. One Piece is now in the midst of its Final Saga, but it’s also unclear as to how long the series will still be continuing for. As of the latest chapters, the series is now in the middle of its second major arc (and a new flashback arc in the middle of it to boot) as it continues to set the stage for whatever grand plan Oda has in mind for the long running mega hit.

If you wanted to catch up with the anime, One Piece: Egghead Arc is now streaming its new episodes with Crunchyroll and Netflix. There are also English dubbed episodes available (and more coming on the way), so it’s the perfect time to start catching up as the franchise gets ready for its grand finale.

One Piece is currently exploring a flashback that was initially introduced to shed light on the day the last King of the Giants, Harold, died. However, shortly after the flashback began, it shifted focus from the events in Elbaf to a broader depiction of global developments. The narrative took a significant turn with the reveal of one of One Piece’s most enigmatic villains, Rocks D. Xebec. Since his introduction, the flashback has delved into the era of his rise, a time when his actions began to upend the world, particularly through his direct challenge to Imu, the supreme figure of the World Government.

As the chapters progress, more details surrounding him and the legendary Rocks Pirates continue to unfold. The latest chapter further develops Rocks’ character but begins by highlighting the Kuja Pirates and Roger Pirates, showcasing their growth alongside the Rocks Pirates and also bringing Monkey D. Garp into the spotlight. While fans didn’t expect such wide-ranging developments from this flashback, it’s clear that creator Eiichiro Oda is fully committed to chronicling Rocks’ notorious actions, and possibly his eventual downfall, culminating in the legendary day when Garp and Roger joined forces to defeat him.

One Piece Might Fully Depict the Events of the God Valley Incident

Roger, Rocks, and Garp in a custom image together

Eiichiro Oda has masterfully framed many pivotal moments in One Piece as historical events, elevating them to legendary status due to their lasting impact on the world. Among these, the God Valley Incident stands as one of the most significant. This moment marks a major development, as it involves a pirate crew composed of legendary figures, each said to have achieved remarkable feats. With recent chapters gradually revealing the true scale of this crew’s power, fans have long wondered how such a formidable group was ultimately defeated by the alliance of Gol D. Roger and Garp. Given Oda’s current focus on developing the story of Rocks D. Xebec, whose arc appears to be closely tied to Harold and, by extension, Loki, it seems increasingly likely that his downfall at God Valley will also be connected to those characters.

With Garp and Roger now appearing in the flashback alongside the Rocks Pirates, the stage is set for the long-anticipated full depiction of the God Valley Incident. Whereas, if Oda does fully commit to unveiling every detail surrounding this event, it could also include the immediate aftermath, particularly the discovery of Shanks by Roger’s crew inside a treasure chest on God Valley. This long-standing mystery, including why Shanks was even in the chest to begin with, might finally be addressed. Ultimately, as One Piece is in its final phase, it’s becoming clear that all of the series’ legendary historical moments will be brought to light, making the full reveal of the God Valley Incident a major and likely possibility.

One Piece’s ongoing arc brings the Straw Hats to the fabled land of the Giants, the place where legendary and mighty warriors reside. The Giants welcomed the crew with open arms and even held a banquet to celebrate their arrival. Unfortunately, things went downhill pretty quickly when the Holy Knights invaded the island with the sole purpose of subjugating it by force. However, the series kicks off Harald’s backstory right before Luffy is about to join the fight. Although the primary purpose of the flashback is to shed more light on Harald’s past and the truth behind his murder, we also learn more about the other important characters.

The series also officially introduces Rocks D. Xebec, whose face was shrouded in mystery for years until this point. He resembles Blackbeard, and the manga introduces him as the villain’s father. We follow his journey as he marks his name in history by killing an Admiral and then gathering a crew of terrifyingly powerful fighters. As mentioned in the story previously, almost all of the members of the Rocks Pirates made a name for themselves in the New World after the crew was disbanded. Xebec was officially declared dead during the God Valley Incident. However, before that happened, he had an almost impossible goal in mind.

One Piece Chapter 1156 Reveals Xebec’s Goal

One Piece Rocks D Xebec

One Piece Chapter 1155 revealed that Harald and Xebec clashed swords several decades ago during the Reverie. After the incident, Xebec never stopped trying to get Harald to join his side. He wasn’t simply just amazed by the Giant’s power, but he was looking at a bigger picture. Xebec needed the power of two Devil Fruits, one of which could be found in Elbaf. However, its true power will only be revealed when Harald eats it. It could be something to do with the Giant King’s lineage, as he had the blood of the ancient Giants, or there’s always a chance Xebec wanted to fully use his potential.

Additionally, the Rocks Pirates also needed to locate the frozen Giants that were previously shown in the Punk Hazard Arc. However, regardless of Xebec’s goals, he had no intention of forcing Harald to do his bidding since he berated Kaido for even suggesting the idea. Xebec’s true goal was to bring down the Holy Land of Mariejois, and the key to his plan’s success lies in Elbaf. The story has yet to reveal the other Devil Fruit required by Xebec, but we may learn the truth in the upcoming chapters.

One Piece has officially wrapped up its flashback arc looking back on Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney’s past, and now the anime has dropped the first look at what’s coming next in the rest of the Egghead Arc. One Piece: Egghead Arc resumed for Part 2 of the arc following a six month hiatus, and a few episodes into the arc’s comeback it kicked off a new flashback that has been the focus for the past few months. Now that the flashback arc has come to its end, it’s finally time to return to the present day events on Dr. Vegapunk’s future island laboratory.

With the newest episode of One Piece reuniting Kuma and Bonney after years of being split apart (as fans had seen through the flashback arc’s episodes), the anime is now gearing up for the true action of the Egghead Arc. Debuting a special new teaser trailer highlighting the fights to come, One Piece has also given fans the first taste of its new opening theme coming to the series later this Summer as well. Check it all out in action below.

What to Know for One Piece: Egghead Arc

The new opening theme for the next phase of One Piece: Egghead Arc is titled “CARMINE” as performed by ELLEGARDEN. While the episode it will be debuting with has yet to be revealed as of this time, it will be kicking in with the anime sometime this month. This makes a lot of sense given that the anime is now heading towards a chaotic phase of the new arc. Now that the flashback has ended, it’s time to return to its focus on Luffy and the Straw Hats as they are trying to somehow escape from everything happening across the island laboratory itself. Which has since gotten much more difficult.

The latest episode of One Piece revealed that while Kuma had been able to deal damage to St. Saturn as seen with the previous episode, Saturn was able to quickly regenerate and heal from the damage. It’s now as if nothing happened at all, so the Straw Hats will now be focused on trying to escape rather than trying to fight one of the Five Elders head on. Escape is going to be tougher, however, as a new Buster Call has been activated to wipe out Egghead in its entirety too.

Toei Animation

What’s Next for One Piece?

With the debut of a new opening and likely a new ending for the One Piece anime, it really does mark a period of big changes coming on the horizon. Saturn had activated the Buster Call because of everything gathering on the island. Dr. Vegapunk had been researching the real history of the world, Luffy’s Gear Fifth form has brought back Nika’s powers, Kuma has reunited with his daughter, and these are all major problems for the Marines. So now Luffy needs to somehow survive yet another massive island escape through another Buster Call.

It also means that now is the best time to catch up with everything that’s happened in the anime thus far. If you wanted to catch the newest episodes of One Piece: Egghead Arc (which has new English dub episodes on the way), you can now find the series streaming with Crunchyroll and Netflix.

One Piece Rayleigh Shakky

The ongoing arc of One Piece is currently featuring Harald’s backstory to reveal the truth behind his mysterious death 14 years ago. While Loki was framed for his father’s murder and was sentenced to crucifixion in the Underworld, the Giants of Elbaf unknowingly let the true perpetrator move freely. However, before revealing the truth about the tragic incident that took place in the Aurust Castle that fateful day, the story first covers Harald’s journey and what made him the most beloved king in Elbaf. Additionally, the backstory also focuses on Loki’s childhood as well as the past behind the Rocks Pirates, a crew led by the legendary pirate Rocks D. Xebec.

The pirate crew also has a connection with the Kuja Pirates since their then-leader, Gloriossa, ended up following Xebec at some point. She was also present at the God Valley Incident. The manga currently features the story from before the historical event, and also features the first meeting between Shakky and Rayleigh. The two were introduced in the Sabaody Archipalego Arc and are still together. Although the series never explicitly revealed it, there are subtle hints about the two being married, and even having an open marriage, since Shakky seemed unbothered by Rayleigh’s relationships with other women. However, while the couple’s relationship has changed over the years, their first meeting was almost too charming.

One Piece Chapter 1156 Features the Chaotic First Meeting Between Shakky and Rayleigh

During those days, the Kuja Pirates from Amazon Lily were treated as celebrities, even among the Marines, because of their beauty and strength. We see a glimpse at how the pirate crew functioned under Gloriossa’s leadership, the one who is known as Elder Nyon these days. She was also a member of the Rocks Pirates and was admired by her crew and enemies alike. However, the only person who outshone her in every way was Shakuyaku, now referred to by her nickname Shakky, who was Gloriossa’s first mate at the time.

While Gloriossa was head over heels for Gol D. Roger, the man only had eyes for Shakuyaku. He even challenged the Kuja Pirates in order to take her away, but got beaten up by Shakuyaku instead. She even declared she would never submit to another’s captivity before ordering her crew to take away Roger Pirates’ treasure. While the entire crew was captivated by the woman, Silvers Rayleigh was the only one who seemed unmoved.

Seeing him fed up with his crew’s antics, she expressed concern about the man’s hardships. He finally blushed when she winked at him, and that was that. The entire situation was extremely chaotic since even Garp joined in on the fun and fought Roger. The narration also revealed that soon after this incident, Shakuyaku was crowned the Pirate Empress and became even more popular in the world.

One Piece is now in the works on Season 2 of the live-action series with Netflix, and fans have gotten the first look at the new episodes ahead of a much bigger announcement. Netflix has been in the works on One Piece‘s live-action series for the past few years, and the first season ended up being one of the most successful live-action adaptation debuts with the streaming service yet. But it’s all just getting started as Season 2 is about to be much bigger, and much more intense. It’s made the wait for the new episodes all the more tougher too.

One Piece Season 2 is currently scheduled to make its debut with Netflix some time next year, and filming for the new season was teased to be wrapped up earlier this year. But as the series gets closer to its 2026 premiere, Netflix has dropped the first look at the Straw Hats as they get ready for their Season 2 return. But that’s not all, however, as Netflix is teasing that an even bigger reveal for One Piece‘s live-action series is coming our way soon enough too. Check out the new look at Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 below.

Netflix

What’s Next for Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

As teased by Netflix, it seems One Piece Season 2 will be showcasing something more during One Piece Day later this month. One Piece Day will be taking place on August 9th and 10th in Japan, and will be featuring celebratory announcements for the anime, card game, manga, the live-action series and more. It’s yet to be revealed what exactly is going to be announced for the live-action series, but these special presentations will be streaming worldwide with One Piece’s official English language YouTube account. So fans should mark their calendars to be ready for what could be coming our way next.

As for what has been revealed about One Piece Season 2 thus far, it will be adapting the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs from Eiichiro Oda’s original manga. The live-action series is going to be introducing all sorts of new locations as Luffy and the Straw Hats officially enter the Grand Line, and that means a ton of new names will be joining the cast for the coming season as well.

Netflix

Who’s New in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2

Joining the roster for Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 are Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Joe Manganiello as Sir Crocodile, Lera Abova as Nico Robin, Charitha Chandran as Vivi Nefertari, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Cobra Nefertari, Daniel Lasker as Mr. Hiriluk.

Chopper’s inclusion in the new season has drawn the most caution, however, as he will be a fully CG animated character bouncing off of the rest of the cast. The first look at Chopper in motion was revealed earlier this year, and Eiichiro Oda himself shared his approval over the jump to live-action, “The key to Season 2 is, of course, our weird talking animal,” Oda shared in a message to fans at the time. “After extensive trial and refinement by the entire team, the day has come to finally unveil him!! From his form and furs to his expressions and face, and even lighting and gravity simulation – a world – class team brought their skills together in bringing Tony Tony Chopper to life, and now he’s ready to be introduced to the world!! Check him out!!”

One Piece has consistently implied that its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is following in the footsteps of Gol D. Roger, the former King of the Pirates, aiming to become the second person to claim that title. Numerous events have aligned to portray Luffy as Roger’s successor. Key figures like Silvers Rayleigh, Roger’s first mate, and Shanks, among others who were closely associated with Roger, often see glimpses of him in Luffy. Following the time skip, Luffy even began to demonstrate abilities similar to Roger’s, with one of the most notable being the “Voice of All Things.”

With these moments reinforcing the connection, many fans became certain that Luffy was a true reflection of Roger. However, the latest installment in the manga, Chapter 1156, introduces a key detail that marks a major distinction between the two. This trait has long defined Luffy’s personality, and fans had assumed Roger shared it as well. Yet in Chapter 1156, Roger is shown behaving differently, raising doubts about Luffy being his true successor. Considering this change of trait, it suggests that Luffy is not retracing Roger’s path but forging his own. In fact, One Piece has already presented several subtle differences between the two characters, indicating that Luffy was never meant to be Roger’s successor in the first place.

One Piece Chapter 1156 Reveals a Key Distinction Between Luffy and Roger

One Piece Chapter 1156, titled “Idols,” continues the flashback arc, depicting a time before the Great Pirate Era. The chapter features several prominent pirate crews, including the Kuja Pirates. Known for their beauty, the Kuja had also long captivated both pirates and Navy officers alike before the Great Pirate Era as well. The most notable among them was Shakuyaku, also known as Shakky. The chapter shows the Roger Pirates launching an attack on the Kuja Pirates under Roger’s orders to bring Shakky aboard. Initially, this scene draws a parallel between Roger and Luffy, specifically in how Roger, like Luffy with Boa Hancock, seemingly doesn’t return the romantic interest of the Kuja captain, Glorosia. However, this expectation is quickly subverted when Roger is shown falling for Shakky’s beauty, a stark contrast to Luffy’s consistent indifference toward romance.

This moment subtly underlines a key distinction between Roger and Luffy; they are similar yet fundamentally different. Other differences are seen in their combat styles. Roger, who lacks a Devil Fruit, relies entirely on his swordsmanship and Haki, whereas Luffy’s fighting style is deeply rooted in his Devil Fruit abilities in combination with Haki. Ever since Luffy was revealed to be a parallel to Joy Boy, an identity tied to the entity known as Nika, with whom Roger shares no clear connection, it’s become more apparent that Luffy was never meant to mirror Roger, aside from sharing a similar goal.

When considering who might truly be Roger’s successor, one character begins to stand out more than Luffy: the fan favorite, Shanks. A strong piece of evidence comes from Oda himself in a Q&A, where he responded to a fan’s question about how Shanks learned the Divine Departure technique, the same devastating move Roger once used. Oda explained that only Shanks was able to imitate it, while no other crew members could. This suggests that Shanks was uniquely gifted and destined for greatness. Given his direct mentorship under Roger, Shanks fits the mold of Roger’s true successor in One Piece far more closely than Luffy, who is carving his own path entirely.

As One Piece heads into the Final Saga, its latest story arcs have proved the series is finally ready to divulge some of its biggest, best-kept secrets. Both the Egghead Arc and the Elbaf Arc blew fans away with major lore bombs about enigmas like Joyboy and Imu as well the world of One Piece itself. That said, besides these big, important revelations, One Piece’s latest arc may just answer another inconsequential yet nagging mystery that has evaded fans for decades, this being the identity of Luffy’s mother.

With the exciting Rocks Pirates reveal almost entirely stealing the spotlight in Chapter 1156, it’s easy to brush over the introduction to the gorgeous Kuja Pirates. However, hidden among these panels dominated by Gloriosa and Shakuyaku’s beauty is a new character who just made her first canon appearance outside of the SBS, even getting a formal introduction of her own. This character is none other than Tritoma, the Kuja Empress before Boa Hancock, who was first revealed in the SBS of Volume 109. Tritoma finally appears in Chapter 1156, where she is seen handing Gloriosa a pile of fan mail, and if the fan theories are right, Tritoma could very well be Luffy’s mother.

One Piece‘s Elbaf Arc May Have Snuck in Luffy’s Potential Mother

In the SBS section of Volume 109 of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda was asked about the previous empresses of Amazon Lily. This is when Tritoma was mentioned for the very first time, along with an illustration of her as a young woman and the revelation that she had died of the mysterious love-sickness that famously plagues the Kuja. Admittedly, there have been countless theories about who could be Luffy’s mother, almost to the point of becoming a running joke among fans of the series.

However, when Tritoma was revealed, it seemed for the very first time like she could be a legitimate candidate. The biggest reason for this was the physical resemblance, with Tritoma’s round eyes and face and thin eyebrows being quite reminiscent of Luffy. the latest chapter further drives the similarities home. The younger version of Tritoma seen in Chapter 1156 looks even more like Luffy, with even her smile being a lot like Luffy’s, albeit not as wide and toothy. While her hair and eye color will remain a mystery until the anime adapts the latest chapter, Tritoma remains a very strong candidate, as she also checks many other boxes besides her appearance.

Tritoma Would Tick All the Boxes as Luffy’s Mother

One Piece Monkey D. Dragon father of Luffy alongside possibly Tritoma as his mother

First and foremost, Tritoma would have belonged to the same generation as Dragon, making her the perfect age to be Luffy’s potential mother. Chapter 1156 takes place approximately 48 years ago, at which time Dragon would have been around seven years old, and while Tritoma appears to be in her mid-teens if not older, the age gap between her and Dragon would be roughly the same as the one between Luffy and Boa Hancock, making the ship very much plausible.

As for her death from the love sickness, much like Gloriosa and Shakky were drawn to strong personalities like Roger and Rayleigh, it is possible that Tritoma was similarly smitten with Dragon. While this is only speculation at best, considering how Dragon kept his distance from Luffy to protect him and to prevent Luffy from being used against him, perhaps Dragon was similarly forced to leave Tritoma when he decided to form the Revolutionary Army, thus causing her to succumb to the love sickness. Lastly, having Luffy’s mother hail from Amazon Lily would perhaps finally explain why Kuma sent Luffy there, of all places, during the timeskip, especially since Kuma already knew he was Dragon’s son at the time.

All that said, it is unclear whether Oda will ever give fans confirmation on who Luffy’s mother really is, given that her identity doesn’t seem to hold much plot significance at the moment. However, this could still change when Dragon finally steps into the limelight in the Final Saga. The fact that Tritoma made it out of the SBS and into the main series at all is more than enough proof that she could be a far more important figure in One Piece than fans think.

The highly anticipated Elbaf Arc of One Piece is currently featuring Harald’s backstory after taking a side step from the fight against the Holy Knights. The story will soon uncover the truth behind Harald’s tragic death 14 years ago, but first, we must learn about his past as well as what made him so loved among his people. Apart from Harald, the backstory also sheds more light on Loki’s tragic childhood after being labeled as “Cursed” by his own mother. She sealed Loki’s fate by pinning the blame for Elbaf’s misfortunes after abandoning him. Additionally, the series also finally revealed the identity of Rocks D. Xebec and his connection with Blackbeard, one of the series’ most crucial villains.

Barely anyone remembers the Rocks Pirates, but a few decades ago, they were the most powerful and notorious pirate crew in the world. Led by Rocks D. Xebec, almost all the members turned out to be important figures in the New World, including Kaido, Big Mom, and Whitebeard, who later led their own crews and became Yonkos. However, the pirate crew had a lot more members than the series initially introduced. Although they didn’t necessarily get along, together, they were the most formidable force, even feared by high-ranking Marines. The latest Chapter 1156 continues the crew’s endeavors and introduces more members.

One Piece Chapter 1156 Debuts Two New Members of the Rocks Pirates

Rocks Pirates One Piece

One Piece Chapter 957 first mentioned the Rocks Pirates when Sengoku decided to share a little bit about the legendary crew and their ending. The retired Fleet Admiral mentioned that several members of the Rocks Pirates made a name for themselves in the world. Xebec gathered almost all of the members by playing a traditional pirate game known as the Davy Back Fight. Initially, the members just banded together, but they eventually became a full-fledged pirate crew with an official flag.

While talking about those members, he also mentioned the name of The Silver Axe, who is finally introduced. Before making a name for himself, he was known as Kyo the Wicked and was considered Shiki’s rival. This implies that Kyo must be on almost the same level as one of the most notorious pirates in history. Additionally, the latest chapter also introduces Barbell, a Catfish Fish-Man, although a lot is still unknown about him.

One Piece also reveals how Gloriossa, Kaido, John, and Big Mom used to look during that time. Not only that, but we also see Streusen, Big Mom’s executive chef, who has been with Big Mom since her childhood. Streusen was a chef of the Rocks Pirates, but it was most likely because he wanted to accompany Big Mom. As the story continues to shed more light on Xebec and his pirate crew, we are getting closer to the God Valley flashback and what truly happened before they disbanded.

One Piece has found its way into the real world in quite a few different ways in the past few years. Aside from the live-action Netflix series preparing to return for a second season, the shonen franchise has seen countless examples of fans sharing their love for the creation of Eiichiro Oda. In a shocking twist, One Piece has entered Indonesian politics as the anime franchise has seemingly gotten into hot water in Indonesia. As Indonesia’s Independence Day prepares to be celebrated later this month on August 17th, the Straw Hat Pirates’ Jolly Roger has become the target of ire from government representatives.

In recent days, Luffy’s flag has seemingly been raised by many Indonesian citizens weeks before the big celebration for the country. Indonesian Deputy House Speaker and Gerindra Party executive Sufmi Dasco Ahmad disparaged the raising of the “Jolly Roger” next to the country’s flag via an official statement, “This is not a coincidence. There is a coordinated attempt to divide the nation. Let’s stand united. We must collectively resist such actions. Not everyone wants Indonesia to advance. As we grow, there will always be those who oppose it. Let’s unite and push back.”

On the flip side of the argument, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle lawmaker Deddy Yveri Sitorus shared their thoughts, “This should be seen as a public expression of criticism, which is part of a democratic society. This kind of symbolic action is better than street protests that could turn violent.”

One Piece And Politics

It’s hard not to see some of the parallels to our world that Eiichiro Oda has created over the years with his critically acclaimed shonen series. Luffy and his crew of pirates have fought against the World Government, the military, the navy, and a band of higher-ups known as the Celestial Dragons. In fact, one of the recent anime storylines that has taken the world by storm has been the backstory of Kuma, a character who lost his land and his family to the upper-class members of the Celestial Dragons. Undergoing years of trauma and brainwashing, Kuma recently broke out of the world government’s influence and delivered a blow to one of the Five Elders, Saturn, on Dr. Vegapunk’s island.

With the anime looking to ramp up the fight between the Straw Hat Pirates and the World Government, it appears as though Eiichiro Oda isn’t holding anything back in his world’s final saga. While the mangaka hasn’t hinted at when we can expect the final chapter to be released, the pieces are being moved to give Luffy and his crew quite the send-off. Luckily, it might still be years until the end is nigh for the Straw Hats, and the legacy left by One Piece isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
